Last year a I created a support system from cattle-wire to keep the foliage upright. This works brilliantly however I felt I could improve on it.

Funnily enough, I had already done this with bamboo canes and jute string. It is actually very effective.

Taking yer advice on the first Earlies was a blessing indeed, a layer at the bottom level and a layer on the upper level, works a Treat just harvested my first Raised bed of Maris Bards today, 6.4kg of perfect beautiful big babay tatties. Funny I came across this video today.
I had a lot of wind the past few days and my gardens took a beating .
The potatoes are in a narrow raised bed shielded by the back of my house but they still get beat up with the mountain winds up here in N. Georgia.
I like this idea and I’ve been meaning to build something out of some weathered 2x2’s I recycled from an old cabin I restored and you just gave me my marching orders….lol.
Get it sorted before the wind knocks them for good, once its built you have it for next year too

Thank you for your book on composting. I thought I knew how to compost, but since reading your book, I realize that there were so many gaps in my knowledge. It's a must-have for every gardening library. This year I have experimented with growing potatoes in wood chip and so far it seems to be working, but the proof will be at harvest time. Thanks Tony. I’ve followed all your tips his year including erecting a framework above the containers. I’ve also experimented leaving five pots without support. The difference is exactly as you’ve demonstrated, the containers I left without support have been battered to bits, the rest look great. Thanks for the reminder to pull the flower heads off I forgot that.

Nice idea Tony. My Kondor here are doing well so far. You gave me the idea to grow them and I am eagerly awaiting the harvest. I am growing a few other varieties as well including Fortyfold, a heritage variety from the 1800s so we shall see how they all stack up. Great video.

great video and never knew that about the flowers as always thought that was the indication they were reading to harvest! I saw another comment and notice your feedback was to wait until foliage goes yellow (50%).
Yes Lisa, if the plants are still green they are still putting energy into the tubers.
Have been doing this for 3yrs , I fasten the side supports to the up rights with cable ties so I can raise the side supports up as the potatoes grow

This seems like a great improvement over the wire system you had before. It also seems like I could still set this up even though the plants are about a foot and a half tall. I think we have some spare wood we might be able to use.

I’m following your method of planting in pots for the first time. My potatoes are thriving and growing like gangbusters. Wish I’d send this before because they are flopping all over the place. Next time I’ll support them. Did not know I should pull off flowers so I’ll do that. Love your videos. Thanks!

I have done something similar with bamboo canes. With uprights and weaving more of them in and out, if the haulms get bigger than expected just add more. I also use old hoses folk were throwing out with small holes drilled in them to water when nessarey.

I will try your method for my potatoes in containers and corn in the ground this year. I've had to individually stake my corn in the past to pick them up from the wind.

I didn’t add a support system and I am seeing exactly what you’re talking about. I’ll have to find some scrap lumber to make some supports before they become too bad. I have a bit of yellowing down deep in the center. I check for moisture as you suggest but I’m unsure what’s causing this.

If they are 1st or 2nd earlies its possible this is old age and they are coming ready to harvest. when the plants turn 50% yellow then cut the tops
@@simplifygardening : They are Russets and Kennebec White. The Yukon Gold don’t show this yellowing and we’re planted a few weeks after the previous. Thank you Tony!
Nice! I'm going to built one of these for my container potatoes next season. I find it a bit amusing that although you use (I assume) the metric system there, you referred to the lumber you used as "2 x 1", the same as I would call it here in the U.S. (although it would only really measure 1-1/2" x 3/4")

Three layer of netting that you lift all three in one go, after the haulms have grown more you lift two, an the third last to be lifted. I use this method for flowers that I cut, and this year for spuds as well.

