    I analyse the grow light spectrum for HPS, CMH, MH, CFL, Fluorescent tubes, reptile lights and UV LEDs to find out what are the best grow lights for UVA and UVB.
    I also test grow lights for their UVA and UVB output in watts per watt consumed and compare the costs.
    At the end I assess the amount of UV necessary to achieve the reported increase in potency from using UV as a supplementary light in the latter stages of flowering.

      I think that UVB LED:s do work but the good ones are still very expensive. The old tech UVB LED in suitable 285nm (available in 260-315nm) was only about 2mW radiant flux / LED and efficiency only about 1%. So these now cost $1-$3 for small quantity readily soldered to mini PCB (and now you can get some 5-10mW 1,5% efficient for a few dollars more). But you would need huge amount of those. So the new high power per chip tech (from about 2017) can achieve 30mW-130mW per LED. And better yet the efficiency is up to 7,5%. But the 130mW output one has short life time and even with 0,5 x power is rated max 5000h. But I think that the 130mW output was recommended operation point and actually already was that 50% from max. Anyway it does not need to be on all the time so will last many years. BUT... They cost around $80/piece... The good thing is that these 130mW output 7,5% efficient (takes 1,75W at that output) low spectrum UVB (or UVC is so wanted) will soon get cheaper. This is because of expanding volume do to the need of water disinfecting industry. Already large companies can get some 70mW output ones at $0,15/1mW.

    Isn't one UV hypothesis that terpenes and canabinoids are stimulated because these compounds respond as the plants protective mechanism to increased UV levels? At the equator natural sunlight has a higher level of measurable UV light, and plants in this environment are more rich in these compounds than plants grown further away from the equator? Your analysis is so well done Shane, the grow blogs typically have comments and questions about the usefulness of UV light, so thanks. The photons are like billiard balls colliding, the energy is transferred in some of these lights to generate the UV, guess originally UV was generated using Mercury vapour in HID lamps.

    U.V. A causes plants to produce more resins which increase the potency to a lesser degree than U.V. B , but it still has a desirable effect on potency. There should be a graduating chart for all the spectrum and its effect on resin production. U.V. B does something .......right Shane ? H.P.S. light without U.V. Thanks for the analysis. I've been using California Lightworks SolarSystem UVB 24W, but with these, I notice you can't keep them on long as they'll burn your plants, so I start out late in flowering with them, only starting out with about 15minutes per day for the first week, then gradually bringing it up for the final two weeks of growth to about 25 minutes(Time frame may vary on what is being grown). It does make a difference(with potency/aromas/flavors/looks), and with these lights it's also safe not to be under them while on.

      Didn't Shane say LEDs are useless at putting out UV light? I wanna buy the SolarSystem 1100 with UV (B) light but not sure if the extra money for the UV fixtures is worth it now Shane has said that. Edit: seems the UV lights on the 1100 are fluorescent not LED so they should be decent.

    • @gstar4221
      @gstar4221 Před 5 lety

      @@burntoutsuperman09 From my experience, and I can only talk about the light I'm using, it seems to produce more resin productions/aromas. The UVb seems to irritate the plant, and the plant itself produces more oils to protect itself. I only use it in the last few weeks of flowering(3weeks). As for your question is it worth it, it can go both ways, is the med grow being funded for more THC, if so, it's worth it. Does the high help more with the medical condition, or create a better recreational use, if so, yes. Is it necessary for a great grow, Nope! That falls into how good the grower is, and then genetics.

But it's the same UV-b light they attach to the 1100 series. It does produce a fairly strong amount of UV-B, as my plants can only handle small doses over a given amount of time, too much and it will destroy your crop, just right, it improves everything. I'm no scientist, but I've been growing for over 20 years, and through experience, and being close to the plants you grow, you see & know how things work and effect your grow.

