@@SirHairless yes in the other version he holds that last note longer & powers thru timing it to end exactly as the instrumentation ends - supposedly Dimash is a perfectionist & you could tell he was upset when he went backstage after..... Interesting to note when D sings English - he struggles w/ the Digraph TH & SH... for example in early versions THAT is pronounced ZAT & Truth is pronounced Truce & Plush is pronounced Plus..... what's interesting is you can actually tell the year of the performance by how his English pronunciation has improved.....
For example, I believe his1st big English performances was 2017 Singer Show in China Queen Cover "Show Must Go On" which I'm told he had a week to learn the Phonetics & a Lara Fabian Cover of "Adiagio" - both are incredible & he plays the Piano for Adagio but his English is rough (Please Dears correct me if I'm wrong) but each year his English improves.... And now b/c he lives in LA (which is Hysterical b/c almost No Americans know who he is) his English has Vastly improved.....
Once again SH your natural teaching ability is Wonderful.... the Prep you do, the care you take in breaking down each section utilizing your deep knowledge of Music & Musical performance while adding interesting anecdotes to keep the viewer engaged is Masterful!
I Really appreciate your ability & your engaging personality - to excel in Both areas of Instruction is quite Rare.....
I can't wait to watch you react to Singer Show China 2018 "Queen Medley" w/ Dimash as a guest invited by contestants Super Vocal Boys & of course the Legendary 2017 Unforgettable Day performance at Gakku Live in front 150,000+ & he hits a C8 & bends it into a D8 w/ Vibrato for about 6 seconds - Anytime I hear it or the many times he effortlessly sings in the 7th Octave I'm still shocked even though I know it's coming..... (forgive me for the length my brotha!)

I'm totally surprised that you got more requests for this version. Dimash was ill for this performance and was certainly not at his best----which is what explains the nasal sounding vocals and several off-key moments. The original version is certainly more polished and "perfect" since he was in perfect health, so I'm happy to hear you plan to react to that one as well. I've been enjoying watching you get to know him.

Kinda glad you did this one as I’ve only seen it one other time. I’ve seen the New Wave version many times - the chorus is more prominent and he holds that last note for the duration of the music! But he does those cool ethnic trills in this one - maybe because it was a competition and he was younger? The Kazakh folk instrument is a kobyz. You probably already know by now. 😅

New wave version is unfortunately playback (at least partially). Nothing away from king Dimash, he definitely can sing it. It's still phenomenal performance. It was song premiere so it had to be perfect. That's how the music business just works. He has a contract for Igor's songs, which obliges him to perform them in a pre-arranged manner. Sometimes live, sometime not. No hate.

Its a 2 stringed instrument called a Kobyz or Qobyz. If you had chosen the New Wave version, you would have seen it.
If you can believe it, Dimash had a head cold during this performance. Yes, you are right, it's listen to the voice. He says that in a few performances. If you want to hear Dimash's top note, listen to the song Unforgettable Day when he performed it at Gakku. Again he wasn't feeling 100%, but as a professional, he performed.

This is the instrument you are asking about- it can heard in a lot of Dimash songs.
Kobyz (kyl-kobyz) is a sacred instrument embodying the spiritual world of a nomad.
It is perhaps the most magical traditional musical instrument of Kazakh people. From being a sacred solo-instrument that sounded at the hands of nomads to moving to orchestras in large concert halls, kobyz went through a long journey onto the big stage.
It sounds wonderful, and its instruments we don't get to hear much, its just so haunting.

Thank you so much for doing this version. This is the only time that he sang 'Stranger' this way that I know of. His official version is the New Wave one and it is the version that he's done at concert. His recent concert is called 'Stranger' also. He had rhinitis and had to leave the show because of this to have a procedure done. I think that Dimash's vocals in the middle are stunning and jaw dropping. He is amazing. :) I truly love hearing your comments and observations and your explanations. The 2 stringed instrument is the ancient Kobyz which I believe may be the oldest stringed instrument?

I, along with many others, am surprised to see this “Super Bros.” performance reacted to, as opposed to the “New Wave” version that far more people have seen. However, that said, I am actually a huge fan of this rendition, considering it one of the most vocally dynamic performances I’ve ever heard. (Though I realize that is the basic norm with him.) I do think the “New Wave” version is more accomplished (and a much bigger production) but that was years after this, so of course his delivery of this composition had improved. All in all, one more blockbuster performance on a mighty long list of them.

I’m so happy to hear that you are going to react to both versions. They are both fantastic but different enough to warrant their own analysis and reaction. There are two other songs that he does that have very different versions that are well worth doing double reactions to as well. First and foremost, Daybreak. His 2017 Singer version is unique and extraordinary. I highly recommend watching the extended version with the backstory (Gloria Wu does it) as the story behind the song is so much more than the lyrics alone. Additionally, Dimash is extremely sick and had lost his voice. The performance is extraordinary, not just for how amazingly he still manages to sing, but because the song is full of such emotional pain and him singing through physical pain creates this soul tearing instinctive empathy in the listener. It’s incredible. It took me years of watching that performance regularly to be able to watch it without sobbing. He does a second version of it I think about 1 year later in good health. It is perhaps the more technically perfect of the two versions and it is gorgeous and you can tell that it’s how he had wanted to honor that song. For me though, the first version with its raw emotion, has a poignancy in its “flawed” perfection that is for me more perfect even than his perfect performance (which is also absolutely amazing and should not be missed). Personally, I would love for you to do the two versions back to back as a long analysis but if you do break them up, please do them chronologically with the Singer version first. Okay, so the other song with multiple versions that are worth comparing are his different versions of Diva Dance (from the 5th Element). There are 3. Chronologically the first is from the Singer and is paired with another song and if you are going to skip one that’s the one to skip. The next one is a stand alone version I think about a year later and it is the one that matches the original song the best and is extraordinary. If you only react to one, that’s the one. The third is done as a duet with a famous Chinese Opera singer and is combined with the Drunken Concubine. It’s a very different version but so fun to watch these two very different vocal masters intertwining their skills. Diva Dance is a very short song but vocally complex so with your fantastic analysis I have no idea if you would want to do multiple versions in one reaction or break them up. Anyway, you have rapidly become my favorite music reactor as your analysis is so interesting and insightful and deepens my understanding of my enjoyment of what I’m listening to. Thank you for what you do and thank you for your attentiveness and consideration of suggestions. We really appreciate you.

