Great job on this! The early/late riposte mechanics are an essential journeyman skill that many overlook. I'm not quite sure I understand the overall note at 2:23 about missing a riposte window initiating a counter , where you say: "I just happened to be holding block when I swung". Won't you always be holding block when trying to riposte? What you said in the video about it initiating a counter attempt seems technically correct to me.
Assuming you let go of the block button after blocking an attack and you also miss the riposte window then you will just do a normal attack. I just wanted to clarify a failure to attack in the riposte window will not ALWAYS be a counter attempt. Also, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

This is not the same as a counter. And there are many reasons to Riposte. This is an incredibly complex topic and I suggest booking a session if you would like further assistance
When to choose riposte rather than counter? I'm at the point where I'm just trying to counter everything, just using lots of feints to get delayed hits. Is riposte faster and better for acceling before they can combo? Basically wondering when I should counter and when to riposte. Thanks.
This is a very nuanced question that's very dependent on your play style specifically. If I were to put it simply, you want to riposte pretty much as often as possible as long as you aren't running out of stamina from doing so. Whenever planning an enemy with a weapon that deals low stamina damage, it should be more opportunities for riposting.
I thought it was all about counters but it's all about the ripostes. Should counters mostly just be for stamina recovery and fighting in groups? This would explain why high level players hit me when it felt like they shouldn't have

I think if I'm right it's around 0.5 seconds of invulnerability straight after your block when you riposte.
It has since been adjusted to where the speed of your weapon determines the length of the active parry window.

Just riposte or counter them. Their next attack will not be able to hit you.
