So they want to rely less on advertisers, who have shit loads of money, to then rely more on the viewers, who have a lot less money?
Fantastic business minds they have
Loooooooool

Well said.
Bingo!
They want to be more ~CreAtIVe~
They already have a patreon with $5, $10, $25, and $100 tiers, and it's been around since the beginning of the channel
Right? Like just promote it more or add more benifts, add a CZcams join button, do lives with super chat on, but this? 😑
I supported them on patreon bc of my love for ghost files and get early access. But that’s about it. Like there’s basically nothing on there. I think if they put debrief or something like that on there as exclusive content. Like that would be a much better financial decision than making a streaming service… I’m so disappointed and sad I spent my hard earned money for them to just ditch us fans💔

@@user_kH9bw3ns1oh nah

In context, the watcher group used to work for buzzfeed and their moving away from CZcams to another platform that charges users to watch their videos and it doesn’t make sense because they make a lot of money from CZcams and users can watch free too. It’s stupid.

I doubt they would get more money with this switch.
They're yapping for 14 minutes 32 second just to ask their fans money!? That's pathetic
I hope the”Wendy’s effect” works on this. some of y’all might remember a couple of weeks ago Wendy’s said that they were going to raise prices at certain times of day. the decision got such backlash they rolled it back, and even offered discounts.
I love Watcher so much, I hope they reconsider.

Well, they’ll probably be making another one soon lol
Good practice I guess. I doubt they'll do a full course-correct and abandon the streaming platform idea altogether (I'm sure that was expensive to build), but I am half-expecting them to try and mitigate this disaster with an apology-esque video saying they're going to soften the transfer to the streaming platform.
This was such a dumb idea. I don’t know what they expected to happen.
They r leftist.. they always want more for nothing..
I really wonder. It feels like they expected a really warm reception from the fans (which is completely out of touch), and they must be scrambling right now. This is definitely an 'Icarus flying too close to the sun' moment for Watcher.
@@jbearclowater Comment section in that video is damning... They chose the WRONG audience to do this to so I don't understand how thy expected differently. This would be VERY unpopular even if they catered to some more well off audiences that I'm familiar with, but so many of the comments are from lower-income users bringing up the economy (which honestly isn't as bad as it potentially could be in the US so things can get even worse in the future).

Fun fact, they making ALOT of money from their patreon, tours, ads and merch. So there’s no reason for them to say they don’t have any profit. It’s just greedy and asking fans for money when they could scale down the production and find location that doesn’t have 70k rent and don’t buy a damn tesla
Putting their videos on another platform and charge their viewers to watch it? Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?
The 3 stooges apparently
Imagine how livid their Patreon subs are after they dropped the news. They gotta double pay for the monthly sub AND the streamin platform to watch their subpar content.
The CEO Steven lim
People who want to eat $500 steaks covered in gold leaf.
If they did that without leaving CZcams, I would see it as a bad business idea. BUT it's even worse when they are straight up leaving CZcams and expecting their viewers to follow them. The majority of their views watch their content for free, as soon as you remove the "free" sign, people will leave and find something else. The people who were willing to give money already decided to do that through Patreon. So, I guess they need to stop supporting them on Patreon to pay for this site? Or do they expect them to pay for their site and Patreon?
The way the music switched from sad to upbeat when they went in to advertisement mode
Such a shame. I’ve watched Ryan and Shane for over 6 years even when they still were with Buzzfeed and making the transition to Watcher

They also do live shows.
And merch
Don't forget any sponsorships, free accommodation, compensated food etc. I'm pretty sure they get a lot of that for free in exchange for being shown in videos
they sell merch for 80 dollars and merch usually sells out pretty fast
I don't even pay for youtube premium. Why in the world would I pay for the same content just because it doesn't gave ads? Nope. Watcher is now dead in tye water.
it was probably steven's idea. that guy just wants to spend a fuckton of money on expensive food and travelling for a series that does not get many views. like huh, i wonder where you can cut costs???
For real. Compare the premise of Steven's shows to Ryan and Shane's (which for the most part is literally just the two of them in a room with a few props with the exception of Ghost Files and Weird Wonderful)
Shane and Ryan are coming owners. They deserve blame too. People need to stop simping for them when they show their true colours.

