So You Want To Play Teutons

- Welcome back to another video from the series. Today we take a close look at teutons, a civ that has received several changes recently. Currently I think they are a solid pick in some situations, but still have certain weaknesses that lowers how consistently they can perform. This is a great civ for beginners now in my opinion, so feel free to use it if you enjoy playing it at beginner-intermediate levels. Hope you guys enjoy the video, vote down below in the comments for the next civ!

Alright guys, thanks for all the comments. It will be slavs next week!
Cool
Cumans Please. That 2 TC/Feudal Ram goodness is lacking proper CZcams attention. Show the new civs some love, Bro!
@Hera, would you also include a lil bit of your computer specs? I wanna buy a new PC and would be good to know what to look for AOE2-wise. Thanks!
But i want to play Vikings
I'd love to see a vietnamese video
I have a confession to make: I have a serious attraction to Teutonic Knights. The way their smooth capes flow over the perfectly chiseled bodies makes me an instant horndog. I can't imagine going a day without giving into my carnal urges watching them stroll onto the battlefield. I have spent the last few months writing fanfiction and poetry to express the deep, sexual energy these boys in blue express with every step.

Copypasta right on point
How dare you play them in blue!?! They need their golden cloaks!
I have a wet dream about those hot muscled Teutonic Knights every knight. So good
@@Runenschuppe Grey is the way to go with teutons.
Teuton farms are 40% cheaper, meaning they cost 60 x 0.6 = 36 wood instead of 60. You save 24 wood per farm.
At the end of this game, you had 41 farmers, so during this game you saved up at leat 41 x 24 = 984 wood. And that's not counting the re-seeds. Let's suppose during this game, you had around 20 reseeds. (41+20) x 24 = 61 x 24 = ~1500 wood. Not bad :D
Thank-you Spirit of the Law!
One of the best things about Teutons is they invalidate so many of the opponents options. You cant Trush them bc they will win every towerfight. You cant really use Monks. Crenellations invalidates Bombardcannons.
So the opponents has a very narrow set of options what makes it very predictable.
I think Teutons have a big potential for optimization on the midgame bc you can help yourself but float a ton of wood. So finding the right balance there or using the wood productivly is key to making Teutons a lot better.
It is an AOK civ but people have shied away from it for so long that there is probably still potential for improvement.
The last patch changes also made the civ more viable overall, maybe more people will start optimizing BOs to get the most of them, i think they have a specific role they are the best at which makes them at least niche instead of weak.
The farm bonus always was nice, but it wasn't enough alone. I think the +armor bonus is enough to boost their potential. When combined with the eco bonus, it gives them enough of an edge in mirror situations, or close to it. And if opponent doesn't want to mirror and go xbow or something instead, that is also good, because knights + siege can do well.
TK's will always be niche, but tankier knights + eco means they will always be at least mid tier overall.
The stat values between pikemen and knights are very precisely tuned in the castle age.
a)knight attacking pikeman
If the knight has an upgrade lead against the pikeman (attack vs. defense) the pikeman dies in (55/(10+1)*5=5)5 hits. On equal upgrades, it dies in (55/10
Taking an extra hit seems good to me
but if the halberdier meet a teuton knight how bad does is life go ?
except pikes attack slow as hell
LOL Think about how much time when into gathering the information for this post just so you could put a quick +1 like on it ~_^
@@daydodogtrue and ik this comment is 3yrs old but its perfect for me to say we have Roman’s now to boost their attack speed by 33% if you were to play them or a friend sends some centurions over to boost you’re army
I remember back in the Age of Kings days, and only until the Conquerer's expansion came out, Teutons were actually classified as a defensive civ.

Just seeing Hera in the past couple days. I have to say guys, I'm 30 and been playing since the OG game, you guys know.your stuff. It's really impressive. Never done much multilayer and would hate to come across most of you. The game play has changed a little bit over 20 years.
Great showcase/demonstration. Your analytic commentary is a great addition as wel. Ggwp
Celts plz ! I love them, but think they are hard to play.
Go eat TC!
