I analyse the grow light spectrum for HPS, CMH, MH, CFL, Fluorescent tubes, reptile lights and UV LEDs to find out what are the best grow lights for UVA and UVB.
I also test grow lights for their UVA and UVB output in watts per watt consumed and compare the costs.
At the end I assess the amount of UV necessary to achieve the reported increase in potency from using UV as a supplementary light in the latter stages of flowering.

Thanks for taking the time to present the fruit of your research, a lot of people wouldn't bother, and/or would keep their knowledge for themselves.
Cheers from Italy!
Pro tip: you can watch series at Kaldrostream. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Brentley Sullivan Yup, I have been using kaldrostream for since november myself :)
@Brentley Sullivan yup, been using kaldroStream for months myself =)
@Brentley Sullivan definitely, I've been watching on kaldroStream for since november myself :D
Love the fact that you (commercially anyway) don't have a horse in the race but are still doing all this research and sharing it.
well he does www.migrolight.com/product/migro-uvb-310/
@@nxxxxzn but he didn't a year ago, it's only just come out in the last month or so.
@@nxxxxzn he went on to produce one as he decided, based on the research, that there was a gap in the market.
Oh yeah, well I’m helping feed that horse. He studies them all the makes his model competitive to those he’s testing. Look when he reveals his UVB 310nm florescent, his smirk gets big and happy getting paid. He does have cool lightweight designs that are modernize and perform.
@@TexasGrown1978 if you've done the research then you might as well monetize it if you can.
Gotta love Shane this is so important to me after 40 year's of growing fruiting plant species I always understood that my artificial light applications always needed a bit of that 400-480nm throughout the entire plants life cycle understanding the sun always putting out it's full spectrum
This is a well thought out presentation for UV - A & B focused with decent research tied together with a nice visual display. It covers some good ground and gets anyone getting started with the idea of adding UV specific spectrums to cannabis growth cycles; very important information all in one place. Well Done!
Thanks. I got around to it eventually👍
I actually added a and b high output led chips during the last 3 weeks of my cannabis flower and let me tell you. I couldn't keep enough nutrients in the plant because trichrome production was ridiculous.
I think that UVB LED:s do work but the good ones are still very expensive. The old tech UVB LED in suitable 285nm (available in 260-315nm) was only about 2mW radiant flux / LED and efficiency only about 1%. So these now cost $1-$3 for small quantity readily soldered to mini PCB (and now you can get some 5-10mW 1,5% efficient for a few dollars more). But you would need huge amount of those. So the new high power per chip tech (from about 2017) can achieve 30mW-130mW per LED. And better yet the efficiency is up to 7,5%. But the 130mW output one has short life time and even with 0,5 x power is rated max 5000h. But I think that the 130mW output was recommended operation point and actually already was that 50% from max. Anyway it does not need to be on all the time so will last many years. BUT... They cost around $80/piece... The good thing is that these 130mW output 7,5% efficient (takes 1,75W at that output) low spectrum UVB (or UVC is so wanted) will soon get cheaper. This is because of expanding volume do to the need of water disinfecting industry. Already large companies can get some 70mW output ones at $0,15/1mW.
@@iRuf12 Interesting info - thanks!
I'd like to see you revisit LED UVA/B. Have There been improvements in the last year? There sure are a lot of reptiles counting on their LEDs to stay healthy.
loving this content on spectrum. Would love to see some experiments with far red, seeing if it helps to simulate sunrise/sunset... theres all sorts of experiments to try tho... gl in future.
Bruce Bugbee of Utah State University and Apogee Instruments. They’ve been receiving funding from nasa for decades. Here is his video on the effects of far red spectrum on plants. czcams.com/video/sS7aAcacfgk/video.html
Running my uv all but two hours of my flower photoperiod....seems to really improve the quality of the affected plants...54 watts ...about 16” above canopy....definitely adding another one
Oh Canada 🇨🇦
The Major General 420 Army which UV light do you use?
Can you update us on your uv grow? Would love to get your feedback
This is like the experiments I’ve done, but professionally done. You are quite the researcher, thank you for presenting this in a way that is better articulated than I can. I shall be sharing your video with people I talk to at the garden centers and grow stores I frequent when talking about his subject.
Another excellent and useful video! My friends and I have been discussing UV supplementation and we don't much knowledge. I really appreciate the run downs and metrics!