    Yes, the comparison will be very interesting. You will have understood by now - if not immediately! - that Dimash not only was born with a natural gift, but has been applying 'olympic gold medal standard' discipline and training to his vocal development. An essential part of this has been his body work. He has explained in interview that he regularly does martial arts for both fun and core body strength, and also swims as much as he can to maintain and develop his lung capacity, { I'm pretty convinced that he, like the old deep sea pacific pearl divers, could sprint underwater along the sea bed for 5 minutes at a time - on the one breath! 😵‍💫}
The instrument is the Kazakh KOBYZ. Originally carved of one piece of local wood with 2 horsehair strings and a goat skin lined 'sounder'; the KOBYZ is a very ancient example of several similar instruments of that region, believed to be the forerunners of most of our modern stringed instruments today. Playing of the KOBYZ was restricted to Shamans / Medicine Men, as It's sound was believed to have the power to banish evil spirits and heal the sick. Dimash insisted on it's inclusion into this composition and it's sound certainly does add immeasurably to the whole atmosphere of the piece. Olzhas Kurmanbek is widely regarded as the foremost KOBYZ Player in the country, and is a close friend of Dimash's. They collaborate on the composition of many of his works.

I must admit that this was musically complex and showed off his vocal skills very well. HOWEVER, I also feel that this approach caused the powerful story of the song to get lost. I personally strongly prefer the original version of his performance where the lyrics and lessons of the song took center stage. Shockingly different for sure. I think this is the first performance from Dimash, out of hundreds I have seen, that I did not particularly enjoy.

Another thing @SirHairless, Dimash has used the phrase "Ascolta la voce" (Listen to the voice) in different songs. Usually using vocal fry, but also in another way. In my opinion he uses this phrase in a mysterious and mystical meaning. In different interviews the value he gives to spirituality is reflected.

Good evening from the Netherlands, subscribed, rarity, I usually write on Dimash's own channel, Thank you for explanation verbally and visually, with a certain sincerity, very pleasant... Stranger song for me is about the 110 million refugees worldwide, as you already noticed from the start, percussion instruments provide a kind of marching music that instinctively takes you into the world of Dimash in synergy with the poetic lyricism of the American poet Sharon Vaughn, the overlap with Dimash is that he is a musical traveler with a natural eagerness for new instruments, their own rhythm and specific ethnic sounds, Dimash is very aware of the challenges and processes that a foreigner has to go through, which he visually expresses in the New Wave version that you are about to watch.
Wish to you in advance a happy New Year

First of all to understand dimash's singing and music got to understand dimash and who he is. You mentioned about his goat trill, dimash's real name is dinmukhamed kanatuly qudaibergen from Kazakhstan with is located in Central Asia and was part of the old soviet union and dominantly a Muslim country. His parents are well known Opera singers but he was mostly raised by his grandparents as it is the culture to do so. This is where the music sank in dimash they taught him Arabic scales and Arabic and kazakh traditional music he started at age 3. He is a devoted Muslim and he wants to share his kazakh culture to the world through music

Love your breakdowns. To see more of the Kobyz and a native shepherd's flute I recommend Samaltau from the Tokyo Jazz Festival. It was during lock down and live streamed from his home studio. A Kazakh song about a young man conscripted by the Russian army forced to march away from all he knows leaving elderly parents to fend alone. The Kobyz master is in several of Dimash's videos. It is a 5000 year old, two stringed instrument used by shamans in past ages. In Samaltau you will hear it create the sounds of farm animals, wolves, birds and wind over the steppes. Without understanding a word you can understand all of it. My favorite at this time.

BTW in this performance he changed the original composition (in the middle of the son) he had to do it cuz this composition required each one of them to give his best vocals and as Dimash known by his wide vocal range he did what he did here , he crushed it even when he was ill, that’s why the other one is a-must.

Here he was in a Chinese show where already established artists (actors, singers of different genres, dancers etc.) had to form teams to compete against each other in different categories. Also in sports (freestyle volleyball, extremely funny 🤣). This performance was the first where he had to show what he could do before the groups formed. So he probably had to put as much of his skills as possible into that one song. It was incredibly impressive and, I think, also an extreme and breathtaking experience.
Now that sounds a bit complicated. But you may have the opportunity to check out this video where you can see the reactions of the other artists backstage as he sings. Very funny. However, I have heard that he was not entirely healthy when he performed. He usually holds the last note longer, which is probably why he didn't. Unfortunately, he also had to leave the show later due to health reasons.
Did you see the performance on the New Wave? There is a video not available on your channel.
The original is just as incredible, but not quite as blatant. It's longer and tells more of the story of the song. Either way, they're both impressive.

It is interesting to see this version while having watched the New Wave version much more often. The stringed instrument is the traditional two stringed Qobyz (kobyz) , which is played similarly to the cello. (I would love to try a Qobyz!) The New Wave version was the premiere and featured the Qobyz more predominantly. Different choices vocally and a different type of drama from Dimash. As always, enjoyed the reaction! Cheers from Canada!
