⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ NYC Subway Timelapse - The A Express to Rockaway Park

  • The A line of the New York City Subway provides express service between Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. It has three southern branches; Lefferts Boulevard, Far Rockaway, and Rockaway Park. The branches that run to Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park are especially interesting, as they travel over a causeway and two bridges that traverse Jamaica Bay.
The A line currently uses R32 and R46 type cars, with a single set of R68/A-type cars also used during the PM rush hour. The R32s have a passenger-accessible front window, which allows for a great view out of the front of the train. This allowed for this video to be taken. Enjoy!

I enjoyed riding the A from the Rockaways last week. I spent a little time on the beach near Beach105th Street two Sundays ago. I tried to catch an R46 A train that was serving the Rockaway Park branch so the MTA can fix up part of the Hammels Wye. I prefer riding the R46s on the A because they have face forward seats where I can stare out the window without twisting my neck too much. I might stay in the Rockaways on my next vacation to New York so I can enjoy the ride along the causeways between the beach & the rest of the city.

As an ex train operator, this was the pain of overnight drivers since it had to make all the stops. This train went to rockaway park instead of far rockaway. Far rockaway is the longest route and has open ocean views. Most of the A train route is safe to ride cause Brooklyn and Queens got wussy!

Honestly, in my honest opinion, they should just make Rockaway Park service Shuttle Only or bring back the (K) train, to go from WTC to Rockaway Park. One of the reasons why I think rockaway park shuttle only service would be good is because it would go all the way to Euclid Avenue, therefore giving passengers an easy connection fo Brooklyn.

Blake McNamara That would only do so much in the short term. However in the medium term, there should be a connection between the Broadway Line and the Fulton Street Line and then to the Jamaica Line, which would allow for increased capacity on the Fulton Street alone by rerouting the R and W to the Fulton Local tracks, with the R going to Jamaica Center and the W to Euclid Avenue. The C would then be express to Lefferts Blvd (without local-express interlining in Brooklyn) whole the A solely serves the Rockaways. With the elevated section of the J train between Broadway Junction and Cypress Hills eliminated, the J would operate between Broadway Junction and 95th Street.
In the long term, the R and W would be rerouted to Red Hook and service in Brooklyn replaces by Second Avenue Subway service, while keeping the Fulton alone deinterlined.

Where is Euclid Avenue? Maybe I missed it. A few years ago while I was visiting NY for a month, I camped at a friends place.
Every morning we would take the A into Manhattan and I would wander off exploring the entire city, and he would be off to his classes at NYU.
It was truly a fantastic time. Although I would say, there were a few times I felt extremely unsafe during the night at Euclid since I was always a few feet within a conversation turned sour and a brawl in full swing.

Euclid Avenue was the second to last station in the video (at the 3:13 mark) before the train went above ground. If you look carefully, you will see two MTA workers in the Dispatcher's Office look in the direction of the videographer as if they were saying "hey, take a look at this".

Daniel K from the end of the A (207th street)to either Far Rockaway or Rockaway Park is about 2 and half hours on a good day. You should try it sometimes

I live in Toronto and a college student (tight budget) which is why I'd love to watch a real time recording of it. I have been to NYC a couple of times and the city is by far one of my fav US cities. Maybe when I come visit friends I'll try and make the journey!

Daniel K Cool, how is it. I guess since I ride the A train from Far Rockaway everyday, I don't see the appeal as those who don't live in NYC. Trust me in real time it's hell. I'm surprise this ran so smooth even for the time lapse. Normally its nothing but delays and running slow.

And no shuttle at Broad Channel?! I remember how hard I used to celebrate when I'd catch a Rockaway Park Express from Manhattan instead of Far Rockaway. I think only 4 inbound and 4 outbound during rush hour, respectively?

All Rockway bound (A) Trains run to Rockaway Park until early Septemeber due to trackwork. But under normal circumstances, you'd be correct !

All these bloggers sound like they all had typical NYC experiences! Someone mentioned NY World's Fare'65! I was there! I also remember the R-1s. And R-10 trains and also when to go to any of the Rockaways there was an additional fare just to exit the terminals including "Far Rockaway" and "Rockaway Park" terminals.
