    What an incredible voice and technique! His voice was already lirico-spinto here, and to do all this florid singing and death defying leaps with such volume and intensity is truly astounding. He sings Verdi at the same high level as his Rossini. He is a unique and very special artist.

      So true.
      My masterclass teacher recently recommended this aria for me. I feel it's not suited to me as I am more of a spinto than a lyric with a heroic tendency.
      Hearing this gives me some reason to give the aria a try.
      Indeed the world has lost many tenors to time.

    There are so few singers who truly achieve an effortless legato line, which is absolutely necessary for Rossini. What tenor alive today can even begin to favorably compete with Vargas as far as this is concerned? His effortless and perfect technique, coupled to breath control that is second to none and his intelligent and very believable interpretation make him one of the tenors to reckon with as the very best of the best! Bravo Vargas! You're TOPS to me!

    Exacto.

    Jussijoosua- You can still see his Nemorino in San Francisco on 11/26 if you are in the area. Otherwise, he'll be at Carnegie Hall in New York on 12/08 for the Verdi Requiem.On 12/15, he will start his run of Bohemes at the MET through early January. Then he goes to Vienna for Manon and Onegin.RV did Romeo at the Met and Houston a few years back. He's been singing a lot of Verdi and some Mozart in Europe and US too. Next season, he'll be in Berlioz' Damnation, then in Verdi's Attila at the MET.

    The only tenor out there right now who could do this any justice is Larry Brownlee...but back when Vargas was still singing Rossini, he also had to contend with Francisco Araiza, and Rockwell Blake (who is the defining Rossini tenor of his/their generation, in my opinion). NO ONE could sing Rossini as cleanly as Rocky, and if I'm watching/listening to Rossini, it has to be clean.

    There are CZcams videos from user camilla0690 showing RV singing Foresto;s heaviest music, the aria and cabaletta from the Prologue. I'd be interested to know what was painful about it. RV's leaving Rossini was a blessing to the entire opera world that experienced some void created by the slowing down of Domingo and Pavarotti. Also,he was not really an exclusive Rossini specialist right from the start. He did Werther,Tamino,Edgardo,Faust,Verdi,etc.

  • @alexgomez2
    @alexgomez2 Před 17 lety +1

    I think Ramon´s rendition is amazing, but the opening is too fast ans although his technique is pristine he doesn´t have the flexibility of Francisco Araiza. What I certainly agree on is that he has something in common with Araiza though. Gorgeous voices and incredible acting stiffness

    A veces me sacan de quicio los comentarios de alguna gente. Es como si fueran sordos... o definitivamente lo son.
    Francisco me parecía maravilloso. Alguien me dijo un supuesto comentario suyo, que ya no sentía su voz tan ágil y por eso cambió de repertorio. Fue una pena porque debió quedarse en algo que fuera cerca del belcanto. Me gustaba muchísimo antes del cambio de repertorio.

  • @alexgomez2
    @alexgomez2 Před 16 lety

    You should see Francisco Araiza singing this aria. You'll notice that although Araiza's is not the greatest acting, he adds excitement to his singing which, due to his great singing technique, is never compromised. There shouls be a balance. We don't want the gross overacting of Villazón, nor the statuesque attitude of the Great Pavarotti.

  • @danbar73
    @danbar73 Před 17 lety

    At this point in the opera, he just dropped his comic role of
    the valet in disguise and assumed his princely duties. His dignified demeanor and movements are quite appropriate. Much of his acting is in the voice. I don't know how the stiff acting thing got started. I saw him crack up an audience over and over as Nemorino; I saw him jump from the floor to table tops as Hoffman a few times at every performance. He does not do a lot of arm flapping and facial distortions as cover up.

  • @alexgomez2
    @alexgomez2 Před 16 lety

    I guess the difference between Villazón and Araiza is that the later has never stopped singing due to bad technique. I have been to two of Araiza´s Cenerentola's, once as part of the cast. I´ve reviewed the scores and his tempo changes are within the style (we´re not talking Mozart´s metronomic style here) and done tastefully. I love Vargas' voice but I'd love a bit more of interpretation. Villazón RULED while he was around. I hope he'll come back understanding the limitations of his own voice.

    I totally agree that we don't want Ramon to do the horrific overacting of Villazón which just like in the case of Domingo, he uses to distract from the forcefulness of his voice production. Ramon needs to losen up a little bit and offer the whole package. The days of the singing statue are gone with the great Pavarotti. Singers need to study acting more!

    Not quite. He stopped because his voice was failing. In the 70s, Plácido Domingo went from Rodolfo and Alfredo, to Othello on schedules that many thought to be crazy and yet, he NEVER stopped. Domingo's technique was never the best, specially as he "covers" by rolling his tongue, yet, he continues singing. I have nothing against Villazón. As a Mexican I should be proud of him and I am! But the fact that he's proven to be his worst detractor is a fact.

    What easiness and fluency! His technique is perfect. He is much better than Brownlee but not better than Juan Diego Florez, though he has a bigger voice than JDF. Florez - in my opinion - is the best in this aria and generally as Don Ramiro because in addition to his unusually beautiful voice and greatest precision his rendition is the most artistic and sensitive one and he has captivating grace.