Just watch Hoang
It is great to see you play them so well, they are my favorite civ but have a hard time playing them
I think that Malay are a great suggestion anyway, how flex they are in water AND land maps and their unique playstyle seems an edge. This will be a nice idea since we have only land games and land tips in this series right now... Great video as well💓
What I really like about Hera: He always has this super engaged attitude / voice and still makes fun of himself in the same way ("I pretend I knew this, to keep the credebility") :-D
i'd love to see bulgarians!
@Steward Benson where wtf?
Yessss we need Bulgarians
Congrats Hera on surpassing Nili and becoming the 6th largest aoe 2 youtuber!
I love these civ tutorials thanks!
Yeah, i want to play Slavs!
Japanese plz. Also gg wp. Teutons are finally viable but beating Mayans with them is a result of skill alone.
not exactly, if you use the units wells you can win always
@@Logan00710 (that's what skill is)
I think Teutons have always been better than the other beginner civs, like Byzantines and Spanish, simply because they have an eco bonus. Building farms for 2/3 the cost is better than the Spanish's faster building and the Byzantines' cheap trash. Teutons are also not weak at any stage of the game unlike the other 2, though they are restricted to a knight rush in Castle because of their lackluster archers.
Well i think that the teuton win rate proofes that your argument was false. They havent been below the eleventh Spot since over a year.
@@markusdegenhardt8678 this comment was made 2 years ago …
Been playing Teutons for 20 years - No one can weather a siege and defend the team like they can. Can't tell you how many times I've been hanging by a thread, pulled through, and came back from the grave.
Hera, you are the expert here and I respect your opinion but let me add this. It is easy to discount a civ on paper but some civs are EXREMELY powerful on a team rather than solo 1v1. Teutons are def one such civ. If your team can provide fast cheap units to intercept incoming siege and solid archer cover for your slower armies, the Teutons are unstoppable with their epic siege lines and heavy firepower late-game raids. As a Teutonic player, your biggest problem will be countering archers and fast-moving units. Best to defend your siege lines with heavy scorpions, halberdiers, and hand cannoneers.
Yupp all about stacking them castles up and building them knights up
Only correction is Herbal medicine is at a monastery instead of the university.
It's a great bonus because since garrisoned infantry fire arrows from towers and castles (with Crenellations) they can safely heal while offering firepower.
Byzantines would be interesting to watch :)
Slavs!
Hey man. Loved this. Would love to see any of: Khmer, Vietnamese, Malay, Vikings or Italians
I wonder how Hera feels about Crenelations? That range bonus isn't small; feels like it patches their usual weakness to archers on small maps where a castle is hard to avoid, and fits the 'slow death' push style of Teutons.
I just got into playing AoE 2 DE with some friends who are well, the word I use is better but seeing my civ being played is very helpful for me thanks. my strat was to get as many castles on the field with 20 archers a castle owned means 20 crossbowmen later on
You don’t need to put archers in the castle if you have crenellations you can use infantry instead.
Thank you for that hera! I hope you will hope sometimes back in to AoE2 to take a day of from LoL. Keep up the great work my man!
Love how the only civ bonus that was actually used in this game was the cheaper farms (and the resist conversion, but its hard to tell how much of a difference this made). Really shows that this is what teutons are about.
Yeah, he saved between 900 and 1500 wood during this game, thanks to the bonus :o
True, the farm bonus actually saved Hera around 800 wood. At this stage of the game it doesn't matter what type of resources you're saving as they're all viable and worth roughly the same amount of villagers' work time. So 800 value = 6 bonus knights extended between ~20th and 30th minute.
@@Michal235 41 farms x 24 wood = 984 wood saved at least, not counting the reseeds
If we suppose he did 15 to 20 reseeds during this game, that would bring the total wood saved between ~1300 and ~1500
Well if your opponent goes xbows, can't do much to see their other bonuses. I'd have loved to see a game up against knights, even if it were a team game. The farm bonus + armor knights against enemy knights would have better showcased their strengths I think.
Great job as always! What a nice game to showcase the maybe less obvious strengths as well! Successful conversions might have tilted the game when it was still a little in his favour. Mangonel predictions did their small part as well though )
Yeah successful conversions vs teutons tho.
How to play Teutons: "...have faith in my quick walling..."
Okie, if that is all one has to be able to XD
This is great! You should make a "how to play [civ]" series like this video!
Edit: Well shoot. I guess it already is a series! sweet
Luca played really well, greedy a bit for the relic but gg wp for both, thx for the content, Luv from MTL
very educational - thanks for this.