Isn't one UV hypothesis that terpenes and canabinoids are stimulated because these compounds respond as the plants protective mechanism to increased UV levels? At the equator natural sunlight has a higher level of measurable UV light, and plants in this environment are more rich in these compounds than plants grown further away from the equator? Your analysis is so well done Shane, the grow blogs typically have comments and questions about the usefulness of UV light, so thanks. The photons are like billiard balls colliding, the energy is transferred in some of these lights to generate the UV, guess originally UV was generated using Mercury vapour in HID lamps.
So looks like the 20W CFL Reptile UVB bulbs and fixtures are the best for me as par as price, efficiency to output and modularity.
I'd go with the 24 watt california grow lights if I were you.
thanks for all your work Shane, I can say for sure that with my California lightworks UVB florescent tube turned a portion, 1/2 or so of a plant a nice purple while the other half of the plant that didn't get direct light from above did not turn as nice of a purple and it didn't seem to affect the other 2 plants in the tent, i ran the bulb for 15 on per hour of the light schedule and was only used for the last 14 days at a height of 20 inches from the canopy, as far as increasing strength i don't know as it just got chopped and is hanging
So UV is only good in small increments rather than say start at 2 hours a day and slowly work your way up?
@@isidrolara951 I was just being cautious and didn't want to give too much causing some damage
so asking 2 years later where probably all product has been thoroughly tested :) - : did it increase potency?
It’s very obvious you know a lot about lighting and I really appreciate you explaining and sharing that knowledge with us here on CZcams and Instagram. 👍🏼
Appreciate your integrity and detailed evaluation for the products ,good stuff ,keep it on
Thanks Shane. You do it again.
Got to watch again...
I have wondered for some time about the benefits of using extra UV in an indoor grow scenario. Thank you for your time in evaluating a product you don't sell. Going to try this in the not to distant future and I'll definitely let you know what my findings are. From my past reading the the glands work as sun cream for the flowers protecting them from UV damage so we'll see. Thanks again Shane
please get your hands on an agromax pure uv! after watching this video i wanted to test for myself so i have just ordered a 2ft agromax pure uv with a fixture for my 0.64m2 grow tent which usually has 3-4 5 gallon coco pots growing medical marijuana so it would probably make a difference unlike you where its illegal but you have so much more test equipment and im sure you will see resinous results in the vegetables you grow. im very excited to see this coming along more in the industry and becoming more available i just wish there was more scientific testing. Thanks as always!
I'm building C.O.B. Led lights with 10 watt 395 nM. chips. I noticed a big difference in potency when i added up to 6 of them per light.
U.V. A causes plants to produce more resins which increase the potency to a lesser degree than U.V. B , but it still has a desirable effect on potency. There should be a graduating chart for all the spectrum and its effect on resin production. U.V. B does something .......right Shane ? H.P.S. light without U.V. A or B produce a lot of resin sometimes with the right genetics and environment. What spectrum is causing that, Eh ? I really like what You are doing , keep up the good research, and works. You're an excellent Brother. Blessings, and Respect.......Seven Thunders///////
One bulb type that was not mentioned is mercury vapor bulbs sold for pet reptile sunning. I know they produce heat as well as UVA and UVB. I was thinking of trying one for a couple of hours a day.
Thanks Shane.
yea migro , like others have said thank you for the work you put. Ive tested pretty much the same light sources hunting for cheap powerful uvB. Parrots require a lot of uvb and seemed to have bigger better lights than reptiles do! Agromax UV seemed the most effective on tomatoes! the rate of progress in the LED is quick so i check every 6months or so to see if an led below uvA will ever be successfully developed.matter of time and cost i guess. Nichia do one at 365nm but its £200 for a strip of 12, approx 15w.
first time i see this kind of comparisson, well done sir, well done...
If you have high end speakers and a subwoofer while watching this, careful around 14:00 the room noise from the speakers place had a lot of low frequencies and it can really shake them up.
Thanks for the analysis. I've been using California Lightworks SolarSystem UVB 24W, but with these, I notice you can't keep them on long as they'll burn your plants, so I start out late in flowering with them, only starting out with about 15minutes per day for the first week, then gradually bringing it up for the final two weeks of growth to about 25 minutes(Time frame may vary on what is being grown). It does make a difference(with potency/aromas/flavors/looks), and with these lights it's also safe not to be under them while on.
