    I’m so grateful as a student that the Liszt Competition has put together this incredible series of analyses and lectures. Learning this cycle at the moment and Andrea Bonatta is my favorite interpreter, so I was on CZcams searching for a live performance and came across this well-produced video. I’m thankful to Bonatta, Howard, Chiu, and the entire competition organization for coming together to produce these invaluably insightful resources for all. Do hope that Bonatta will, at some point, finish the final few works in this cycle. Would especially appreciate his commentary on handling the climax of the Andante Lagrimoso.

    Oh my goodness....how wonderful. I've always loved this collection, and of course Benediction is my second favorite piece of all time (second to the B minor sonata of course). What wonderful analyses mr. Bonatta gives us.....Wow!!

    Thank you for this wonderful talk! Andrea Bonatta's 1989 recording of the complete HP&R remains one of the very finest among the nearly two dozen of this long-neglected cycle now available on CD (or download). And it is still the only version on a "period" instrument, always a revelation in Liszt's music. :-)

    Thank you so much for providing this exquisite content! I remember the first time I heard Harmonies poétiques et religieuses (thanks to Leslie Howard's complete piano music collection). I was moved by the music, and I hope someday to play these works.

    A wonderful insight on Liszt was the interview in 1984 with Alan Walker, after the publication of his first book, The Virtuoso Years. Many interests that Andrea Bonatta discussed are highlighted in this early Radio program. There is also lecture by Alan Walker at the Library of Congress, think is was 2004, not sure called, In Defense of Arrangement. You can Google that.

    Estoy de acuerdo con Andrea que este ciclo mereceria un mejor tratamiento en el repertorio. Yo lo descubrí por casualidad en la radio y quede inmediatamente maravillado de su lirismo, sensibilidad y delicadeza. Uno de los momentos mas inspirados de Liszt que hay que rescatar y poner en el lugar que se merece. Una pena que no dispongamos del resto del ciclo en la version de Andrea. En YT no está el ciclo completo a dia de hoy salvo un video con camara fija que desincentiva su visión

    I like Liszt very much but never really listened to this cycle, with the exception of the Number 7. I am going to change that.

    about "ictic" and "non-ictic" (in 2nd and 4th piece)
    the strong position [in meter] is called the ictus (conventionally designated by [-]), the weak position is called the non-ictus (conventionally designated [∪]). The strong position equals one syllable, the weak position 1-2 syllables. The ictuses are usually filled up by phonologically marked syllables (long ones as in ancient Greek or Latin verse, or stressed ones, as in English, German or Russian verse) (www.uni-bamberg.de/fileadmin/eng-ling/fs/Chapter_14/Index.html?IctusandNonictus.html)