**a historically related Question: how would the Teutons fare against the Cumans? (~> 1220s)
This is a great series!
when it comes to 31:00 I thought Hera would get lots of trouble but, knights rush from back and onager hit predicted point killing massive crossbowman, wow
I’m stoked to see Bulgarian‘s
Teutons are a land deathball civ. Pushing forward with up to 13 range castles which cover your strong slow melee units and can be garrisoned with infantry to increase damage as well as siege onager.
Basically how I see it is you want to grab a forward position either with a tower rush or a castle drop (or both) then pressure your enemy while your late game eco bonus kicks in. Then you slow push your enemy down or try to spike them down with paladin. Properly microed onager line is utterly deadly while your strong melee units can cover them. If the enemy civ lacks a strong counter small groups of Teutonic Knights or paladins or even champions offer a serious threat to production buildings and TC’s.
With this civ you want to destroy town centers, production, castles and tech rather than wasting time raising the eco. Your siege abs castles can deny eco your strong siege + infantry can melt through their buildings. Your death ball of infantry + SO can’t be stopped except maybe by Briton’s super long range archers. I wouldn’t pick this civ vs britons although if you face britons a castle crawl is your best bet with fast crenellations and ranged upgrades + paladin.
Overall I think it’s a strong civ that’s sort of outside the typical meta relying on mobility and cheap trash counters. They are gold and stone hungry so you need to preserve your powerful tech units and castles if the game stalls a bit because it’s likely your opponent has better trash options. Walls at home is absolutely crucial as they don’t have good mobility which is why you want to tie your opponents military population at home and make it difficult for them to spare space or resources to raid. The more closed the map the stronger they are.
I feel like the correct mill placement was one square down-left and two squares down-right. Slightly further to the TC but if the berries were taken from the top it would be just as safe in reality, plus then Hera could have then fit exactly three rows of farms in between the TC and the mill.
#MarginalGains.
Without showcasing Crenellations or heavy Siege Presence and by using exclusively archers this was literally a waste of a tutorial video. The fact that we are talking about building placement or desperately asking for civs that will force a different playstyle leads me to this conclusion.
Great video, as always. Next week, can you show us how to play Goths so they are viable?
Awesome Hera, as a new player I'm learning alot from this!
Great series! Have you done Britons yet?
Have you done Frank's yet? Just found the channel and eager to explore new civs as I'm just coming back to the game
the hard counter to xbow is scorpion which compliments teutons nicely because the tk moves slowly as well. Teutons don't need archer units when they can just use scorpions instead.
I LOVE this series. Please keep doing it and please do Ethiopians eventually!
Lithuanians, Tartar or Bulgar for me, The new civs with frequent patch changes, would be good to hear your take!
Vikings. Always been my favorite civ to play.
Love this series! Can you do Lithuanians?
Does this series still continuing? I'd love to watch Goth bcz I like this civ even they are underpowered and kind of weak
Had an oddball idea; I really liked your archer rush, because it seems to work really well with the farm bonus in feudal age. BUT your enemy has to know you're not going to stick with archers for very long, so going xbows is probably a bad idea. And knowing that, they'll probably begin to transition to something else, probably something that will counter your cavalry.
BUT, what if you instead CONTINUED the archer rush, but with Cavalry Archers? They'd give you an immediate, no-upgrade +2 damage bonus, AND they'd be able to get across the map much faster, taking advantage of any moment of vulnerability. You'd build maybe anywhere from 5-10(10x is equal to the 300 resources for the xbow upgrade), and do a bunch more damage that'd be utterly unexpected(because seriously, who builds teuton cavalry archers?), AND you'd be able to start working into your cavalry switch by grabbing Bloodlines!
TOOOOTONS
Awesome series ! Lithuanian please so we can play 6 hours games properly
Britons
Came here from your video in which you've put civs into tier groups and Teutons were in the F tier. But at the start of this video you tell that recent changes made them a strong civ. So, I'm a bit lost here because I'm just a beginner in this game and I don't know what they were missing before the changes or what did they get to become powerful. Can somebody pls make a summary?
Solid. Vikings, Bulgarians, Vietnamese, or Aztecs :)
Aztecs or vikings next will be DOPE!