I bought some of the ikea bags you mentioned before and planted some kennebec potatoes. They were planted over 8 weeks ago but the plants are not dying back and they should be by now (this variety takes 7-8 wks). Not sure where to go from here..... they’re continually putting out more green growth as well 😳
My 2 small rows in the garden and just a few in buckets wouldn't justify a wood frame... and I had no idea the potato plant grows that high. My first attempt was stunted.
For my corn, I bought some electric fence posts that have loops along the post for attaching wire. I just run string through them at multiple levels in a criss cross pattern to hold up the corn at different stages, since it's so windy here. Now I can do the same for my potatoes!
Yeah this is only if your doing your whole crop in containers
We have powerful winds here in Canberra but my spud stems are about an inch and a half in diameter and the pots are right next to each other so they don't seem to suffer from the strong blows, they get to about four foot. Another thing I've noticed lately is that they are surviving frost with with an animal protection net. These we put on to stop possums chewing off the leaves. They are a very fine net. I used to put blankets on for the frost but just leave the net on for the life of the plant. I grow on a continuous basis to provide for us and we are now eight months into self sufficiency in spuds. This is even with about thirty days on frost. They say spuds don't like heat but it doesn't seem to be the case here. I grow any variety I can get but the Sebago are a easy grow and very prolific and the Dutch Cream are the wife's favourite for taste. I abandoned store bought compost a while ago and save all kitchen waste for it. I'm experimenting now with growing in aged Chicken, sheep and cow manure mixed with composted kitchen waste. Do post more on spuds as it comes up. Cheers.
Yeah I know the winds in Canberra. I stayed there for a few years back in 93 until 95. a beautiful place. only thing that puzzled me was the pubs shutting at 9pm lol
I have recently found your helpful website, You mentioned on one of your programs on growing potatoes in containers about our needing mulch and wood chip, I just can’t find which one it was on! Where did you say to look for wood chip? I am a fairly new gardener! Thank you Margy
I'm building a similar setup out of 3/4" PVC pipe but I'm sure your wood version is stronger. 👍
2.4 Metre long plasterboard pallet slats are a nice width at 70mm wide, plus they are free if you know somebody at a builders merchants or a contractor.
I don't bother planting my spuds in open ground anymore as a clump of containers takes up less space and is much easier to throw a fleece over.

Hi Tony, thanks for all your work. I am wondering if this support system was preceded by an experiment to see if flopping foliage really reduces harvest. Could the spreading just be the plant's way of capturing more sunlight? Is the trellis for improved harvest or the convenience of the grower?

Was wondering on whether you could trial changing the containers that you use.. lets go supersize and try the Strata 90L Heavy Duty Garden Bin, would they work if you just keep topping up, or if your doing salads like Charlotte that you put multi layers of seed potatoes.. I even thought could you make like a hole on the side of the bin for the first level of seed potatoes to grow through and you train it up the side of the tall container. Would love your input.
Do you think that the Florida weave would work for potatoes?
My potatoes have been battered so badly by wind and small children. If we get any viable potatoes it will be a miracle. Great video.
Get some form of support up for next year, look out for some free batten in skips where someone is having a new roof if you cant buy it

This looks like a great idea. Unfortunately, my 5 potato pots are sprinkled throughout my garden around my 3 4'x8' beds wherever I could find space. Also, tiny black flea beetles are all over them this year (as wel as a bunch of other plants) and seriously eating the leaves. Any suggestions for controlling them other than pulling out the SEVIN bug killer?
I am after making something like this myself. What height did you build the structure and did you also put a timber down the middle to make it into a lattice or keep it as a ‘ladder’ style structure.
Yep, looks nice and your plants are doing great. So the real question is: Are you getting bigger harvests by doing this? Do the containers that have no support have the same yields? If you are putting in the expense and effort then there should be a significant payback at harvest time to justify it.
I use 30ltr tree pots like yours. I put a 4ft bamboo in the centre and then tie string at three different levels around the plant to the bamboo. Don’t forget: never put a stick into the ground without a plastic top, coke can or such like on the bamboo top. If you get a bamboo in your eye you won’t rub it better 👻
Yes this works well if your growing a few containers. but on the scale, I am there would be way to much work doing that each year
How many rows have you planted per support system and how far Appart please?
Hi Tony, I tried containers for the first time this year but I’ve ended up with a lot of really tiny potatoes about 1cm wide. There are some larger ones but quite a lot of smaller ones. Is that normal? What can I do to improve the size of the potatoes in the containers I have left?
How often would you recommend to water buckets of potatoes?
If you used PVC instead of timber, couldn't the trellis BE the drip irrigation system as well? Great idea for a trellis above the potatoes, it makes me wish I would have grown potatoes in buckets this year.

