It was shot in the summer of 1989.
Technically it was. Just as 1970 was still the 1960s. Think about it.
Culturally the 1980s were 1984 through 1992 as 1981-83 were more like the '70s than they were the '80s. The 1990s were marked by suckage mixed with lameitude which persists to this day.

Man, I live in Alabama and I recently found out that the dad in this movie is a dentist in the city I work in! I’ve got to go get him to sign my copy of Troll 2 and check my plaque build up.
I remember MST3K riffed this movie and that was one of their factoids.

That’s interesting because I’ve never seen Troll 2 but the dad looks familiar so pretty sure he’s been in other stuff. Interesting that he quit acting to do dentistry. Certainly a more reliable career
Yeah, i live in Huntsville, but my buddy from my home in the Wiregrass met him at a festival out at Waverly after his band's set. Said he was a super nice guy.
I was _that_ person who saw this movie at age 5 and was legitimately traumatized by it.
I woke up in the middle of the night and my dad was watching this, and because it was such a stupid horror movie he didn't think to take it off, and I wasn't scared by it at all, more confused. Then that Italian horror "fuck you" ending blindsides the viewer and I was terrified of being eaten in the shower, or waking up to find my entire family gone for years.
haha same here, my dad and his friend were watching it and laughing but as a kid, maybe 7 years old, it totally freaked me out

The mother always terrified me in this movie when I was wee. Her facial expressions/or lack there of, while she delivers her lines (with zero human characteristics) led me to believe that she was imagining what the head of whoever she was conversing with would like like on a stick. Proper serial killer vibes.
Those are just the ones that give themselves away. It's the charmers like Bundy you have to learn to detect.
The documentary about the movie showed that the actress playing the mom was actually seriously mentally ill

I re-enact that dance scene every night before bed. Took a lot of practice.
I love the fact one of the many reasons this film is so wacky is the language barrier between the people that made it.
I just read the Wiki on this film. I guess the entire film crew was Italian while the actors were inexperienced Americans. Now it all makes sense.

I love trolls 2. The language barrier adds so much explanation as to the awkwardness of the script. It's even funnier that they didn't even bother to have an English speaking person review & Dr the script lol

Hey Mark, from Ned in Spain. I love hilariously bad movies and this was a stellar example. Your breakdown and comments were great. One thing I saw in the film credits made me do a double take. The costume designer was the one and only Laura Gemser, a beautiful half Indonesian and Dutch model who was in a pile of Euro Trash movies including about 15 or 20 " Emmanuel" films and in lots of Men's magazines, mostly in Italy. It makes sense that she would be known to the producer and writer of this ep-ick. Take care and love your channel.

This is exactly the kind of movie I would end up watching at 2 AM as a kid, when everybody else was asleep, and I was home sick from the flu. xD Such memories!

@@GODCONVOYPRIME My aunt and late uncle are vegetarian. I never saw them turning people into vegetables to eat them, but that COULD be because auntie's a very good cook and can make things that taste better than people-turned-into-plant-goop.
Maybe that's all it takes for Golbins to be good people. Just teach them how to cook the foods they already have, and they won't eat people.
The screenwriter wrote the film solely as a way to get back at her friends for turning vegetarian. Apparently Italians are really weird about vegetarianism, since it's come up in quite a few movies from there.
That Bill Cosby movie “Leonard: Part 6” comes close as well
The dialogue is pretty much what Italian giallo films sound like, but in English. They needed an American writer to make it sound less insane and a dialogue/acting coach.This is what you get when the crew speaks one language and the cast speaks another and there is only basic translation.
Laura Gemser (best know as Black Emmanuelle) was the costume designer for Troll 2 and the only person on set who spoke both Italian and English. It also didn't help that director Claudio Fragasso has an ego large enough to make Trump's look like a fruit fly in comparison. Several of the actors said they went to Fragasso (with Gemser as translator) and asked to tweak the dialogue to make it more American and his answer was "I know what American teenagers sound like!"

