Dobinsons Shock Bushings and Washers Orientation

  • This is one of the most commonly asked questions, but people don't realize they pretty much just need to match up how the OE shocks were installed and copy that onto the new shocks. This isn't just for Dobinsons struts and shocks, this is almost the same across all brands like OME Old Man Emu, Bilstein, Fox, KYB, Monroe, etc. Anyone that uses the factory mounts and regular rubber or polyurethane bushings pretty much follows the techniques shown in this video.
Sometimes some shocks come with additional washers and bushings and those are there because the shocks may fit different sized frame mounts, so if your shocks came with different sized bushings and locating washers, match up the size that fits the shock shaft and the hole size in the frame mount so that it's a proper fit when it's all installed. You do not want the shock shaft to be loose or off center and rub against the frame mount as that will cause metal on metal contact and cause squeaking or squealing and drive you nuts. That's how we know the orientation wasn't done right usually, as there's no way for the shocks to make noise when these are properly installed and centered in the mount correctly.
    This technique is used on a Lexus GX470 and GX460, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota 4Runner 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Gen, Toyota Land Cruiser 60 70 80 100 200 300 Series, Toyota Tacoma 1st 2nd 3rd Gen, Toyota Tundra 1st 2nd 3rd Gen, Toyota Sequoia 1st and 2nd Gen and many other vehicles out there.
This is intended as informational help and not necessarily the correct way for your shocks to go together.

Hey Mike, great video. I have a 5th gen 4runner and I have a squeaking sound at low speeds coming from right rear shock. Upon checking I noticed the metal washer that rests on the frame looks like it wasn't well installed, it makes an annoying squeak. I tried tightening the bolt today and noticed the whole shock rotated a bit when trying to tighten the bolt. Should I be concerned? Should I have it checked asap? Thanks.

Make sure the washers and bushings are centered. Hold the shock body when tightening the nut or put a wrench or Allen key on the top of the stud to hold it from rotating.

I got one and the front didn't come with a new plastic bushing. I found at autozone some that will fit read but not front. Can I use the rear one on front? They fit snug but fit. Thanks!

They should work as long as the inner hole size matches up and you have the right washers

@@ExitOffroad I used them and worked fine. But I'm honestly bummed I just got the one side done used 2887 springs and it only gave me a half inch lift. Idk why I did everything needed. Could going to get them aligned solve this and thanks so much for answering

To tighten up against the shock shaft and the washers so the shock doesn't spin or get loose