Didn't Shane say LEDs are useless at putting out UV light? I wanna buy the SolarSystem 1100 with UV (B) light but not sure if the extra money for the UV fixtures is worth it now Shane has said that. Edit: seems the UV lights on the 1100 are fluorescent not LED so they should be decent.
@@burntoutsuperman09 From my experience, and I can only talk about the light I'm using, it seems to produce more resin productions/aromas. The UVb seems to irritate the plant, and the plant itself produces more oils to protect itself. I only use it in the last few weeks of flowering(3weeks). As for your question is it worth it, it can go both ways, is the med grow being funded for more THC, if so, it's worth it. Does the high help more with the medical condition, or create a better recreational use, if so, yes. Is it necessary for a great grow, Nope! That falls into how good the grower is, and then genetics.
I see. How do you rate the solar system light then? Are you in Europe?
@@burntoutsuperman09 The light I have(CLW-UVB 24watt) works great, no complaints, I use it in conjunction with "Electric sky 300's" from The Green Sunshine Co. But it's the same UV-b light they attach to the 1100 series. It does produce a fairly strong amount of UV-B, as my plants can only handle small doses over a given amount of time, too much and it will destroy your crop, just right, it improves everything. I'm no scientist, but I've been growing for over 20 years, and through experience, and being close to the plants you grow, you see & know how things work and effect your grow.
Sounds good dude. I've seen the electric sky 300s, look decent. I'm torn between 2 of them or 1 x 1100 solar system with UV lights attached. 1100 seems more programmable when used with controller etc, though it is more expensive.
Great info everytime on your channel, big fan from Costa Rica.
I cant help but think we are still missing something. Absolutely would not exceed sunlight levels and again thanks for tutorial you sir have a talent for educating.
*What about a generic black T4 fluorescent UV lights as only supplementary source of UV? Would a low wattage bulb be a good option? These are super cheap and common (club lights, fake money detection etc).*
Yes they are the same as the reptile fluorescent I tested but with a filter for the visible spectrum. Again 90W per square metre should be sufficient.
I think those dark purple party "UV" bulbs(black light blue-BLB), like for lighting up posters and fluorescent paint, etc are almost all UVA, thus relatively useless for reptiles or tasty buds. There was a type of circular compact fluorescent made by Sylvania they designate BL 360 that was light blue and had a pretty good UVB and UVA. I found them as Bug Zapper replacement bulbs, and later I found them closing out at a Home Depot, for like a buck or two each. I still had some of the very old compact fluorescent bases for an 8inch circular Fluorescent that worked with them, but they gradually failed and I found myself with lots of BL 360 bulbs and nothing to drive them with. I gave my last good one to my son for his Bearded Dragon.
I just did some searching and found Sylvania still makes the BL 360 or 350, in a variety of formats, compact and straight 18 and 48 inch, regular standard(T12) and possibly T5. They are basically the tanning bed bulbs, high in tanning UVB, and have that very white-bluish color. Here's some I found here, 40 watt 48 inch, 350 BL, 20 dollars each:

Another great vid. Thanks Shane
my best guess at amount of uvB required M2 was based on similar info to migro and several seasons of torturing my blooms to be around 100W M2. Plant response is heavily gene effected. its like marmite
Solacure claim there UVA:UVB is 2:1 and that they output approximately 40x the useful output compared to reptile bulbs and that only they go down to 288nm which was postulated as the response spot. Will be very interested to see what comes of all this in the future when things have moved on and all this can be evaluated historically.
Absolutely brilliant video! perfectly explained!! I am liking! subscribing!! and saving this!!! 💯❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I had an idea back in 2000 or '01b anyway it was to put my black light on a timer for at nite, when yhe grow light went off(before the led days) my thought process was the moon reflects certain uv rays and so the black light will act as moon light(during veg) and I wqs high so it seem like an awesome idea. The plant didn't really grow but did get really dark green after a week or two, my brother got mad and voides the experiment the plant grow tall and lanky but the bud turned gold like gold gliter and turned out pretty good.
Exelent unbiased highly informative content, as always....
Thank you
Ever since i sat down and did some proper researchi relised most lights across the board were lacking uv production i landed on a 135w cfl as those supposedly had a higher percentage uva uvb output
5% using your numbers
I have 6w of uv producution im wondering if the larger cfl have the same ratios uv to visible light
And i do belive it now i run it seriously get a sun burn off the bulb when the 600w of led wouldnt give me a burn in the same time
Seems time to add a bunch more
Yeah I found out about the complete lack of uv in LED's this spring (I knew but didn't care earlier).... I staryed a bunch of veggies indoors and they got ROASTED when I brought them outside. A day later all the leaves where pale and dead. So this spring I may try hardening them off with UV fluorescent bulbs and see if it speeds that process up..... Otherwise you need to do it gradually which can be a pain.