*Imagine the most views you have gotten on a video in months is about you quitting making videos* 😭
I used to like Shane and Ryan when they did their Unsolved and Puppet History videos on Buzzfeed. When they moved over to Watcher it felt like a overproduced podcast of stuff that wasn't that interesting.
Edit: Mb Puppet History was on Watcher not Buzzfeed, I'm a little stupid.
Shane died in season 2
Puppet history was produced by watcher not buzzfeed unsolved, yeah I agree with the rest
This is probably a hot take of ours but I agree lmao I didn't watch them when they went independent. It wasn't the same. They weren't just two little dudes who worked together hanging out. I was proud of their success but I preferred their energy when they weren't their own bosses.
No, but Shane had a history show on BF, Ruining History
The thing is, they already have a patreon! Plus Amazon Prime already has their old Buzzfeed show so I don’t think they’d be opposed to partnering with watcher if pitched? Like, going onto another streaming sight for a new show just to see how fans react would have been a smarter move- but to up end their whole channel for their own site?? Plus I’ve been following them since their buzzfeed days. Many fans have; many of us are adults with other financial responsibilities, and use watcher as a get away- putting it behind a paywall just wont fit in with our lives
Feels like a parody. Hits all the notes of an obnoxious apology video
I love those guys so much, I've been watching them since their buzzfeed days. That video was so disappointing to see and it's the first CZcams video I've ever gone out of my way to hit the dislike button on. Soul crushing.
the icing on the cake is that they already have a patreon

