  • How much do you spend on your music streaming service? And on top of that, how much a month do your other streaming services for films and video cost? Probably quite a lot, right?
After a recent charity shop (thrift store) visit, I might be about to abandon all streaming for Vinyl, CDs, & DVDs.

Just had this same discussion with my wife. Qobuz,Netflix,Disney,Amazon prime and Apple Music work out about £60 a month. I’ve enough vinyl and CDs to last my life. More books to read then I’ll ever get through so we’re going to drop Disney Netflix and Qobuz. Apple I need to keep for daughters and background music. My wife runs a charity shop so access to CDs and DVDs is easy.

Yeah I did just that. Cancelled my music streaming. Realized I never really paid attention when I streamed as it was always in my headphones as background noise. I tend to "listen" to the music if it's a psychical media and I place myself in front of the stereo. If there's an album I'm not sure I wanna risk a blind buy on I check it out beforehand on YT.
Keep it up, cheers from Sweden.

On occasion I love to stream my music.
Classical music in the morning while having breakfast....ah, the serenity.
Jazz in the evening while cooking and dining....so smooth.
For the rest of the day I have my choice of music streamed through my stereo system....so awesome.
Music when I want it, where I want it and what genre I want, a vast library of music....so hassle free.
I also have a large collection of vinyl, CD's, SACD's, together with Blu-ray 5.1 mixes.
So, I'm fully covered with any music source.
I never thought I would be into music streaming, but with all the advances in streaming technology and high end streamers, well, I'm hooked.
Still enjoy those special occasions when I sit down and thoroughly enjoy a good listening session with my other sources.

I can see ("hear?") where you are coming from. I have a very nice high-end DAC/Streamer (Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition). The only music "streaming" service I have is Apple Music, which can come in handy to explore some new music from time to time, such as checking out Orden Ogen's brand new album before getting a physical copy. Nice the Eversolo will directly connect to and play Apple Music natively in lossless format, so it actually sounds pretty darn good. Beyond that, between internet radio, and the vast library I have stored on my own music server that I either bought/downloaded from Bandcamp, or ripped from CDs, as well as my collection of vinyl records and CDs (and a really nice vintage Technics turntable and a high-end Pioneer Elite CD player for playback), I am definitely covered for music. Whenever possible, I find I still much prefer to get physical copies of music whether it be on vinyl or CD, but can live with a good lossless digital download from Bandcamp if physical is not possible or too expensive (example, I wanted to get Albion's new album on vinyl, but at 30 pounds ($38) plus another $26 shipping! No thanks, I'll just take the lossless FLAC download for now and stream it through the Eversolo from my music server.

  • @thegreatbollywoodparty868

I liked the idea of Best of both worlds, until the streaming services removed the series / movies i loved to revisit time again. I have fortunately also not abandoned my physical media. The point of appreciating the movie or music got lost with streaming. With the extra effort of physically getting up to put in a Blu ray or to play a vinyl with having something in your hand to read more about, just made me appreciate the experience even more. Great content!!

I canceled cable about 18 years ago and had an antenna professionally installed, the cost of the antenna and the labor was equal to about 3 months' worth of cable bills, since those first 3 months are long gone it's been all free since. At the same time, I had the antenna put up I had an FM antenna put up, so I can get a lot of FM radio broadcasts, which granted doesn't sound as good as vinyl or CD, but I have those too. I never had a music subscription, nor do I plan on getting one for either the house or the car. I don't even subscribe to Word 360, or any other computer software like antivirus.

I stopped in a Goodwill store yesterday and found pristine copies of Van Morrison Moondance, Led Zepplin 2 & Alan Parsons Turn of a Friendly Card open but still in shrink wrap with VSS inner sleeves for $2.75 (total) including sales tax. No one can just make them dissappear & I can put them on my TT at any time. Also picked up 3 CD's for 53 cents each. Physical media is the way to go imho.

