    • @d.v.3314
      @d.v.3314 Před rokem +27

      He might because he had a sort of Christian theme going with Melkor and Sauron, Melkor was very much Lucifer rebelling against God (but when you look at it, what Melkor was doing wasn’t even all that evil, he was just rejecting Manwë’s rigid control)
      BUT, at the same time, Tolkien filled his stories with men who were unafraid to love both platonically and romantically, who hugged and touched and held their friends and showed affection without hesitation, because Tolkien was a veteran who saw far too little love and compassion between men and wanted a world where men COULD be compassionate, gentle, and affectionate without it being insulting to their masculinity. He made Melkor and Sauron either close, close friends or possibly lovers. I think he would at the very least understand that such sympathizers will exist. He wouldn’t LIKE them at all, because he was pretty rigidly Christian iirc, but he would understand that there’s bound to be SOME. Because he made sure that even the evildoers and villains of his story were still affectionate and loving to one another: he was aware there is a little light and dark in everyone.

      @@Yehoshua66 SO first and foremost, God and Satan aren't any more real than Melkor and Sauron.
      Second, Melkor's tempting Sauron away from the Ainar is referred to as "The seduction of Mairon" and Sauron is referred to once in the texts as "most beloved Maiar of Melkor". When Melkor is facing down the enemy and about to die, Sauron tries to get him to run and hide with him, but Melkor refuses and instead tells Sauron to go alone. Sauron won't hear of it, so Melkor commands him, and then he begs. Finally, Sauron leaves; Melkor makes his last stand and is banished into the void for it. He cared enough for his underling to sacrifice himself for Sauron? I doubt that. His lover, or his best friend, on the other hand...
      Sauron then dedicates the rest of his time on Middle Earth not to creating a cult in his own name, but in MELKOR'S name. He perverts and corrupts the Numenoreans in Melkor's name, not his own. He creates a religion dedicated to Melkor to tell the Ainar, "Look; you took him, but I am still here, and I will make sure you can't erase him from history. I will make sure you never forget Melkor."
      Melkor created the dragons as fiery, golden, arrogant, cruel, spiteful monsters who hoard jewels. His second-in-command was a fire Maia with golden hair who was arrogant, cruel, and spiteful, with a love of fine things and gold.
      Sauron named his battering ram after Melkor's hammer.

    • @southernlady5085
      @southernlady5085 Před 3 měsíci +32

      (Re: “…rooting for him.”) However, Tolkien distinguished between good and evil much more succinctly. Certainly, Sauron was a seducer, manipulator, and liar; he was clearly the personification of Evil. Tolkien made that very clear. I think rather that society today has blurred distinctions between the two, and this is what the writing of ROP reflects. He’s become a more sympathetic character by the writers as today society has fallen into a trap of feeling sympathy for those who are and do evil. Sometimes, media, in its various forms, will explain it away with a sympathetic back story or satiric story line ( as in the tv series “Lucifer.”) As one who survived the Somme in the Great War, Tolkien saw Evil up close and personal and he saw what men could do who embraced Evil. Evil is Evil- and we would do well to remember that, especially as much of society can’t even identify the Decalogue anymore and has settled for a general, feel good, sort of spirituality. This is exactly the situation where Evil will fester and grow, a society where there are no longer moral absolutes, no definitive right and wrong. Look around. This is why crime is skyrocketing, our cities under siege by lawlessness, and innocent life is taken savagely. Evil abounds and we need to wake up to its wholly destructive force.

    Sauron isn't called the Deciever for nothing. He's been spiraling down a dark path long before their paths crossed. There isn't good left in him. He's only continuing the work he's always wanted, which is dominion of all Middle Earth.
    After his body was destroyed in Numenor, the only physical form he's been able to take on was of an scorched, burning man-like being, wreathed in flame. Evil changes the appearence of the spirits of Middle Earth. Same thing happened to Morgoth after his descend.

      So glad I found a sane comment. I don't mind the shipping, it works in an angsty way like him not seeing her the way she sees him (non-canonically of course). But all this blaming of Galadriel and the iron-clad conviction that he turned dark because she rejected him... it annoys me how so many missed the unspoken plot point when he said "I would make you A queen" and she replied with "and you, MY king". And he did not correct her. Because that's exactly the nature of their relationship, which Galadriel finally perceived - he would make her think she could rule by his side, but actually he would lord over her the way Morgoth ruled above him. The show has many faults, but this scene is one of its better moments. making Sauron charming, relatable, reliable, down-to-earth yet elusive, mysterious, vague and hard to interpret fits so well with the image that his book counterpart conjures up in the imagination.
