  • I love history and especially Roman and Early Medieval History. I never thought I would encounter a museum that would nearly break me because of how awesome it was! The LVR Roman Musuem is an EXPERIENCE with such a huge amount of Roman history to discover in one place! I am looking forward to sharing it with you now!

      I do hope so! Finances are the main reasons I'd not make it, but next year is next year! I really enjoyed it. Also the Anonnae will be on here soon enough:)

      You are welcome! You've got an amazing museum and a lot of the exhibits from it are going to be highlighted on this channel over the coming weeks! It was very inspiring and I hope to eventually build something similar in the UK.

    Amazing, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I always knew that the Xanten archeological park was special and high on my list to visit places, but after hearing your detailed description, Xanten has gone up considerably in my "must see places of roman history" :)

    I just visited two weeks ago and I was super impressed with Xanten. I didn't expect so many artifacts in that museum. I was surprised that such a large area was available for reconstruction and excavation. I didn't even see the reconstructed ships (other than those in the museum itself). There was too much to see in a day. I have to go back.

    Gosh! Your enthusiasm here is infectiously charming. It sounds fantastic and it would be good if something along those lines but smaller could be put at Hadrian's Wall somewhere. One day. I'm sure you'll do really well with your uni studies as you know loads already.

    Another site which alone, is a reason to visit Europe. I fell in love with Ancient through Renissance history years ago, passion for the histories has me needing to see the sites for myself before I die. Amazing location!

    Glad you liked it. Actually, the best stuff they find in and around Xanten goes to the Romano-Germanic Museum in Cologne. Also, right next to Xanten is Birten, the site of Vetera Castra where the Legions were stationed and you can still visit the original amphitheatre and it was the starting point of Varus march into doom. Also, props for pronouncing Xanten the right way. Cheers!

    Great find and one I'll add to my list of sites to visit. Your comments about digging before when beginning reconstruction reminds me of Fortress Louisbourg on the Atlantic coast in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, it takes years of visiting to realise the finished construction from the archeological finds. It's been decades since I was there, but there's more to discover now. 👍

      Sites like that are amazing to visit as you are descovering more history and then learning how to present it to the public! I hope ot build something like this in the future!

    I visited Xanten about twenty years ago
    because we got a cheap flight to Weeze Airport
    and I was blown away.
    I think it survived so well as the river has moved several times
    The Roman city, then the medieval city
    and finally the modern port area
    come from times when the river flowed next to the site.

      @AlexIlesUK  Před rokem +1

      There was a road that went through the site and the museum wasn't as big or complex.
      Have you been to the Hedeby Museum next to the Viking city of Haithabu which was abandoned in 1066.
      It is near Schleswig in Northern Germany.

    As many issues as I have with how the British museum obtained its collection, my experience there was amazing and similar - spent two days there from open til close, still didn't see everything and took over 1000 photos 😭 also one of the staff members there was from Iran and said she was happy that the artefacts from her country were there because she thought they were safer there, so how you see it is all relative, I guess 🤷‍♀️

    • @AlexIlesUK
      @AlexIlesUK  Před rokem

      Aye all artifacts are difficult because of history. Some countries exist still and others are gone, I think presentation is important and explaining the heritage of them so all can learn from them! Glad you enjoyed it though!

    Great watch as always! I need to get there myself.
    Any plans for the new research paper which was released on the Anglo Saxons and their migration to England?
    Also any plans to visit the Lindisfarne Gospels in Newcastle? It’s on my bucket list for the next week or two.

      Firstly - I've visited the lindisfarne Gospels last week - it was great and I photographed it all! I will put that into the Lindisfarne series when I film that :) As For the migration paper, its a bit weird, I am still trying to get my head around it and I am not sure if I will do a video on it yet! Glad you are enjoying the videos though!
