For anyone wondering, he did an interview on this and said he heard a whistle so just trick-shot the ball out of play not knowing the whistle was coming from the crowd. That's why he was confused and annoyed at being subbed off.

In an interview, he explained he did it just because he thought was offside and the game was paused. If you watch better you will see that the pass was really a possible offside from a field perspective. Notice also his reaction, after that he is very surprised after seeing supporters and teammates complaining. You can also see that he doesn't aim and doesn't even check if the ball went into the net. Regarding the whistle, you can clearly hear it. In addition, if you would understand Italian you would also notice that he says to Mancini something with "fuorigioco", which means offside. He would need to be a genius to come up with a perfect excuse like that in a matter of seconds plus a very good actor to pretend to be surprised like that. All the timings, dynamics, and reactions make perfect sense with the fact that he said he thought was offside because of the whistle, no doubt.

The basics they teach you in football training is to finish your play whistle or not. That's basic. Hes a professional footballers, and that sounded nothing like the Ref's whistle. Footballers may not be smart, but if theres one thing they do know, its football. He could obviously tell the difference between that whistle and the Ref's, and he would have known that he wasn't offside anyway.