Thx dude. I have fluorescent tube and i was think if it will be good 2 support my leds, now i know.
Oh Yeah...... I think that there are peaks in resin production at both ends of the spectrum at U.V. B and at the other end at I.R. 750 or so. and declining to almost 0 at the green spectrum middle. All colors have an effect according to intensity of the light. The harsh ends of the spectrum cause plants to produce a sun screen like oil to block their damaging effects to leaf tissue. see.......
I do a mix of Platinum Led p600 and Spectrum King 602, the mix seems to work better than each alone, works well
platinum led are crap
@@VADORT I disagree
Awesome yet so much options for otpimal buds
What about induction grow lights?
can you do a best light for a 4x4 tent video ? best for value , cheapest , most expensive , etc ? I really loved the one you did on the small lights ( 100 / 150 watt) I'm hoping for the 480 watt range approximately . thank you so much for what you do .
... awesome video ( as usual) by the way :)
Where can I find the 1 ft pure UV bulbs like the one in the video you recommend?
Another great video Shane! I was wondering about a few things. Do you know how they figured out the increase in potency in 1986? I thought that there were no machines to test these levels, as many 90's breeders came to the conclusion that % of THC could never be over 25%(Shantibaba?), and I believe that was by figuring out/estimated by vegetable matter vs. essential oil/trichome content/weight.. I'll have to watch/re-watch the video that's referenced by you from earlier! Also, no 10,000K MH,. which are made for ripening the last 2-3wks of flowering? I believe they're are several brands! I use a DE-CMH w/8-50W COB's(2-50W COB's on a 1M rail, fully adjustable, Citizen-1414-048(?), Last generations COB's), like Migro minus your Excellent Craftsmanship! And always top of the line, newest generation Luminous COB's! I love my CMH for quality, though not the most efficient lighting. Adding 400W of COB's around the edges of my 5'x5' tent, giving a more even light canopy, eliminating any shade, and really supercharging the intensity! And no better COB's available than MIGRO!!! Much more intensity on plants then Quantum Boards, I believe, probably because of the focused output of the 90° lens! ALWAYS THE BEST. MIGRO!! 10,000K MH finishing lamps, supposedly (very interesting, and no real testing?). Another Rambling comment.. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOU DO SHANE!!!
Waveform light has uv 365 nm led strips and uvc 270 nm led strip. And review of those would be 👍
Please put some shades on mate.
2 1/2 years later, has any UVB leds made the "useful" list?
this is REALLY GOOD SHITE !!!!! i'm about to try.... i've seen recommendations that the duration should be solid, like what Shane is saying 6hrs per day, then let the plants recover.... i'm thinking of running a photocell timer, start low and build up to X minutes per hour, i dunno..... I DO KNOW that 2 of the agromax grow/uv bulbs will burn pretty bad in 3 days constant just before flower, so the moral of this story is discretion is prolly the better part of valor.......
GREAT JOB ! great infos ! thank you a usual ! the light master
im wondering if the few UV leds on something like the bavagreen lights would pose a risk. the lights seem bright bot not sure if that is at all related to the UV output and if its dangerous for eyes?
Awesome. 👍
Do you know how high up from the canopy the lights should be hung?
I've hung the 2 bulb 2ft uvb lights at about 12 inches above tops of my plants and burnt them. I put it about 36 inches above a bunch of clones from the same plants. The clones were way way frostier and not burnt. It probably depends on how powerful your uv bulbs are. Its hard to gage when you cannot see it. I'm thinking they are best ran on the second half of the day, so the second 6 hour section in evening. Turn the uvbs on for 2 hours off 2 on 2 off 2 on 2. Total daily run time would be 6 hours a day but broken up on the last 3 or even 4 weeks
HLG has an LED grow light (HLG 30 uva supplement) for $149.00. It contains 385nm and 385nm diodes. Perhaps you could do a review on this light. Given that they are such a reputable light manufacturer... perhaps this is the led light we have been looking for.