Sweet fight at the end
Slavs would be cool since their changes!
The breakdown was great and I know the games will be variable with this coming from a live show, but kind of disappointing for a game showing off the civ to have no imp age play, and most of the Teuton specific strats not really being used (other than knight/siege, but only the early stages)
It was a well played game, but maybe not the best for showing off the civ
Thanks for answering a persistent question of mine about how free techs work. I knew you had to reach the right age, but not the fact that you don't need university for the free Murder Holes and Herbal Medicine, which certainly makes a difference when planning when to build what.
Just want to wish you a gg on a fine victory
Great stuff, I wanna see Indians next!
I know its a bit of a boring one but I would love to see Huns. I always mess up my build orders because of the no houses and struggle to know when to transition into Cav archers
I know this is an old video but here is my question. Wouldn't it be better to use scorpions than mangonels against the archers? It seemed almost Impossible to land a mangonel shot on them.
I know this is an old question, but look at the shots he did get in, near the end of the video. That's when his opponent resigned. If mangonels hit just once or twice, the effect is absolutely devastating. And it takes incredible skill to dodge the shots.
@@vincentvandergoes444 lol it is old indeed so thanks for answering. Yeah I guess if you can keep your opponent multitasking then he'll fail at some point.
Aztecs ftw
yes, Im in love with eagles
Slavs
17:05 look at the girl villager in the berries
I would love to see Huns next
Wow, that went down quick. Now I know that I shouldn't count on dodging mangonel shots with range units. One wrong move, and gg
I Want to play Vikings! Berserkers are so awesome!!
isn't it risky to go 1 range ? what if the opponent goes for 2 ranges ?
next up: Magyars!!! not enough top level plays of that civ, lots of flexibility as well, would like to hear what you think.
Tatars!
fuck yea. all these peeps underestimating the teutons
thx m8
One of my favorite things to do is fill a castle with 20 Teutonic Knights. Melts most things and then I have the knights to ungarrison on any rams
but the trebuchets is a problem if you dont have paladin´s or a faster unit to counter them. Your castles will take down quickly if you dont destroy trebuchets
Hello hera its dodgers Kappa i vote for berbers or slavs ;)
My friend describe the Teuton pretty well: "An army of slow-moving melee ball of death"
I'd like to see you show off Aztecs. :)
Tier List request: Best unique techs =)
That felt like a mirco game lol
why does a civ with tower/garrison bonuses lacks bracer?
Because they have bonuses to garrisons, effectively.
Bad field archers, great static defenses, especially since you can stack your Castle with Champions and mow down attackers at range and sally forth against rams as needed.
Lithuanians. How do Leitis look like now.
Gimme the Litho civs!!
how does 4 vils on wood tell you he s going for infantry? isnt 6 on sheep, 4 on wood the normal start for almost all builds?
Question. At the end of the game, Can someone explain the flags/banner length meaning. Is it just based on total population?
Where exactly? I don't really see where banner length would be relevant.
You mean the statistics at 35:16? Yes that is the player population percentage. Light colour meaning villigers and dark military.
@@BeneTheOrca At 34.51. The banner that contains player name & colour in.
AHH this, I think it only depends on player name length. In fact I checked it in a team game and saymyname and Rubenstocks flags were the longest, while ACCM and themax had much shorter
@@BeneTheOrca Awesome Thank you.
so, where are the teutonic knights?
any elephant civ next!
would be cool to see a water civ like italians
So You Want to Play Slavs
Vikings next please!
Cumans!
you should do Slavs next
I love putting Teutonic Knights in armored siege rams 😂
Slav please!
Lithuathians and relic bonus damage!
It would be cool to see a water civ, I am just starting playing ranked thanks to your vids, but I haven't played any water map, so, watching a water civ would be cool! Maybe Portuguese or Japanese?
Spirit of the Law would recommend Japanese for fish boom as well as cheaper mine/lumber which is huge wood savings to buy more ships with. They also have nice infantry once you do want to attack an island or if the map is land/water.
Ouch, he was out of position like 20 squares with his army and it was instant gg.
17:10 T90 mills!
Can you do Lithuanians plz
slavs please!!
Get the knights in the limo rams, monks healing paladins make up for speed.
Aztecs!!
