  • It started out as a day like any other on the bike but, before Michael knew it, he was bracing for impact with an oncoming vehicle thinking "Oh my god, this is it". The crash led him on a trajectory that would eventually result in him becoming the founder of the Belgian Waffle Ride, click here to learn more about it: belgianwaffler...

I've only met briefly met Michael once, but we shared several emails and it was fun getting to share our love for cycling, music, etc...He is a super guy and every bit the sincere guy you see here.

I was hit twice last year by cars in two separate incidents six months apart. The first was a hit and run, but I escaped with just minor cuts and bruises. The second collision was Oct 2019. I car hit me pretty bad. My head 'bullseyed' the windscreen and I was thrown 20 yards in the air. There's nothing more sobering than hearing and feeling your own head crack a windscreen with some force. I was awake and lucid through the entire incident. In terms of luck (if you can call getting hit by a car lucky) I won the lottery. Not only was there an off duty trauma nurse nearby, but also an off duty doctor who looked after me while I lay in the road in agony. Also, months later when I finally took a look at my mangled bike, I had my pedal perfectly aligned with the rear chainstay, so that bizarrely transfer the impact of the car where it hit me through the frame rather than my leg. I escaped the collision with just a broken ankle and a very mangled flesh on my right knee. When the car first hit me, I thought 'this is it'. All I could think about when kissing my wife and hugging my son. Later, as I was recovering, I decided that I wasn't happy with my life anymore. My priorities had changed. I had been pretty successful in my job as a press photographer (I won a major award while I was layed up at home), but I had been pretty unhappy with my work/life balance taking me away from my wife, young son and poorly father, who I care for. Like the guy in the video says, it was a wake up call to change my life. I am not much happier in a new job, but I haven't ridden on the road since and instead made the switch to riding gravel.

James, thanks for sharing that story. It's always sobering to read and hear about stories like yours and Michael's. I'm so glad that things aligned in such a way that you came out of your accident relatively ok.

I crashed 6 weeks ago and had to be airlifted to the hospital as well, it's terrifying how vulnerable you are on a bike against a car.

Of all the questions floating around my head the one I find most important to me, and maybe anyone else who may be watching this video is do you still ride.
