The HARDEST 1 Mile Hike in America | Black Canyon of the Gunnison

  • Could this be the hardest 1 mile hike in America? Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park rivals the Grand Canyon, and it is only a 1 mile hike to the bottom. Beginning from the south rim, we hiked the Gunnison Trail. This is one of Colorado's more unique hike. A primitive, meaning no trail markers, trail to the bottom of the canyon. Park rangers limit the permits to 15 PEOPLE per day down this trail. Snag one of these permits and you will not be disappointed. Black Canyon of the Gunnison is the most underrated park in Colorado and maybe the entire national park system.

    Great hike guys. When yall were on the way down and in good spirits I was like "wait till they have to go back up". I haven't gotten the chance to do this yet but had a good friend do it and she said she wanted to cry on the way back up lol. It's so beautiful down there at the bottom I know it's worth it

    Nice video, beautiful at the bottom. We are in our 60s and hike everywhere we can in the U.S. You'll be hiking at our age too, but probably not this one again, lol!

    did this in oct 2020, awesome hike, and the poison ivy turning red in the late fall was something else. Would love to go back and do some of the other wilderness routes to the bottom

    This is one I've wanted to do for a few years now. Last time I went there we didn't have time to hike down, but I'm gonna go back!

    Love the Black Canyon but never had the guts to try to hike down into it. Now I'm much too old and decrepit but I love watching you two hike it.
    Interesting story: the last time I visited several months ago there was a mom and two kids about 10-11, who were arguing about taking a hike down to the bottom. Not sure which trail. But anyway the kids didn't want to go and she kept telling them their choice was to hike down into the canyon or do homework. Didn't seem like she really understood how deep and steep that canyon is. Hoping the kids opted to study and let mom do the hiking.
    Anyway love your series!

      I also hope they did not go down unless they were avid hikers. As always, we tested our abilities to the max on this one. Looking back, this was such a unique trail, but still lots of fun. Iv read you can drive to the bottom and I do not think all the trails are straight down like the Gunnison Trail. Thank you for the comment and support!

    My buddy and I did this in June 2020 to do some fly fishing, but we camped next to the river for 3 nights. Great hike, but 70 pound bags made it quite difficult both down and up. We're planning another tip this year, but probably doing the north rim this time. The rangers said there was a lot more river access. Great video!

      @SOSASATSUNRISE  Před 2 lety

      Thats awesome! I cannot imagine hauling a 70 pound bag up this canyon. I wish we would have camped and I have heard the fishing is unreal. Thanks for watching!

    its weird how adding music and some good camera shots makes anything look better than it is. I live 20 mins from here. Been there so many times that the wow factor is gone.
    We just drive down to the bottom and walk the shore fishing and yes there is a road that goes to the river.

      Challenging but rewarding hike! From what the ranger told us while we were getting our permit, this is a primitive hike. The intent is to limit the amount of hikers to allow everyone the time to be alone in nature and to rely on your trail finding skills rather than following markers. Although we endured some extra exhaustion after getting off trail, it is all part of the experience on this particular trail. Happy hiking and thanks for watching!

    The view from the bottom is always so cool in another way. That's one of the things that has me going back to Zion in Utah. It takes that feeling of being tiny that you usually get at a giant canyon and enhances it.

    Can you tell me more how the permits work?

    • @SOSASATSUNRISE
      @SOSASATSUNRISE  Před 3 lety

      This is all from memory but I know you must obtain a permit at the south rim visitor center the day before the hike. I think they start registration at 3:30. 15 permits are given per day. They say everyone in your party must be present but there was someone who got permits for their party of 4 since there was only about 8 of us there.

      Amber's shoes are Vivo barefoot. Both of us prefer a shoe that allows the foot to move and flex naturally. After a few weeks of slowly strengthening muscles to handle the lack of support, we have found this style to be our favorite. Thanks for watching!
