Does He Regret Being Half Singaporean/Japanese? His Take on National Serviceđïž
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 5. 10. 2020
- Today I met a viewer who is half Singaporean & half Japanese who is currently serving National Service (military). He has an interesting profile - he lived outside of Singapore almost his whole life! Not many Japanese know Singaporean men who turned 18 have to serve the military. I myself did not know much about military either, so I decided to ask him some questions regarding NS. In return, I gave him a mini tour of China Town and made his stomach full with delicious local food.

The moment I hear Asao-san speak singlish, all i can say is, THE TONE IS ON POINT!!!
Mae XM he is cute lol
oh my the moment he used English.... he definitely has the local accent.
Very proud of this young man for coming back to serve, even though he has only lived in SG for 3 years in his entire life. Yet he returned when duty called. I wish him much success!
Gareth L exactly! Hope he can find gd local friends
Agree! And there are Singaporean males who spend all their lives here and still want to escape their service.
@@mouselim72
Or keng all the way and say out loud "we serve NS ok"
Well no matter what... You will have yo serve
There's no reason to be proud of him or to praise him for doing what is right. This is his obligation. I expect this of every Singapore son. No more, no less.
This definitely needs to be an ongoing series with Asao-san.
All the best for your NS!
ikr
It's very nice of you to take him out around Singapore after serving in NS, you are a really kind person Ghib!
Yeah I know right is so nice of ojisan
That's the reason why I love watching Ghib's videos! Compared to a lot of other Singaporean CZcamsrs (or just a lot of CZcamsrs around the world), Ghib's videos are very wholesome and sweet, while still very interesting.
@@thereisnoaddress I agree with you!
Yashashi ghib san
I think because its very seldom for him to meet another Japanese person like Asao san whom he can relate Singaporean things with.
Nice. He seems like a really nice guy. Do have him on again.
Agree .Yeah Ghib-San bring him in on video he seems so nice n polite. Handsome too. Another amazing video Ghib-Sanđđđ
yes pls!
Bring him on after he ORD!
He is very handsome....
Haha they both can be friend since he doesn't have many friend in sg.ojisan would be a good friend to him more like a big brother âșïž
Haha one year later he says he made many friends in NS. That's awesome
respect for serving NS despite him not living in Singapore!
I am a Half-Japanese too and Iâm currently serving National Service as a BMTC Trainer. I grew up in Singapore and made many friends here. I would say that I really love my time here especially with the people I have met. To keep it short, the communal living with my friends and the experiences made through the journey.
Wow that's good to know bro , maybe u should also consider join Asao and ojisan in their next outing video .
Shout out to @ Ghib Ojisan over here there's another half sinkie half Japanese currently serving NS !
Respect. Iâm sure NS made u a man too
Good man.
All the best to you! Stay safe, and always make sure that your recruits are safe as well even though training might be hectic sometimes. Safety today is better than yesterday's so keep working at it! Safety first, mission success.
é ćŒ”ăŠăă ăă!!đđ
Respect la!!! Came back to do NS!!
Respect. He will be a fine gentleman
đ
I respect this young man for going through NS like the rest of us. Even though he only lived in Singapore for such a short time. i would think that the parents view Singapore Citizenship to be valuable to hold on to. so they encourage him to go for it. Unlike certain people who Benefit for a long time in Singapore then called to serve only to Leave the country. Best wishes and stay safe !
I think it's always an interesting point of view to look at for people like Asao-san. I had one guy who was half Korean in my bmt unit and he had to serve both armies (we all just patted him on the back and told him good luck). My ns unit also had a half Tawainese and to be honest, it provided a very good perspective on our military service from someone who wasn't born/ raised here.
His singlish is so on point! Definitely need more of him on the channel!
Lmao that half korean guy got bad luck
Wah lau, double ns... No joke sia. Salute.
Singapore does not recognize dual citizenship, unless the out one is like a permanent resident. I do not c the need to serve ns both sides. Then there comes reservist training schedule, should the defence ministries liason for that fella?
@@user-ks1pj6zy3w Ya, since there's no dual citizenship allowed in Singapore, this half korean guy should then decide which citizenship he wants and just serve NS in that country.
