  • In this video I travel to the Loup of Fintry, a 94ft waterfall to the north of Glasgow to make the most of a dull, overcast day... then the sun came out and changed all my plans!

Gorgeous waterfall up there. Caught some drone footage when I first got my drone but been meaning to go back up and do it better. Also love waterfall photography too though. Creates an issue when me and the mrs go out for walks as she's away wandering with her telephoto, looking for wildlife, while I'm setting up tripods and messing about with settings. Always feel I'm holding her back haha

Thanks! Yeah, its a great waterfall. I tried to return a month or so ago but it was really busy and kids were splashing around in the water above the falls. Really need to get back soon!
I know what you mean about feeling like you're holding people up. I'm exactly the same - which is probably why I do most of these videos on my own!

Thanks Anne! I had planned to do another shoot at Campsie Glen after this but the weather wasn't suitable so look out for that in the future! :)

One waterfall , but with all your different perspectives on it. Top notch stuff Sir.

Thank you! I had wanted to get across to the other side but when the sun came out I had to cancel that plan as it would have involved shooting straight into the sun. Maybe one for next time!

    Great video John
Given the conditions my preference is your intimate images of the the waterfall....🙂👍

Thanks Brian! Yeh the weather turned pretty quickly. I went out with an idea for a video but the conditions changed quickly that nothing much went to plan once the sun came out!

Great composition. I liked your concentration on the 3 rocks that provided different water dispersion and contrast....I might have tried a tight pano with different focus points...just an idea, Very nice work.

Thanks Fred! I took way too many shots of those rocks, including a 3 shot pano but I needed to cut some stuff from the video or it would have been twice the length!

Fintry Loup is a difficult one to shoot as you're limited to where you can shoot from (unless you're adventurous). Early winter sunset is the better option for the long shot, the advantage of having a greater flow of water with less foliage getting in the way and enough light hitting the falls. Catching a good sunset in the autumn for the 'standard' shot next to the falls down the strath is also a good option if you're lucky. Also less tourists and photogs 😊

I had planned to cross the river and shoot from the other side but the sudden appearance of the sun scuppered that idea as i'd have been shooting directly into the sun. Might try again later in the year

You managed to get quite a few different views of the falls. John, I will need to have another go myself, the last time a few years ago, I headed with my son and they had the road closed for resurfacing.

Thanks Douglas! I think the last time I was there was around that time too! Thinking of heading back again for a sunset soon. I've never been for sunrise, have you been around that time?

Another relaxing viewing; like your descriptions of camera settings for each image. Colours and focus spot on. Exposure blending ~ yup😮
    And no CPL¿
Really pushing at 24, good to see. Have you considered using a drone as part of your photography ?

    • @JohnMcKennaPhotography
      @JohnMcKennaPhotography  Před rokem +1

thanks! No, I didn't use any filters, I had toyed with the idea of using a CPL to extend the shutter speeds but I found I could get the effect I wanted using aperture and shutter speed alone. Also, I wanted to capture those highlights in the water droplets and I find a polarizer can sometimes remove those.

I love your work John…you seem to have an eye for composition I really wish I had. If I had a criticism, it would be that I’d pull back on the post processing, just a little, especially on those skies! That said, you get shots I miss, and that’s a skill; you do deserve more exposure on you tube…take note shitty CZcams algorithm. 😊Good luck.