      I think those dark purple party "UV" bulbs(black light blue-BLB), like for lighting up posters and fluorescent paint, etc are almost all UVA, thus relatively useless for reptiles or tasty buds. There was a type of circular compact fluorescent made by Sylvania they designate BL 360 that was light blue and had a pretty good UVB and UVA. I found them as Bug Zapper replacement bulbs, and later I found them closing out at a Home Depot, for like a buck or two each. I still had some of the very old compact fluorescent bases for an 8inch circular Fluorescent that worked with them, but they gradually failed and I found myself with lots of BL 360 bulbs and nothing to drive them with. I gave my last good one to my son for his Bearded Dragon.
      I just did some searching and found Sylvania still makes the BL 360 or 350, in a variety of formats, compact and straight 18 and 48 inch, regular standard(T12) and possibly T5. They are basically the tanning bed bulbs, high in tanning UVB, and have that very white-bluish color. Here's some I found here, 40 watt 48 inch, 350 BL, 20 dollars each:

B and at the other end at I.R. 750 or so. and declining to almost 0 at the green spectrum middle. All colors have an effect according to intensity of the light. The harsh ends of the spectrum cause plants to produce a sun screen like oil to block their damaging effects to leaf tissue. see.......

    Another great video Shane! I was wondering about a few things. Do you know how they figured out the increase in potency in 1986? I thought that there were no machines to test these levels, as many 90's breeders came to the conclusion that % of THC could never be over 25%(Shantibaba?), and I believe that was by figuring out/estimated by vegetable matter vs. essential oil/trichome content/weight.. I'll have to watch/re-watch the video that's referenced by you from earlier! Also, no 10,000K MH,. which are made for ripening the last 2-3wks of flowering? I believe they're are several brands! I use a DE-CMH w/8-50W COB's(2-50W COB's on a 1M rail, fully adjustable, Citizen-1414-048(?), Last generations COB's), like Migro minus your Excellent Craftsmanship! And always top of the line, newest generation Luminous COB's! I love my CMH for quality, though not the most efficient lighting. Adding 400W of COB's around the edges of my 5'x5' tent, giving a more even light canopy, eliminating any shade, and really supercharging the intensity! And no better COB's available than MIGRO!!! Much more intensity on plants then Quantum Boards, I believe, probably because of the focused output of the 90° lens! ALWAYS THE BEST. MIGRO!! 10,000K MH finishing lamps, supposedly (very interesting, and no real testing?). Another Rambling comment.. THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOU DO SHANE!!!

The clones were way way frostier and not burnt. It probably depends on how powerful your uv bulbs are. Its hard to gage when you cannot see it. I'm thinking they are best ran on the second half of the day, so the second 6 hour section in evening. Turn the uvbs on for 2 hours off 2 on 2 off 2 on 2. Total daily run time would be 6 hours a day but broken up on the last 3 or even 4 weeks

    I use UV and UVA for bugs.. spider mites etc... Am I wrong to be using it for this purpose..this is the only reason I use UV and UVA to keep away the bugs.. which is why..when I have used led.. with no uv or uva I get bugs like spider mites..and destroys my legal Cannabis ?
    Shane..what have you read about bugs.. would love a experiment of bugs and uv and uva and see if it really deals with the bugs.
    Your awesome bro... Cheers.. awesome education you provide .

      I own a Timber grow light and anything I've been told is do not run reflectors. The only reason you would need them is if you had your lights very high up in a greenhouse. Otherwise, your just going to heat up your cobs more and loose a bit of light spread which is needed

    Hi Shane, I can't afford LED yet. I wanted to ask which lights are best for growing crops indoors, like Pak Choi and lettuce Etc. I have the option of HPS, metal halide and dual Spectrum from sunmaster, all 400w. Which one should I go for? Thank you!

    • @Humbulla93
      @Humbulla93 Před 4 lety

      you could always diy your fixture you would need slightly less than 200W to replace 400W HPS ledgardener.com/diy-led-strip-build-designs-samsung-bridgelux/ this page has all parts listed needed for a diy fixture the price for a watt is roughly 1$ or even less. besides that you get more light for your money diy and its really easy this site got you covered. lettuce is a low dli plant so you wont need much
