Don McLean was reading a book I believe to be Dear Theo by Irving Stone. It's a collection of letters written by Vincent to his brother Theo. And yes Vincent wrote as well as he painted. Strong recommendation.

"the lovely linen land" refers to painters canvas Vincent was insane and spent time in an asylum. he started painting at 27 and died by suicide 10 years later. He never sold a painting when alive, and now they go at auction for $60 million dollars. that is what nameless faces on empty walls and nameless painting in empty halls means..it it s the story of Vincent.... and Starry Night was his most famous painting. Look up his art. his colors we incredible...especially his blues....if you look at all of his art you will recognize the paintings described in the song....his next most famous painting was of SUNFLOWERS....

Sadly, Vincent only sold one painting when he was alive "The Red Vineyard" which is worth millions now.
