The brick castle was built in the 14th century, in a place where wooden fortifications had existed since the 13th century. The building was built in the times of Casimir III the Great, but there is no certainty that it was this ruler who founded it. The original castle covered only the highest part of the hill on the rock and consisted of a tower and a residential building. In later years, successive owners of the castle financed a number of modernizations and reconstructions. In this way, the Rabsztyn castle at the end of the 16th century became a Renaissance residence with only small Gothic remains in the upper castle. A non-defensive lower castle was also built at that time. In 1573, King Henry Valois, invited by the then owner of Rabsztyn, Seweryn Boner, stayed here. The decline of Rabsztyn's importance falls on the times of the Swedish Deluge, when in 1657 the retreating Swedish troops set the castle on fire. Since then, the castle gradually fell into ruin. It was finally abandoned, however, only at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1901, a group of treasure hunters blew up the tower of the upper castle. Reconstruction and revitalization of the building took place in the 21st century. In 2021, the castle was opened to the public.