I use UV and UVA for bugs.. spider mites etc... Am I wrong to be using it for this purpose..this is the only reason I use UV and UVA to keep away the bugs.. which is why..when I have used led.. with no uv or uva I get bugs like spider mites..and destroys my legal Cannabis ?
Shane..what have you read about bugs.. would love a experiment of bugs and uv and uva and see if it really deals with the bugs.
Your awesome bro... Cheers.. awesome education you provide .
Awesome content Shane congrats, could you talk about plastic reflector's for cob like Angelina, If are better with ou without them ?
I own a Timber grow light and anything I've been told is do not run reflectors. The only reason you would need them is if you had your lights very high up in a greenhouse. Otherwise, your just going to heat up your cobs more and loose a bit of light spread which is needed
Спасибо, очень интересно!
Excellent info, just what I was looking for in terms of how many UV watts per sq M.
*HELLO MIGRO!, I got: 50w REPTILE LIGHT UVB 10.0 - Any recommendation for this light ? Watts per m2 / distance from plants / how many hours a day ? Im a sub, help me please :(*
Are these good for plants?
If I understand correctly it’s harmful, however, the plant will produce “sunscreen” to protect itself and pack on smells, taste and potency
Great tutorial, thanks
Have you ever put this measurement tech into checking uv on a 10k lec? Pondering on mix and matching during grow 3 different cmh/lec bulbs. 10K looks like it might be deep in uv? Did I miss your video on that?? THank you.
I’ll test now I just need a way to test my thc levels so I can try with and with out UV
Thank you
So, in addition to a quantum board LED, it seems adding in some eye hortilux fluorescent bulbs would be a good idea. Am I on track with that thinking?
Great channel Shane!
What do you think of the nukehead jigga watt lights? Cheers.
Excellent fucking work!!! Will experiment soon!
Why haven't any companies invented a mercury-potassium argon HID? Also I've heard of some co. Putting iron or nickel in their bulbs for enhanced uv spectrum
Thanks Shane! So awesome to finally have some good info on uvb. So exactly which uvb bulb should we be getting? In your opinion you said the 90 watt uvb fluorescent for 6 hours a day.. which one exactly is that one
Rey Ortiz I heard a expert say pulse on for 6 skip a day then back on as the plant will block the uv if left on the whole time
Save your money
So a 5’ x 5’ tent would need four 4’ 54w fluorescent lights to obtain something close to this?
thank you!
What about 50 watt halogen bulbs with the glass taken off?
What about this, im growing plants indoor for my outdoor garden like peppers tomato etc if i use (also) uv light to grow my plants (when it is to cold outside). Wil it be better for the plants when i put the plants outdoors in sunlight?
I wish I could hit the like button twice for this vid. 😎cat 4 sunglasses
Thanks for all the testing! In a future video can you also include mercury vapor bulbs (old garage fixtures, etc.)? It would seem they would be much more effective!
Nice vid champ
just a question what is the spectrum of the fluorescence light you tested ?
I used to have a panther chameleon and had a few mercury uvb bulbs still in storage so I put em in my grow. Mercury vapor 75 watts. Curious to see any difference

how far would you place a 25 watt uvb light from plants?
Thank you, I was just about to purchase uv florescent bulbs to go with my migro-200. Glad you did this because I was not going to buy enough. Question how high do you hang these things?
I would make a simple reflector with mylar lining and hang about 30cm above the canopy

joegrows420 good for vegging just make sure you match the light to the space
elliott debell I went with the spider farmer sf1000 , absolutely no regrets so far , my newly transplanted clones have taken of the past week , nice tight node structure , all I gotta do is play around with the distance to see how close I can get it to the canopy , currently at 18” from the top of the plants ✌️

Hi Shane, I can't afford LED yet. I wanted to ask which lights are best for growing crops indoors, like Pak Choi and lettuce Etc. I have the option of HPS, metal halide and dual Spectrum from sunmaster, all 400w. Which one should I go for? Thank you!
you could always diy your fixture you would need slightly less than 200W to replace 400W HPS ledgardener.com/diy-led-strip-build-designs-samsung-bridgelux/ this page has all parts listed needed for a diy fixture the price for a watt is roughly 1$ or even less. besides that you get more light for your money diy and its really easy this site got you covered. lettuce is a low dli plant so you wont need much
Ультрафиолет нужен для THC или CBD?
LEDs don't contain any mercury. The others do. Even if small amounts, it should be a consideration.
