Even though Scout has quite a few different primary weapons, the one that most players tend to use regardless of the circumstances or their playstyle is always the stock Scattergun.
While it is easy to agree that most stock weapons were made to be universally consistent and reliable, I believe that no other Scattergun embodies the true Scout’s identity more than the Babyface’s Blaster.
By dealing damage, Scout builds his boost meter, which increases his movement speed accordingly. The unfortunate side effects of the weapon take away 34% of his clip size, leaving him with 4 shells in the chamber instead of the usual 6. It addition, Scout also starts with 10% movement speed until he starts gaining boost. Scout also looses part of his boost by performing air jumps, which we will get into later, because it is not just double jumps I am talking about. And lastly, taking damage will also reduce boost.
Well, on paper the weapon seems to have more drawbacks than positive effects, and while it is true, the additional speed is not to be underestimated. By default, scout has a regular speed of 133%, but open equipping the Baby Face’s Blaster, it falls down to just 120%, which is actually 3% less than the description of the weapon in question states. The fun begins when scout hits maximum boost, which makes him run at a 50% increased rate, totaling 173%.
At first it may look like exploiting this extra speed will be difficult, and using it as a proper advantage while fighting your enemies, however this massive speed boost unlocks a completely different playstyle. Even though Scout is generally considered a fast class, as he is the fastest in the game, his speed is not so insane that most players would lose sight of you in a regular 1 on 1. But now that you are able to be much faster than they anticipate, your movement is what will be the key to your survival in combat. You can use the speed to run around the enemy and rapidly switch directions when they are trying to keep focus on you. That will in most cases confuse them and give you a lot of extra time to hit them in the face. There are quite a few classes and subclasses that are much easier to fight once you get your boost rolling. Approaching Sniper’s from afar and dodging their bullets is a much easier task, while keeping distance from Pyro’s flames and laughing in the face of a Demoknight that is trying to charge at you while you simply out run him are just a few to name. But of course it’s not all just butterflies and rainbows. Soldier’s that get the initial shot to slow you down now have much higher odds of hitting you with a consecutive shot or two to finish you off. In order to fight Soldiers and Heavies, I found it is important to understand that you are not disallowed to jump, even though it’ll hurt your movement speed. If you end up jumping to get the kill and survive, you will get back the boost from the damage you did anyway.
The true difficulty does not lie in fighting 1 on 1, however. Taking on two or more enemies with the Baby Face’s Blaster is much harder than with any other primary weapon for the Scout, because avoiding damage becomes an insanely difficult task, even if you are rocking full speed at the end of the fight. This is why I found it best to either completely avoid fights against multiple opponents or try to keep your distance during it and use your speed as an advantage to switch the locations from which you poke and harass the enemy.
Talking of annoyance, this weapon will allow you to be more annoying than Sydney Sleeper wielding Snipers. The ability to hide and peek out of a corner so fast is what will drive the server nuts. In addition, you can attack the enemy from behind and as they turn around to search for you, you can already be behind them from the very other side. I found it very fun to explore the maps and pathways which would allow me to never be in the face of the enemy, yet never let them go until they fall to my weapon.
While every pistol the Scout has is a good choice to get the boost running, I would highly encourage you to pick between the default one or the Winger. The default pistol is very good if you feel like you can’t quite finish off your enemies with the 4 pellets you have in the clip, as it actually deals a lot of damage and is great at finish people off. Now you may be wondering why not Winger then? It deals even more damage! Well, it all comes down to how you are with using the pistols.

I run a full-burst damage loadout with the Cleaver and Wrap Assassin for this one. A clean hit and the the next few ticks of bleed completely fills up the meter. Although it's hard to get away from fights than with a pistol, it is great at starting it with

Interesting take! I may just be a plebian that cannot utilize the Cleaver consistently enough to use it.

Baby face reduces speed by 10% of scouts base stat which is 10% of 133% or 13% so thats not a lie

Damn, that is true. Odd that they choose to talk about these things in both ways, adding X % as if it was just a number addition, but then as real percentage.

This weapon is pretty good in casual setting, but in competitive it requires far more effort to be effective compared to stock scattergun or soda popper

@@Nuhhuhhuh yea thats true. but sadly here in "latin america" the tf2 competitive is completly dead x_x, so i cannot tell if the baby face in comp is good or not.

The wrap assassin is a godsend with this weapon, since it lets you get about 70% boost just by hitting a spammable projectile. This also frees up your secondary slot a bit, though pistols are still probably your best bet. The best part is, you barely have to expose yourself at all! Just a half-second in the sight line, and you don’t even ever have to see your opponent directly to extract that sweet, sweet boost.

I don't know what it is with this weapon, but on a lot of occasions I can just go slaughtering with it. You run in, kill someone, and run FAR away into the backlines until they forget about you and then repeat. Sometimes you get chain kills before retreating. It also generated a lot of toxicity, because I can imagine it would be very annoying having a speedy Scout terrorising your backlines and popping out to kill you at random. People who finally killed me would taunt on me and trash talk me unlike any other weapon before. And the feeling of going so incredibly fast that most shots will miss you and you'll be able to speed away at a moment's notice, it's very fun.
I think I might start using it more, tbh. I used to use it all the time back in the good old TF2 days, but after the nerf I just sort of dumped it.

A fun moment I had with the BFB was in Harvest, on a health shed. At full boost, a _Direct Hit Soldier_ *couldn't* hit me from ground level from the front of the shed, he kept overestimating where I'd go when I kept going back and forth on top of the shed. And isn't the BNB like NES Ghosts 'n' Goblins? 2 hits and you're dead, unless you get armor/health.

My thoughts on the changes would be to have the boost loss/damage damage ration changed to be smaller (and maybe have some kind of resistance to small multihits like fire and sentries, but thats way harder to program) and to reduce the jump penalty to 60 or 55.
The 75 boost penalty currently leaves you at the speed of a normal scout if you had full boost but is unforgiving if you have less boost. Its still a needed penalty to prevent the mobility from being too powerful though.
Also give it 1 more shell since it is based of a gun with 5 shells

You won't acknowledge the winger's mobility being a god send when you're limited to a single jump at max boost?

In my opinion they shouldn't have the damage to boost loss be as harsh as it then it'd actually be usable and have double jumps make you only lose 25 boost