Yeah, I'm not even really into comic books but I was thinking how for back then, that is actually one of the better Joker depictions. Certainly a more mature/darker version than the Joker from the animated series.

So, the Italian director hated Vegetarian/Vegans - and made a horror movie that paints them as murderous, ironic 'goblins' - but the movie is called Troll 2 so it could piggyback off the original Troll movie?
And then from pre-production to movie wrap, he just decided to make the greatest bad movie ever made?
We need more anti-vegan films.
apparently he didn't intend for it to be that way but quickly caught on that people only loved it for how bad it was. the documentary is worth a watch. I mean, if you make something out of a spiteful idea as dumb as "my friends vegetarian now, me mad," there's a decent chance everything else that involves filmmaking becomes a second thought

Him pausing time to pee on his families food is actually the most realistic depiction of a child's use of time-pausing in a story that i've ever seen.
His character motivation made perfect sense.
Usually when they throw that trope in the kid just turns people's shirts inside out or pulls people's pants down around their ankles etc.
The scene kinda reminds me of "Click" with Adam Sandler but it makes even more sense since this character is an actual child.
so...they kinda got one thing inside this train wreck to be mediocre instead of bad. It's not even consistently bad...it's like a Turducken of failure. Amazing.

There are plenty of just plain bad movies out there but something like Troll2 truly defines 'camp value': a show so bad that it is actually good.
Troll 2 is king. I hope this means you may redo those bad superhero movies one day as well! Those are some of my favorites from the old days. And the Twilight series
I don't know. For me, it is and will probably always be the "STAR WARS Holiday Special".
Because not only can you watch the utter disbelief in the face of the person you're watching it with. If you chose your company wisely, you picked a good-hearted Star Wars fan. And then you can see not only shock, but true, deeply felt pain as well. So beautiful.

Yeah, a lot of people try to do what Mark's doing but fail. I think the deadpan Canadian sarcasm and cynicism wins out.
I love Troll 2. I watched it while in prison (pharmacy burglarys) and MST3K when possible. Kept me sane and in good spirits until i was released 5 years later. Fun fact, i had over 10 hardened criminals watching MST3K 😅 they thought i was crazy until they watched it and loved it.

Right around the time TROLL 2 came out, Claudio Fragasso turned his career around and was nominated for a bunch of Italian Oscars just a few years later. Guess the movie about the vegetarian goblins was a wake up call for him and his career.

Call me crazy but if there is a movie that's been made with bad acting, a terrible storyline and very low budget it most likely will be in my movie collection.

When I was 8, I was at a sleepover. We rented this movie, and it actually scared us. It is such a surprise years later as an adult to see it was...well...
I saw this growing up in the early 90s, was odd, slightly terrifying, and so bonkers. Love it!
It's the perfect movie title. The studio Trolled us into thinking this was a movie about trolls.
The plot hasn´t got a single hole. Because we all know how difficult is to find plants to eat in this planet, to begin with.
I remember seeing this on HBO when we first got cable in the early nineties. I remember watching the whole movie multiple times and never really finding it to be anything special, especially at 9 yrs old. Completely forgot about it until randomly coming across the documentary. Instantly had to buy it. Like Beetlejuice says, it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it. Sharing this movie with someone who hasn't seen it is a real treat.
Everytime I watch Troll 2, i get a weird craving for popcorn...

Reading three funny tweets about the Star Wars Holiday Special will give you as much enjoyment as actually watching the goddamn thing.
But no amount of snarky internet reviews of Troll 2 can substitute for actually watching it.
Yeah it's the classic case of "so bad it's fun to watch" versus "so bad I feel a lifelong sense of regret at having watched it."
I think "YOU CANT PISS ON HOSPITALITY! I WONT ALLOW IT!" has became my new favourite line of any movie ever. Along with "are you still smoking pot Holly?"
