  • Dr. Martens boots are known for surviving music festivals, sandstorms, and mountain climbing. The company offered lifetime guarantees for its For Life boots and shoes, but it discontinued this service in March 2018.Dr. Martens take time to break in, and when they are comfortable, many people don’t want to part with them. Julie Derrick is a cobbler in Portland, Oregon, who's made repairing Dr. Martens her specialty. She explains how she restored a pair of boots where the soles started to detach and turned it into new.

      One thing you need to understand is I have 30 year old Docs, I don't wear anymore because I've worn them out. In the present, and for the past 5-7 years, Dr Marten company has released two new versions of the 1460 (8 hole, black), the boot you see here. The company exported manufacturing almost 20 years ago. Die hard fans noticed a vast difference in workmanship and quality of materials.
      So, to appease the fans, they sell the outsourced footwear, including the 1460, at all major retailers, and from their own webstore. For 150% to 200% more, a person can buy a 1460 Lifetime boot, or a UK manufactured boot exactly the way they had made them for decades, over half of a century at this point.
      The Lifetime boot is what it sounds like. It is the retail version, but with free replacement boots, for life. The UK manufactured one is my preference... but they need to be worked in.

      @@bobastu the lifetme boot discontinued in 2018. Also the Made in England 1460 boot which claims to be the same isnt a patch on one from the originals. The leather was thicker and so was the sole which also bouncier and had far more tread.

    • @bobastu
      @bobastu Před 2 lety

      @@g4geetar I have the made in England boot. Once I put it on, I was immediately transported back to my first Docs. Not the ones I bought at the shoe store at the mall in the late 90s and forward. I had to break these in. Not just put on and go. Leather feels like a higher grade. I don't think I'm going to get the leather separation wrinkles past the toe box, while I am getting wear there, it's not the same. The sole does feel different too. For me, with the money.
      Docs started as a police/ military type boot, and that is what I was reminded of when I put on my Made in England 1460s. Are they for everyone, I don't think so. I've had Docs since the early early 90s, 1990 I think. Different colors, always a boot. Some steel toe, some composite toe electrical safety, but my faves have always been the 1460 8 hole.

    I’m afraid there is nothing ‘professional’ about this dr. Marten ‘restoration’
    Glueing on new soles is not how they were originally done!
    Notice how difficult it was to cut off the old sole?

    That looks terrible with the white stitch on the old yellow stitch. Why not pull the old yellow one and stitch brand new. Sub par work. Then got black dye on the old yellow stitch. Come on.

    The problem with Docs is just when you’ve had em a fair while and got the upper nice and worn in the sole is worn through.

    ok so i was taking off my doc martens earlier today and i noticed the back stitching (closer to the bottom of the shoe) on the back part that is under the tag was ripped.. the stitching seems to have come loose and broken off and now the back part has a hole between the back strip and the rest of the show on the side vertically. what do i do? try to glue it myself or get them repaired? they're also brand new like a month old and i've only worn them maybe 5 - 7 times total

    Not a proper restoration .. it is using generic soles. Good job, but it wouldn’t be happening to any of my Docs .. some of us ARE expecting our boots to look original ..
