Accompanied by female musicians, an all-male bharatanatyam ensemble from the Temple of Fine Arts Inner Space Dance perform choreography by Darbar Festival co-curator Mavin Khoo.
The musicians provide an extended prologue of spiritual Bhajan hymns alluding to the spirit of Lord Rama pre-performance. This provides an entry to the mythological world of the Ramayana through the lens of the ten headed demon god Ravana.
This new work explores three scenes from the epic; the abduction of Sita, the building of the bridge by Rama’s army of monkeys and the killing of Ravana.
The work explores these scenes through a hybridised Bharata Natyam form specific to the multi layered body of the Malaysian dancer. Incorporating a strong interplay between music and dance and the cross-cultural interpretations of the Indian Ramayana and the South East Asian ‘Story of Ravana’, the work aims to provide an alternative perspective to our understanding of the demon God, King of Lanka.

I think I have a story behind this dance in the first the Ravan decides to control his senses and all the other dancers represent his senses and different parts of life and when they say Vijaya then he start winning, and all the senses come under its control ,then we see all the senses doing what he is doing that is he is controlling his senses in all aspects of life after that he even transcends that and now he is dancing in a different way than rest of senses that is he can control the sense and simultaneously do other things and after that we saw his demise

No doubt it’s well danced sung and has intense energy. But this is not bharatha-natyam. This channel often being very authentic and sometimes the source of knowledge for many that don’t know Indian fine arts, may take your title as truth.
I don't how you can call it, but according to me it is still bharata natyam. They use bhava, stana, steps, they tell a story, they develop the emotion of a character, it's still in the spirit of bharata natyam. It's maybe in a different form that you usually watch. Maybe we can talk about a neo form of bharata natyam, or a modern form of bharata natyam. I don't know. The debate is open :)

I guess if you know what bharatanatyam means truly so I suggest you have a conversation and pour out what you feel to the choreographer Mavin Khoo.
Get in touch with him , no point being so defensive about what Bharatanatyam is etc etc on social media.