Here’s the thing: THEY HAVE A PATREON. they should’ve just focused on that and posted more exclusive content on that while still staying on CZcams.
When the video starts with >serious face, deep breath< that's a huge red flag. 🚩
I feel Shane didn't agree with this plan, body language in the sofa and even his voice is lacking the usual enthusiasm.
Could be wrong but that's the read I get.
This plan is probably from the CEO of Watcher Steven Lim. This is a strange choice for Ryan and Shane to come up with alone given the Buzzfeed history.
This shit is so upsetting
I was having a blast before I got a notification from them...had to immediately read the comments
Been following guys for 7 years and the end of an era is disappointing
I sincerely sincerely hope that the immense backlash convinces them to change their minds. Makes me so genuinely sad
@@yelhsasokolova8561it prolly will
@@yelhsasokolova8561 I hope they do, I’m about to lose my home because of lack of work. Even if I was working enough to afford rent rn I would rather buy $6 of Raman than pay to watch them. This is greed at its core.
They also planned to completely remove all of their CZcams content so that viewers sign up, as told in an interview by Variety. Now, they’ve received horrible backlash and have decided to rescind that decision. It’s just about the worst reaction to anything I’ve ever seen on CZcams by a fanbase (besides their fellow buzzfeed alumni having to cover their asses for the Ned situation)
should’ve announced that they were scaling down production instead 😭
I hope they realize their huge mistake, but I doubt they'll be able to walk it back. A part of me hopes it was a third party that strong armed them into making the change, but another part of me knows people can get greedy, and were probably offered some kind of huge deal to make the switch.
I feel like some "Goodbye" videos are mostly fake. They end up coming back to CZcams within a week or the next following month
Frrrr its just for attention
Yeah but they mostly don’t fuck up so badly and make 90% of active watchers mad
these people will hire a whole camera crew and rent a set just for people like me to listen to the audio while scrolling the comment section
They make TONS of money. From ads, to a 12,000+ member patreon, AND a merch line. It’s not about “making enough to pay staff” it’s about them being greedy and wanting to have both hands in the jar
Been following this all day as (former) fan, still have YET to see a supportive comment…
No one really likes Steven Lim yet he's the CEO.
They dont have enough money but Steven eating the most expensive foods/in restaurants.
They cant have new subs on their streaming services who're just chime in.
They yapping about tv quality but its only bothering THEM, not us.
They make 50-100k/month on patreon, ~3000$/month after views, AND there's merch too.
Its giving greedy....so disappointing. Loved them, now unsubbed.
I think a lot of this is steven desperately trying to become more respected and its backfiring sooooo much
I think it's closer to 600k a month that on patreon.. No?
Steven is the worst :(
It’s not “giving” greedy. It IS pure greed.
They do have enough money
They HAVE a Patreon. With 12k+ subscribers and a bottom tier of $5, MINIMUM they make $60k per month, which is more than some people make in a YEAR!
The audacity of them to ask their subscribers to add yet another subscription service, which are mostly college kids living paycheck to paycheck, btw, and pay for their ultra-high production costs, is one of the most out of touch, and narcissistic things I've ever heard of. If the production cost is too high, lower it, don't hire an entire crew every time you go to a location, do some sh*t yourselves, downsize, do anything but this.
it's the fact that all their budget goes into production quality when no one except them care about it. YT videos have surpassed TV production quality, but back when they didn't care about production quality and was just 2 dudes, a desk, and a black screen with yellow/blue text, they actually HAD the money to go to Mexico's Island of the Haunted Dolls. Steven is blowing all their money on shit that made the quality of their channel WORSE, abandon projects even though they did well, need to fund Steven's lifestyle, and Ryan and Shane are just LETTING THIS HAPPEN.
There are business analyists who are highlighting very important questions (such as, what does the data from your audience say about this?) that were seemingly completely ignored. Steven has no experience running a business, and he's the CEO of Watcher.
Not to mention that in this economy, the vast majority of Watcher fans cannot afford to eat, let alone pay Netflix prices for mid content. We can't find jobs, the ones we do have don't pay us enough to make rent or eat, we're paying off student debts, and the viewers who are minors have the same struggles on a family level. All of this will be unaffordable for international fans as well due to the conversion rates, and they'll be paying up to $30/mo for this.
So Ryan, Shane, Steven, no this isn't "affordable for anyone and everyone." You're out of touch with everything.
The thing is- they already have a Patreon! THEY DO! They mention it a lot! That's the reason I'm confused. If this is about funding... what about the Patreon? What's going on with that?
Never heard of Watcher
Same!
Me either
I haven't either
Same here 😂
This was actually a very good point someone made in the comments of their latest "Goodbye CZcams" video. They argued that moving to their own streaming platform hinders the continued growth and discoverability their channel would have gotten if they just stayed on CZcams which would have made them more money.
The fact they are now moving to their own platform basically kills any and all chance of someone new, like yourself, from finding out about them and subscribing if they just stayed on CZcams.
the real kicker is that they ALREADY HAVE A PATREON 😭
"CZcams taught me to be human"
The first time I was on youtube, a guy threaten to end my family's lives, while the rest were telling him to kill me and leave my family out of it. All of this over a political argument.
Agree on the Patreon thing but here's the thing, my dude - they already have a Patreon
Sometimes it hurts seeing creators you love become greedy and disgusting
They don’t even need to do this like they could do early releases or clips on patreon or something if they want an extra buck 😭
Especially with them already having a patreon
There’s no reason for them to leave their CZcams channel and abandon ship, at least keeping it on the backburner makes so much more sense. If they posted short videos like 5-6 min of clips from the official versions then advertised that the full uncut video could be seen with the subscription service it would work so well, it works extremely well for many other CZcams channels. This is actually heartbreakingly stupid and I cannot believe this is coming from some of the most beloved content creators on the internet right now, EVERYONE loved ghost files, this is just such a sad way to set fire to your legacy
they actually do have a patreon already, with 11.5k members
CZcams is kinda crazy
Crazy for allowing bots like u
So they have been talking about how much money everything cost for a long time. They've been very open that they spend way more money than they have. That's actually my favorite channel, so I'm really bummed. I've watched Ryan and Shane since they were on BuzzFeed in the very beginning, but I'm not paying any amount of money. I'm broke too. They need to just cut back, and make the videos in a much simpler, cheaper way. Like you said it doesn't have to be Netflix. It's freaking CZcams. God this is gonna backfire so bad on them.
I understand their tight profit margins. I spend 30k a year on my videos. However, trying to charge viewers isn’t a good idea at all.
They get like 30-60k A MONTH from pateron though. Maybe instead this dumpster fire they should have promoted the pateron more
2:16 insanely stupid. Their content isn't unfriendly to advertisers. Obviously fkn not given the (actually pretty good) ads they put in their videos. They were sponsored by scentbird, vpns, rocket money, hellofresh, etc etc etc.
Obviously this is an absolute bullshit reason.
They should make a pattern and reach out to an already popular streaming service
No way
They ALREADY had a pateron. It was making 60k a MONTH.
SO.. Maybe they should have promoted it more. And not make this mistake
Someone actually say that they offered very good money to roll ads in their videos but they refuse it
(Take it with grain of salt pls)
The thing is people only watch Watcher for Shane and Ryan (at least a large portion, ik some like the others, but Shane and Ryan made it). Like Shane and Ryan left Buzzfeed and came to Watcher and their fans followed and lifted the channel up. So it's like wow.
Uggghhh, people can't just stick with what's good for them. They always want MORE. You can't always GET more. Sometimes it's not worth it.
"Television content you want"
No one south of 40 wants "television content"
Finally you talk about a topic I havent heard 20 times
They didnt have the common sense to put up a poll on their yt channel - which would have been free feedback.
I loved their buzzfeed videos and when they started their ghost hunting on watcher I was so happy. This sucks though. Im lucky that I have enough spare money to indulge on things, but that's because I still live with my parents at 19. If I paid rent, groceries, gas, and other stuff like that I wouldn't have the extra money to.
Tbh I could get the membership, but I ain't out of solidarity to those who can't.
@@TwiDashFTW honestly kinda the same here. I watched moistcriticals lives for a little last night and he found they also had a patreon.
So idk why they made the change because they already charge some viewers for exclusive content but now want to charge anyone that wants to view them?? I genuinely don't get the thought process. Maybe if they made the paywall site for people who want to help support and get extra content from the support but again, they already had the patreon
@@serenehavencrafts yeah the best thing they could have done is either trouble shoot by releasing a completely new show as exclusive content on their own site. I used to watch them back in thei buzzfeed days. Back then, it was literally just them with some gopros and some amazon basics ghost hunting stuff. I miss that content.
From what I've seen in the comments (because I really don't pay attention -- I barely have money for the like 2 subscriptions I currently have), they already HAVE a patreon that takes in ~$100k/month. They do not, however, have CZcams memberships, which they could have enabled and found a way to make it worth it to people
I want to make a parody of their "goodbye" video so badly!
I watch Watcher pretty much everyday and to see this happen is extreamly disheartening as a loyal viewer. There was also a lot of lead up to the video like "watch out for our next video👀" I had even submitted a story to them on tumblr to read on Too Many Spirits and I want to revoke that if they're gonna read my story and I can't even watch it without spending money. I'm sure if people knew about this beforehand the wouldn't want to submit content to them.
This feels like a massive Steven thing