I started watching you potatoes in 30l containers I went to my garden centre and got some first potatoes and thought I would go back in a few weeks and get some seconds then a few weeks later to get some main crop.
But of course, when I went back they told me I should have gotten all three at the same time.
But all was not a total loss I went into Aldi and they had some Scottish reds that were on the change so I got some and they are now in the 30l containers though they will be a bit later than they would have been?
I only tell you as I mist that not just on your site as I looked a few sites?
So if I did maybe others will as well, I know I must seem a bit slow but I bet I am not the only one. lol

When you are taking the flower heads off,is this essential?do I need to do it with first and second earlies?I've never seen that done before
It is not essential, but it will mean that energy is used by the plant to form flowers and seed, the plant stops putting that energy into the tubers so yield will be less than if you removed them

Can you use garden netting to cover your potato plants? This is my first time growing potatoes in containers, and they look great so far. However, I have a serious deer problem, and they eat everything. Right now, I have a fishing line "fence" around my veggies to deter the deer and it also helps support the plants. I wanted to add some netting to the plants for an extra layer of deer protection.
Yes you can but it would need to be frames above the plants you could not rest it on the plants

I'm miles behind you but my plants are growing on the sunny side of my place - an experimental series of 24 colorful (red, yellow, blue, violet) varieties of potatoes, what will come out of it? In 60 and 40 liter mortarbuckets with holes, car tires, cardboard box, and in the ground. And with cattle grid support bowing and bellying everywhere. Scrap lumber is at hand already. Happy to know your channel! So motivating!

Tony, how reliable is your source regarding the price of timber falling? I'm just about to start building a workshop barn at the bottom of my allotment and if I can get timber cheaper I'll hang off.
Its come directly from a timber mill, I was going to buy some to create a new studio and was told to hold off. However I dont have a guarantee, but im holding off for the moment
What type of drippers do you use to water the pots
they are 4 liters an hour drippers, i run them for 30 mins a day when its real dry
Hmm, I just knock down the foliage so that it doesn’t get damaged by wind, I lay the vines directly on the ground sort of like a controlled method, if it’s already laying on the ground the wind can’t hurt it too much. Even in the pots, I just bend them down, but I guess that wouldn’t work for someone with minimal space. I mostly do it because I grow compact garden so I need light to get through so laying down the vines all in one direction allows me to minimize the area being shaded but also maximizing the sunlight for the potatoes.
Yeah that would be ok but there is 2 issues for most people, first the sun would heat the compost and it would require more water, second watering unless you have drip irrigation installed would be difficult to get to as the haulms are where you would need to walk
I'm going to fill my 1 meter high bin with compost, would you suggest 2 potatoes every level? Also I'm thinking 3 levels or 4? Cheers
depends on how big the bon is if its a pallet sqaure do 4 per level
Is it best to remove potato flowers when they come through? This is my first year growing anything. I will definitely be making a support frame like this as my garden gets a lot of wind.
Yes remove them it wastes energy going to the tubers

I really don’t know what I’m doing wrong but for the 2nd year trying spuds in tubs I’m deflated 😒had our lottie 3yrs so the first year just chucked stuff in & it grew. Over winter transformed our bindweed haven into raised beds (11 1.6m x 3.2m plus a shed & poly) so not a huge amount of space. Bought 20 tubs which sit on a bed…..2021 scabbed, small & poor yield. 2022 clean white, but small & a yield I’d expect from a single plant not 4. if the other 19 tubs are the same I’ll try once more but might have to resort to selling the tubs. So far it’s expensive….
wow your potato growth is huge, is that normal? mine is much smaller.
They got a bit leggy as they were indoors longer than normal. Im hoping its not to the detriment of the tubers, but we will see. Ideally id like them to be a bit shorter
I’ve never heard of taking the flowers off potatoes. Why? I guess that prolongs the season and makes for larger potatoes? On occasion I get about half inch diameter round green ball where plant has flowered. Anyone know why?
June firstly when the plant puts out flowers all its interested in doing is going to seed, this means it stops putting growth into tubers as the energy is needed for seed. As gardeners we want tubers we dont need the seed, so we can send that energy down to tuber formation

@@juneshannon8074 These green pods contain the potato seeds. Open up a mature one and take a look. They are extremely small. You should not let them get to this stage but should remove the flowers. They waste energy which could be used on growing potatoes. Remove the pods to avert wasting any further energy.
@@joemercieca4794 thanks Joe. Common sense told me that, but to me they looked evil, poisonous, lol. They reminded me of deadly nightshade which a few come up on our property.
@@juneshannon8074 Well they are not evil, but they are poisonous. They contain the chemical Solanine which is the same chemical found in green potatoes.
