Nottingham attack: Families left traumatised by 'barbaric' police WhatsApp messages

  • Emma Webber, the mother of Barnaby Webber - who died in a stabbing attack in Nottingham, has written an emotional letter to the members of a police WhatsApp group.
    A police officer described the students stabbed to death in Nottingham last summer as 'proper butchered' and said officers 'tried to hold their inners in'.

    Got to rememnber this woman lost her son to a monster who simply got a hospital order and will probs be back on the streets in no time, shes angry and lashing out at the state who allowed this nd these officers are getting the brunt of that unfortunately

    Police see allsorts every day. If the boy was butchered - another word for cut up - then whats the problem? They literally described what they saw..

    The message states the victims were butchered. In no way did it celebrate it. They were. This was a private message. How is it worse than the murder?

      Even the Police are entitled to Freedom of speech and privacy, anybody accessing whatsapp messages in a closed group( which is encrypted) has no right to complain if they don’t like the wording!

      ​Of course they can discuss their work. Provided that they adhere to the rules regarding data protection. I work for the NHS and we will anonoymise a case so we can discuss with peers for feedback and support etc.

If it were it would have been reported to the IOPC. private whatsapp messages about a shocking incident which do not denigrate the victims are not something that should trouble anyone . In my view, there is nothing to see hear. Unfortunately the family are allowing their grief to override their objectivity. That is understandable. But their feelings do not override the objective reality.

    Did somebody actually say the messages were as barbaric as the murders? That's about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. First Responders, hospital staff etc they have to be able to say what they want and sometimes they use gallows humor or they just speak frankly

    By the location of this lady's broadcast, the family may be London based. If this is the case the Met Police on behalf of Nottinghamshire Police would have engaged a trained Family Liaision Officer to handle personally all matters of communication and update. The intention being to keep the victims family fully in the picture. What has happened here god only knows. Very poor indeed for the victims of such a brutal crime. This is Nottjnghamshires fault entirely. Police officers should never use social media in such an unauthorised way.

    Police and their childish group chat messages. Not the first time youll hear about them making fun of victims or discussing crime scenes and it wont be the last. I imagine care workers and hospital staff do this kind of invasion of privacy rubbish too in group chats

    Police need to stop getting harassed for saying things wrong. Their job isn't to be eloquent. The intent and actual meaning of the message was not inappropriate as far as I can tell. If anything these officers probably need support after dealing with situations like this.

    Somebody needs to stop WhatsApp.
    If TikTok is destroying the youth, look at WhatsApp is doing to workers.
    Or this is just humans being human and we should not make rules that stop us being human. Like did these police have to attend this horrific scene and then instead of taking time off or leaving with ptsd sent a few messages.
