- I've been searching for one of these bikes for a few years now and I've finally found one. Today - I'm giving it a bit of a refresh and service to have it riding smoothly once again.

Love your video's Monkey! So therapeutic . I also love my 93' Montana Team XTR I bought new and still own. Great bikes!
Bought new?! Wow. Glad to hear it’s still riding!
@@MonkeyShred Hi Monkey it's mint and original and so is my wife's Team. She uses Conti Crosskings and I use Conti Racekings both superb tyres. Love your builds mate.
My first bike as a purple KHS Pro Comp model. Believe it was a 1994 and had similar specs as the one you rebuilt. Only differrence was it came with a Rockshox Mag 21. Still have the frame and fork but it got left out over a winter and a fair bit of rust.
Get it in the warmth and de-rust it 🙂
Very cool bike and so much better with the rigid fork. Also love the old XT group set, had this on some on my bikes, too. Perfect function and perfect understatement.
How to get rid of scuff marks and scratches on black parts, such as the head set: After deep cleaning and degreasing, just touch it up with a black permanent marker.
Thanks. Yeah I love that generation of XT. It’s a solid group throughout.
Still have mine - since new! Sweet bike....
Since new?! Crazy!
Nice cat
Thanks!
Love it mate 👌 never owned a khs maybe oneday 😅
Definitely worth looking out for!
Nice refurb of this epic MTB!
Question: How did you paint the rust damage on top of the BB? Is this just the rust converter or did you paint it afterwards with matching paint? Or did the rust converter dry up in this colour?
The rust converter turns black and can then be painted over. I painted over it with some gloss back to seal it
@@MonkeyShred Thanks for clearing this up. I didn't see you paint it afterward in the vid. that why i asked :) i was like, huh, some editing magic or special rust converter?🤭
I'm currently working on a bike project that has some major rust spots, but I want to try to keep the original "light sky blue" color. Finding matching paint or a paint correction pen wasn't a success unfortunately - even manufacturer wasn't keen on helping.
Got maybe any tips on how to fix the rust damage without creating black/dark spots in the paint - since most rust converters I know of turn black?
Otherwise I guess i'll have to come up with some two-tone paint scheme 😅😅
Appeasing. Thanks.
My pleasure.
Very nice Mark.👍 😀. I've taken a lot of inspiration from your channel. Since I'm based in Florida at the moment my options for '90's mtb's are a little more limited, mostly Trek and Specialized with the odd GT or Kona thrown in. Finding the XT components is getting harder and harder. Most frames have been left outside so the amount of rust (I am by the seaside) is unreal.
Thanks John. Florida eh. I would have thought the US would have been full of older mountain bikes. Guess it’s the wrong side of the country though!
@@MonkeyShred yes it's flat and boring here - not a mountain or hill in sight. You need to be on the western side of the states or Appalachia. I did take my restomoded Trek mtb to Bentonville in Arkansas twice to ride the trails in the Ozarks which was a lot of fun but a 2400 mile round trip each time!
Great vid, Mark! Polish over repaint any day! Can I ask, what spray did you use to clean the rims/tyres? If I’d used WD40, it’d still be dripping gunk on the floor!! 😂
Thanks! To clean the rims up and get the braking surface clean and shiny I just used some 00 wire wool and brake cleaner, wiping it down with a clean microfibre cloth.
Just the right amount of crusty..
Me likey a lot
There was only one crusty spot really 🙂 and a bit of wire wool quickly sorted that.
I'm sold at gear change indexing! Dreamy 😂, just too late to the party.
Those XT shifters were pretty crisp! Definitely the best condition ones I’ve used on a bike.
Glad you got a quick buy.
Me too!
I was wondering, is that hub attached with a 10mm bolt? Asking, since you tapped it in with a hammer afterwards..
24.48 I put the 10mm bolt in after cleaning everything up. That was just the plastic end cap/seal being tapped in place.
Ah, thanks for the reply - Could you clarify on the 24.48? What do you mean by that? :)
@@donttouchthisatall it’s the time stamp 🙂
Does anyone know what the brand of grease Mr Shred uses? I've looked everywhere for said bright green grease but have had no suck luck :(
You could either get the shimano branded grease or motorex bike grease 2000. they ares similar if not the same
I use Shimano ‘Premium’ grease. Last time I looked I think it was about £15 for the tube I use.
@KidKatree, you're an absolute saviour thank you ❤
@@MonkeyShredthank you to you and Mr Katree for your help. Been looking for ages and could only find other greases. I know it's not the only one but it irked me not being able to find it
could anything be more 1990s?!
Maybe if it had some fluro!
