Heavy trail erosion to Leavitt Lake. Was it worth the risk?

  • I made this video to warn the public, right now, this trail is heavily eroded and it might not be reasonably safe for AWDs to traverse this terrain. We have a heavily modified Jeep Gladiator, a lifted Toyota 4runner TRD Off-road, a modified Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2, my ‪@traxda2756‬ 3.5" lifted Honda Passport with Eibach springs, and ‪@k20z3allmotorFTW‬ NART extended FLEX Ridgeline struts/shocks and a ZF9 equipped Honda Ridgeline with similar modifications, two Subaru Foresters, a Subaru Outback, Toyota highlander, an Acura MDX and to top it off, we have a bone stock 2019 Acrua RDX with summer performance tires. Yikes! Are we going to make it through?

    Reminds me of a story I found about the 1st Gen MDX development when a couple of engineers were in a mule testing the original VTM-4 system. And of course he admitted that they didn’t know anything about “off-roading” since Honda hadn’t done it on four wheels yet. So they go out to a trail and they get in a little bit and can’t turn around, so they have to keep going and eventually, the trail just keeps getting worse until they are just about full on rock crawling. Eventually, they get to a point where they can turn around and there are a couple of Jeep guys there that were like “you got up here in THAT!!!”

      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před rokem

      I was in contact with Tommy from TFL last year, but I never got the chance to meet up with Him. They’re very busy people, but would love the chance to meet them in person. TFL can be very straight forward, but I don’t feel that they ever mocked the Ridgeline. It’s one of the few vehicles that climbed Gold Mine hill. They did an off-road test with a Ford Ranger, and they complimented how the Ridgeline performed, especially now that it has the ZF9 transmission. I’d like to see them build a cement shelf climb obstacle, something that will always stay consistent.

      @jg8263 Před rokem +1

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring You're right, mocked was perhaps too strong a characterization on my part. With the early 2017's they were begrudgingly appreciative. When it did good, it was often, "it did great, but...". Either way, I am glad they are warming up to the unibody trucks overall. I still love their content.
      I do hope that collab happens, and I agree a few uniformly repeatable obstacles, like a shelf, would be nice in addition to the dynamic obstacles they already have.

The cool thing is Honda listened to the feedback and put the ZF9 in the Ridgeline in 2020. Toyotas (and Hondas) are just over built. So pushing them to the limits doesn’t seem to be much of a problem. Reliability and dependability go a LONG WAY. When we were testing out the new Ford Bronco, the axle boots ripped after 5K miles with only a 1.5” lift kit. My Passport was still on original axles with 113K miles. You can outfit the Defender (and most Land Rovers) with street based all-seasons and perform off-road like a they have aggressive all-terrains, due to some great electronics. Though the Land Rovers are backed up with some serious off-road hardware as well. But seeing them rock crawl in mud with smooth all-seasons is impressive.

    Love seeing AWD vehicles pushed and showing their capabilities. My oldest daughter has a 2003 Lexus RX300 with 235/70r16 Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT's, and although she's never been off road with it, the AWD system pulls it through deep snow that it has no business going through!😂

      Just like picking A/T vs mud terrain tires, We also consider the percentage of the time spent commuting vs the time off-road. If we commute 28 days only to off-road 3, an awd that can still get to the end of the trail makes more sense. Road manners are as important as mpg and capability.

      I have the ridgeline, was going to get a Tacoma but they are just to small inside and was not very happy with really anything it offered technology wise, usability, engine, transmission etc. to many compromises and at the time I was looking for something mainly to do my shop duties. I had no idea it would be a decent off road truck as well. 22-25mpg on 33 inch tires not a bad thing either

      @JonDZ_Adventuring  Před rokem

      I'll admit it. I was too fat to fit in a 2019 Tacoma. It was my first choice. I had a 2008 FJ, so didn't want to go back into the same platform with a 4 runner (I fit much better in one, still kinda tight though). What really sold me with the Passport was how quick it was. I couldn't believe it was able to accelerate that quick for it being so big and heavy, I thought it was supercharged. I guess Crawl ratio can be used for spirited WOT launches :P

      Haha! We just got back from there. California has some of the hardest trails in the USA. This is where the Rubicon is. We also have level 10/10 4WD trails where you’d need custom buggies to lay on their sides to maneuver though an obstacle. I’m not into that, I can’t afford a $1 million crawler buggy.
      My last video I released 8 days ago was about imogene pass. Very non technical trail, but it was high elevation and steep, and only a handful of AWDs would have the gearing to summit.