@@soundmatters Most of the music I like to listen to, just does not show up thrift/charity shops. Power/progressive heavy metal is to niche to see any of it actually show up. However, I was cruising through a Goodwill store a couple weeks ago (while I was taking time off from work over our American 4th of July holiday), and I did score a really nice three-LP set of Stravinsky's Ballets (Firebird Suite, The Rites of Spring, and Petrushka) on the Columbia Record label. Was in excellent condition and sounded incredible on my setup. So yeah, every once in awhile, it is possible to find some nice gems in the usual junk at the thrift/charity shops. A good deal of my music these days is gotten off of Bandcamp, as many of the bands I am interested is on there, as well as directly from the bands whenever I can go to a show.

Also to add to my previous comment. I just saw an article this morning in the local paper about how Netflix is raising costs and signing on "exclusive" sports contracts. Not only it seems they raise the prices, but you also get ads/commercials along with those increased prices. When it comes to sports, I find it annoying that if I want to watch some games, it now seems I could only watch those games if I had a subscription to the service. For example, the NFL Thursday Night Football games, now requires a subscription to Amazon Prime to watch. Just saw that Netflix signed to show the Christmas NFL games, so if I want to watch football on Christmas, seems I would need a Netflix subscription. Getting to the point that the only reason I would bother to keep a TV around here anymore is to watch my DVD/Blu-rays and to play video games.

I use tidal for my daily walks and often find new music to then buy physically. I use Spotify that has a bigger library in the record shop when looking at new music. Headphones in flicking through records! Personally I would keep them for these purposes alone. I only use physical media at home and in my photography studio.

Terrific video. If I didn’t have kids who utilize my Netflix and my Spotify I think I would actually be right there with you. I rarely stream films anymore. I’d rather rent the one or two I actually am interested in off Prime rather than watch only what Netflix has available. And I do use Spotify quite a bit but truth be told if I didn’t have Spotify I could most likely just audition new music off of CZcams just as easily. And the music I really love I get on vinyl. Thanks again for sharing. Always nice to hear other’s opinions on the matter. Have a terrific evening.

I have to say I agree with you. I wonder how many stories of thrift store finds are a little bit exaggerated really. Most people are quite savvy. I don’t want to spend like 8 hours a day inhabiting thrift stores on the off-chance something decent or rare might land one day.
Also I still do collect records as well as CD and BluRay. Anything remotely interesting I find in thrift is almost always trashed.

Completely agree. I ditched Netflix (poor value), Apple Music (increasingly expensive), Disney+ (little variety). My ‘new’ car has a CD player so I might well follow your example of charity shop buys - anything that puts money in charity shop tills is a worthy plus for me.

      @soundmatters  Před 20 dny

Yea, it’s becoming harder to justify the streaming platforms. Sometimes the content doesn’t change for months. The music platforms keep going up in price, and yea, if your car still has a CD player, you’re in to a winner, at least for now. Thanks for your contribution 🎶🎧

What is awesome is the car I currently have does have a CD player. However, it is not "just" a CD player. The beauty is that it will actually "rip" CDs into an internal "Jukebox" feature, so I have a nice collection of music already stored in my car on its internal storage. Turned out it can also play DVDs, so it was possible to listen to DVD audio as well. I have no idea how large that storage actually is in terms of gigabytes, but so far, I got a couple thousand tracks stored across 150 or so albums.

People often say that vinyl today is too expensive, and it can be. But often it isn’t. For example I bought a cassette album of The Cure’s Disintegration for £6.49 in 1989 (the price sticker tells me so). In today’s money that’s over £20. So I feel vinyl should be about £20-£30 depending on the packaging and number of discs. And CDs should be £10-£15. Cassettes should be under £10.

  • @thefourthcolor

Definitely following a similar path. One preoblem with thrift store cds is the selection available but the hunt is still fun. And even a new cd costs basically the same as they did in the 80s and 90s, and is a great way to help support an artist like you said in the other vid.

