Journey to History in Mersin Part 1- Kanlı Divane Ruins, Touristic Places to Visit in Mersin

Kanlıdivane is located approximately 50 km west of Mersin. The ruins can be reached by taking a 3 km road turning north from the Yemişkumu District of Ayaş Town in Erdemli District. Entry is made with a museum card. Admission is free for teachers. Do not forget your teacher ID. The sinkhole in the ancient city is a natural pit that is 142 m long and 50 m deep, formed by the collapse of the ceiling.
The history of Kanlıdivane dates back to B.C. It is a ruin site consisting of historical buildings around a sinkhole that dates back to the 4th century BC and is considered sacred. Here Hellenistic, Roman; It is possible to see traces of the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
There are many rumors about where it got its name. It is also known as a ruin or ancient city. It is also called Olba Ancient City. According to a rumor, the region is known as Kandivane due to the legend that during the Roman period, criminals were thrown into this sinkhole and fed to animals.
Another idea is that the name "Kanlı Divane" is thought to be taken from the combination of the word "Kanlı", which comes from the red color of the rocky structure where the city is located, and the word "Divan", because the Turkmen tribes that came together in the region held their council meetings here.
According to a third statement, it is stated that this place is called Kanlıdivane, deriving from the ancient name of the city, Canytellis.
There are human reliefs such as the Relief of Armaronzas and his Family and the Relief of a Soldier on the walls of the sinkhole. In the Ancient City, there are Aba's tomb, the Üç Ayak tomb monument and 4 churches. There are also olive oil production areas of that period.
