It sounds like intonation is a real challenge, especially around the 8th - 12th partials.
I'm betting the instruments were all made by different manufacturers and that can cause some real difficult wobbles--I love the sound of older/conical bore instruments but I don't think they were as concerned with fine tuning as now...