I think it makes a lot of sense to be very selective about streaming subscriptions (and dropping/re-subscribing to services depending on their offerings at any given time). I imagine I'll continue to keep *some* streaming services at any given time, simply because I value previewing music and films to determine if I enjoy them enough to add them to my physical media collection.

I feel there’s a place for both in my life. You are right though. When you put on a vinyl you sit and listen to the whole album where as with streaming you tend to flick through. The subscription model though is a bit much though. Especially with apps sticking features behind a pay wall. I really fancy Roon as I like the idea of it telling you about the music and artist etc. my issue is it’s as expensive as a music sub, I’m also an Apple Music subscriber and it annoys me how restrictive they are with integrating with other platforms. I’ve had to go all retro and have a cable from my phone to a dac to get lossless hi res out of apple.

I think, for most people, a mix is ideal. But I am tempted to drop streaming (we shall see - at the least I think we will consolidate the services and be more choosy). @SkiBumMSP Před 13 dny

@@jk330ci Exactly! In my case, 3 channels (could not seem to get ABC since we lived so far out in the boonies at the time). Music streaming? That was whatever we could pick up off WZOK "The Rock!", the only decent radio station would could get at the time. Did not help that my father would also pretty much monopolize the ONE TV we had, so pretty much stuck watching whatever HE wanted to watch. So, plenty of time upstairs reading a book or playing board games with my brother. Also spent quite a bit of time outdoors whenever the weather was nice. Would be a treat when the parents are out at some dinner party, so me and my brother get to at least bust out the Atari and get to play some video games. I also remember how exciting it was when we finally got a VCR and that first trip to the "video store" to get to pick out a movie to watch. The other big excitement when we got a personal computer for the house that my dad would mostly use for work, but he would allow me to play on it. Spent HOURS learning to write programs and creating my own games on that thing (funny how I am now a senior software engineer these days).

For most people their relationship with music is very casual, and paying for a streaming service is cheap way of obtaining “ad free radio”. While I enjoy albums, most people don’t care and just want the latest fad. It really makes no sense for most people to invest in physical media and the hardware it requires since they really don’t care about music like we do. Horses for courses.

  • @simonarcher1510
    @simonarcher1510 Před 20 dny

I also like to own music on vinyl and CD, and never stream music. But the risk of physical media is the availability of the hardware to play your collection. For example, it’s challenging to find good equality portable CD players. Of course things ebb and flow, and now is a great time for vinyl and both CDs and cassettes are enjoying a resurgence.

    • @SkiBumMSP

Instead of trying to find a decent portable CD player, I end up just ripping my CDs into a lossless format and then copy the files into my Astell & Kern AK 120 MKII digital audio player. What are you talking about? I guess if you are after the ritual then maybe you are best going down to the thrift store and picking up records or cds that no one else wants…. You say you want my thoughts so these are they. If you subscribe to a streaming service such as Tidal then you get a much larger selection than your local thrift store. Right? Please tell me if I’m wrong. I don’t mind. Then you can enjoy 10 or so albums of your choice for the next few weeks. Then the month after 10 different ones. I really don’t see your logic here. If you don’t value choice then yes, I see your point, but if you do value choice of a wide selection of artists and albums then a streaming service would be a better choice. I guess it comes down to how much you value music and the listening experience to that of paying less than 1 month subscription over a 1 month period in thrift store records.

I gave up my Netflix and Amazon Prime. I stopped subscribing to jam band based streaming service, Nugs. I only subscribe to Tidal now. Enough. I find I listen to more music now and watch less video drivel just because it is on. I'm 65 and have seen enough "super hero comic book movies" to last a lifetime and watched enough other derivative Hollywood junk that I know the lines before they speak them. There's little or no creativity in Hollywood these days. Boring. I'd rather listen to some new music by Jon Hopkins, Waxahatchee, or some jazz.
The issue is there's only so many hours in a day. if you aren't getting at least 2 hours use per day out of a streaming service you should kill it. Physical media? Why, sure!
