That was amazing to watch. If all horses were started under such gentle, kind tutelage, it would surely change their lives. Good for you.

Awesome video was looking for this for so long will definitely be following you guys I’ve always bought dressage horses that were already broke etc. and this is a huge help it’s so different than what most people do to break horses and there is a way to break dressage horses compared to other horses because they are taught so differently I have learned Western I have done trail riding and Trey Songz is amazing and I love your videos can’t wait to show them to my 14-year-old who wants to break her own horse one day

Hi again! Your preparations surely paid off Joseph. Good first ride and your teaching commentary of what and why was super. Always helps for the horse to have a solid positive first experience in preparation for the next ride. All was calm and relaxed and Jess did great for her first time assisting you. The step by step process made a really good vid too so all your hard work on the ground made it all worth it Joseph. Til next time...

All three of you are looking great. Just remember starting my pony some 15 years ago. I also started with some groundwork, bending and going for walks in the arena and out in the woods. I climbed on everything on our route and leaned over his back in various situations . It was fun and helped me to recognize even small signs of fear and showing confidence cause this is what they know from living in a herd.

  • @HellfrozeoverDitto-lj1rm

Awesome job! I feel it’s better to start riding the horse at three, you’ll have a solid and healthy animal. Bueatiful job, that horse will have a good life providing he’s sold to the right person. It would be a shame to see all you work gets ruined by someone who shouldn’t be on a horse. I didn’t drive my colt until he was three yrs of age, best dam colt I ever had.

If the once young and reckless and now old and crippled cowboys of yesteryear who broke horses by force could see what they could have done in half the time without breaking a sweat or a body part, they would have to wonder what they were thinking........or actually, not thinking. Blinded by tradition and pride, they addressed with muscle what they could have done with mercy. Time constraints? I guess that was their redemption. Love your videos!

Firstly you have a really nice and confident young horse here and you are doing great job ...but some little advice please, be careful when you get off the horse try to leave the left stirrup before your right leg touches the ground , this could be so dangerous if horse is spooky that moment and you hang with left leg in stirrup you will go to hospital and i want you to post many next videos on your channel ....smile ....and Jess isnt wearing hand gloves longing you , this is also dangerous and can be very painful for her if spooky horse jumps away or she loses longe and horse is jumping with you then .....smile

Some people might think "why bother?" when you do all those small things when starting a horse, or even handling a finished horse. I think of it as spending time early to save time later. Anyone who has had to deal with a frightened or fractious horse who lacked decent ground work training knows the value of it. I believe that important aspects of trust are established with a horse through careful initial training and reinforced through consistent handling. You may not be able to introduce them to every possible scenario, but if they trust you, that goes a long way to allowing them to deal with new experiences without having a complete meltdown.

I think you’ve invented “natural dressage training,”Joseph! Hmm...
Anyway, such an understanding and tender treatment of a sensitive baby starting school. You are always concerned with the horse’s perception, and consequently I see the horse very differently now than I used to. (Do you know you’re training your viewers along with your horses?) Thanks for doing some painless brain surgery while I enjoy your videos. By the way, great job helping start the pony, Jess. Blue was wonderful. He trusts you both. 💜

imma start putting my horse under saddle, she does know my cues so i wouldn't say she's gonna be that bad when learning english riding, she's 12 and wasn't touched. what we did with our horses is leaning over them for a few days then be idiots around them since i like to do stupid thing near them and it helps them get used to stuff like that before i even get on for the first time. i'm anorexic and i normally never get hurt because i can stand between the horse and the wall easily.

You should use a step-up/chair to get on, especially with such a young horse, getting on and off is not very good for his back. No other comments :) Great vid.

  • @Wisepati

Start slow. Don't try for a frame at first. The horse needs to build muscles. I have seen do many ridden too hard too young and ruined. My trainer doesn't trot at first, just walk .
