    LOM thanks a bunch for this video! I was struggling SO FIN MUCH with how to get my hand up in there to remove the positive and ground wires and was ready to take the exhaust pipe coming off the manifold. Did not want to do that because the bolts were rusted and was afraid of breaking them off inside the manifold, making MORE work for myself. Removing the inner liner is definitely the easier way to go!

    You're famous! All the other videos reference yours when they say you dont have to remove the drive shaft. Youre top of the list. Congrats!

    It is absolutely not necessary to remove driveshaft or wheel well. Disconnect bat. ground, lift and support vehicle, Remove (4) 13mm bolts holding engine shield, Squeeze and remove starter signal wire and then remove 13mm nut holding bat. cable, remove (2) - 15mm bolts holding starter with long extension and swivel socket and pull starter through area between axle and oil pan, installation reverse of removal. - no problemo-plenty of room....takes 20 min. Professional mechanic 1988-present.

      I will try it next time if I have to replace my starter again but when I did it the first time I did not have any room to disconnect the starter but thanks for the tip I hope it helps others. I always appreciate professional opinions.

    Today at work I got to install a starter on a similar model and let me tell you it was a pain in the ass i had to do everything you just did and it took me 2 hours to complete the job this vehicle has little to no wiggle room and several tight unnecessary suspension parts that get in the way.

    Appreciate the DIY video!!! Just had to change the starter on my 2008 Jeep Commander 3.7 I removed it from under the vehicle, I only took off the splash pan (& battery terminals for safety) however those two screws to the starter were a pain to get to. Once loose it was smooth sailing!!!!

      So you didnt take the wheel off or anything on your 08? What tools did you use?

    • @ShyRage1
      @ShyRage1 Před 4 lety +1

      Just wanted to add input. I have an 08 3.7 liter 2wd. I just lifted the vehicle on Jack's and used tools with extensions. I did not have to take off wheel or move anything else. Took me about an hour in all

    FYI 12 volt system won’t shock you but you can short to ground and do some damage. I always unhook both terminals just to be safe

  • @YouStupidBunny
    @YouStupidBunny Před 5 lety +11

    Just an FYI for others: If you have a power ratchet, drive shaft removal will give you more room to work, but is not necessary.
    Disconnect negative battery post
    Remove the skid plate. 13mm
    Disconnect yellow pinch spade clip
    Remove 13mm positive starter bolt and cable
    Remove two 15mm starter mounting bolts
    If equipped, separate heat shield from starter
    Drop down through space provided
    Reverse process for installation

    What’s grinding on my fly wheel? I wanna say a starter short obviously but does this mean the starter is bad? I was having oil from the valve covers leaking into the plug tubes but got that fixed any suggestions?

  • @BlaineCreek

    This is a tough starter to change, but removing the driveline isn’t necessary. Neither is removing wheel well plastic. There’s room beside the oil pan to pull it out easily.

    How do you know it was not the spade connection to the starter ?

    • @ShyRage1
      @ShyRage1 Před 4 lety

      I would assume the power going to the starter was checked first. If so and starter isnt working, I'm gonna say it's a bad starter

    The mechanics charged 2 hrs work to replace warrantied starter said had to clean wires too. Didnt seem right. If it could be done they could put faulty parts all the time n make money on re installing. Am i wrong

      I ended up knocking itself myself. Super easy job and you don't have to take the tire off. Just have extensions

    • @lomjeep4810
      @lomjeep4810  Před 4 lety

      You should have much more room to work with. The starter should come out without dropping the shaft.

    2022-Feb notes: COMMANDER 4.7 not 3.7, not 5.7
    my 2008 4.7 4dr 4wd had to replace the starter, so decided to drop drive shaft.
    Should have done that FIRST, wasted a lot of time doing other things.
    Once I did drop the shaft, access to old starter was much much better.
    0 - Disconnect battery.
    1 - Raise driver front wheel and put 2 jack stands underneath for safety. chock rear wheel and use emergency brake unless frozen/dead from rust.
    2 - Put transmission in neutral. This allows you to spin front left wheel to get to driveshaft bolts.
    3 - mark driveshaft alignment before removing any bolts. remove/lower front driveshaft. Do NOT remove rock guard or inner fender plastic or wheel/tire, not needed.
    4 - Disconnect 13mm power wire from old starter, and squeeze trigger wire off old starter,
    5 - Using long 12-24 inches of 3/8 extensions and wobble extensions remove 2 starter 15mm mounting bolts.
    6 - you can now lower old starter WITH HEAT SHIELD ATTACHED thru driveshaft area.
    NOTE::
    front driveshaft uses 2 sizes of bolts to connect to front axle and transfer case Transfer case bolts are the shorter ones. Longer in front, shorter in rear.
    No need to remove wheel
    No need remove plastic inner liner
    No need remove rock guard (but it is easy 2 bolts. More visibility.
    Hope this helps