This feels so much more about EGO than greed/money. They left Buzzfeed and started their own company and want it to be more than “just a CZcams channel”. They seem to have high quality filmmaker aspirations yet hope to rely on Shane and Ryan’s likability alone to fund it. 😬
They got 25 employees 💀, no but fr I love this channel I’m really sad.
I really dislike this Lim guy, I don’t even understand why he’s around
I love those guys, ive been there since season 2 on unsolved true crime but sadly as i stated below in a comment on their channel I think this is a goodbye. The financial thing is a whole thing I dont want to get into but I also feel that when they moved to watcher they could never quite capture the escense of the og series. Ryan just doesnt seemed scared anymore and mysteries in my opinion is trash when compared to true crime.
I never thought the reason The watcher would be trending was because of this. I have seen though on tiktok that people are sharing one account for their streaming thingy, I think they made a discord to stream any new videos. It sucks I loved their ghost files, and mystery files videos.
Not everyone wants to buy a subcription service
Those live reactions are INSAAAAANE
For the first time in history CZcams has overtaken all streaming services except Netflix in viewer numbers. On the other hand, legacy media is dying, the ad rates are way down, the entire entertainment industry is struggling and this is the time they decide to switch business models, start charging 6$ and doing it on their own?! I mean, O.K., if that is how much you believe in the quality of your content and the loyalty of your audience. I just hope this venture isn't the only thing they got going, in case it fails.
This is all Stephen Lim's fault *I KID I KIIIID*. Joking aside, we subscribed to Shane and Ryan's content for the laughs and discussion, we didn't subscribe to their content for a budget covering 9 producers. We loved their episodes when the set was a simple table with a wall and a mannequin in the background.
What's crazy is that THEY HAVE HAD A PATREON for YEARS and never promoted it!! They had an already established avenue of funds they could expand - advertise it more, amp up the content there to draw more people in, etc. They've apologized and shifted their approach by now, but still.
