Mahesh: This is brilliant. I grew up in the 80s in India and I used to bring the ephemeris table to my dad and his guru. I used to hear the terms ayanamsa and the nirayana methods. Your explanation is so brilliant. When I used to probe, they couldn't explain it. But, they were gurus in using it. Your explanation makes me understand in one sitting (of course, I paused and played it a few times). Your illustration is excellent and the pace is just perfect. May God bless you with long and good health to disseminate the knowledge treasure in Vedic astrology and connect it to astronomy so more people can connect better. Thank you!!!

Selam. This is the best introduction to zodiacs that I've come across. Steady, thorough, appropriately repetitive, great visual aids. Fantastic work. I hope you're well. I notice you haven't posted in a while. Your work is still making an impact.

Thank you so much for so wonderfully simplifying concepts of ayanamsa and sayana and nirayana which always eluded me inspite of reading numerous times their definitions. I have no words to express my gratitude other then saying "Guru Bless".

    Greetings from Hunedoara, Transylvania, Romamia.
I studied astrology too little to be able to figure out something soft, it's tropical, it's sidereal. Who can convince me with a software, or whatever, now that I'm writing these lines, the sun is Pisces or Aquarius ?!
    p.s.
I also accept a video with this challenge.

  • @ramachandranguruswamyiyer5712

One important point has been omitted. The Nirayana or Sun's position is linked with distance between Sun Moon and Earth causing waxing and waning of Moon and Thithi starts from Mid day and ends at Mid day of the next day
Hence Nirayana System is necessary to synchronise position of Earth and Stars with Sun. Without position of Sun astrology will be incomplete. However festivals are celebrated not with reference to Lunar Month nor Solar Month but with Sayana Month only. This year Mahvir Jayanthi coinciding with Chitra Purnama is celebrated at Uthra Phalgun of Solar Mina Masa. Similarly Buddha Purnima falls not on Vishaka but at Chithra. The complexity is. Ganesh Chaturthi usually falling on Solar Simha Masa this year falls on Sayana Bhadrapadha but Solar Kanya Masa

Even though the old texts mostly refer to constellations and mention the equinox only a couple times, you always have to remember they were only an observer of patterns not the creator of the "astrological effect" itself, so even they did not know where the effect was really coming from -- they were only observers. not to mention they didnt know there was a precession of the equinox, so they always believed that the constellation Aries would match up with the vernal equinox.
    There are two scenarios:
There could be some kind of energy shift at the start of each season and its effect was what the babylonians observed but didn't know at the time - if this is true than "western" placements + original way of calculations + original definitons should be more accurate.
If the energy comes from the stars (many light years away) then sidereal adjusted placements + original calculations + original definitons should be accurate.
We must keep the original Vedic calculations and definitions because in order to find the objective, accurate starting point, we must have only one changing variable + keep other variables constant.
What I think is that this "astrological pattern" is derived from the gravity of the planets themselves. In reality it is probably much more complicated but it likely stems for that idea.
The "vedic" ways of calculation and its definition is much more accurate, but the starting point is up for debate.: and we must at some point carry out mass readings and have unbiased, qualified vedic astrologers to apply their vedic calculations to both placements, create unbiased, complete analysis, and have mass amounts of participants rate which one is more accurate.

Please. It is not like that. The 12-sign zodiac was inherited by the Hindus from the West, i.e. from the Caldean-Egyptian system, but when they inherited, they kept it sidereal, to say better, they re-make it forcedly sidereal. The zodiac is and has always been related to the solstices, not to the nakshatras. The Indians turned everything sidereal because they were originally working with only a "lunar zodiac" based on the 27 or 28 nakshatras. The Arabic tradition mixed the two system, not much unlikely what some contemporary astrologers are doing when using the tropical chart with sidereal nakshatras. The European Medieval and Renaissance tradition, instead, disregarded the nakshatras and kept using the solar zodiac (tropical) as per the Tolemaic school. If Indians were so advanced and smart, they should have discovered the 12-sign zodiac first instead of translating it into Sanskrit and incorporating it into a sidereal system. The zodiac is tropical and should be used like it is not only to construct ANY chart, but also to make predictions, to understand someone's profile, etc.