LMFAO this is so funny, I would do anything to move to another country if I was that guy, Iâm Canadian
He should have a good grasp of hokkien vulgarities by now.
well enriched by tekong sergeants
''gnn'' huhuhu
he will learn the alternate meaning to "nabe"
He will know the other usage of the word kani nabe
This is gold, man đ@@lohchenghuat6388
My nephew, born in Singapore went to Finland to grow up, came back to serve NS last year, still in Artillery is considering staying here for further studies after his NS. Saw him as a timid boy nervous about going in for service, now a confident Artillery operator. Fully acclimatised, well almost, Singaporean. 2 years in his early life to get this experience is priceless. The period in their lives where they need to learn how to grow up to be independent and resposible. It's priceless! Good on him, Asao-san! Wish you a good experience in NS.
Combat brings the best and the worst out of a person
ARTI ARTI ARTI ARTI!
He is rather mature for his age and he is cute :) He is so blessed to have you as his friend. He is handsome. You should include him more often in your video.
He picked up the Singlish accent so well
Through his mother I presume
??? His mother is Singaporean dude lol
I'm also a half Japanese Singaporean thats going to serve NS soon. Been here since 2011 and its cool to see others that are like me
Stay safe! Respect! One of us!
Actually NS isnt so bad. Its just like secondary school all over again.
waste of time
he's only lived in Singapore for three years and already his Singlish slays.
Wow! Now you are so famous in Singapore, even Medical Mask also ask you to become their Advertising endorserïŒ
When my family and I saw you on TV commercial, we are so excited for you! As if seeing our friend on TVđ Congrat to you!
Thanks alot Tanđ
And hopefully Mediacorp will approach Ghib for guess appearance in their new Chinese or English dramas! đđđ
What a fantastic thing to do for your country. As an ex- regular UK serviceman, I know that he will make friends and memories that will last forever and develop skills that will be useful every day. Please pass on my best wishes.
Yep!
Train together,shower together,sleep together,shit together,one for all,all for one.
Thats where I'm able to forge many friendships in the army!
@@leongyet9896 Don't forget KENA punishment together.
The young man and his family are responsible people, they made the effort to do his NS. đđŒđđŒđđŒ. Hope he has more friends from today onwards.
Better ask more questions. 18 years later your son will do NS toođ
For me. NS is something you fear before entering. Something you start to learn, respect, and maybe hate when in NS. Something to think and laugh about after it is over. This can only be experienced when you go through it, not something easy to say.
My son ORDed 2 years ago. Recently came to me and said "Actually in NS you did a lot of crazy things. Now you think back, quite fun."
@@quekcj Yes that is the experience I was talking about lol.
@@quekcj ORD 8 years back and reservist for the 7th times, I still miss NS days even until today
Same but change NS to my dad hitting me when heâs drunk. My therapist said its a coping mechanism.
@@patt5085 I am sorry to hear that bro. Hope things have turned out better for you now.
Much respect! Hardly spent any time in Sg growing up and still willing to serve NS! đ
A good looking guy with polite posture, must be very popular with girls.
Yo, he'll be a trained soldier when he gets back, together with his baseball thing he gonna get mad popular mate.
@@nulnoh219 yooo ikr BET
@@nulnoh219 Sounds like a great anime plot lol
You are a good brother Ghib Ojisan. Thank you for feeding our national service man!
NS for overseas-based Singaporeans is a sensitive and political topic. Am glad this vid is done in a truthful yet light-hearted manner.
Lots of respect for a young man like him. Very mature at the age of 18! All the best in your National Service, Asao-san!
With news of NS defaulters appearing frequently in the papers lately, especially of young people who hold citizenship but lived overseas for majority of their lives, its heartening to see lads returning to Singapore just to serve their NS. Actually hor, if you ask me, I served 2.5yrs of NS and 10yrs of ICT, NS is actually not that scary honestly, and since the lad here is half Singaporean, high chance he will not be posted to those demanding combat unit. Yes, it may take up 2 years of your life but if you factor in all the leaves, offs, public holidays etc, you are effectively serving
bruh, u mean
It is 2 years of your most productive life, when you consider the missed opportunity for promotion or career advancement, that 2 years is a lot.
@@phillipchan6044 i might be one of the lucky ones, learned something useful in NS was a dual vocation TO/Combat engineer but since my CO wanted a medic replacement and backup since he kiasu, so i volunteered and became TO/Medic, got free licence and medic experience and was saf ambulance TO for 6 months, first job out of NS was ambulance paramedic while waiting for uni to start
That cuz u r serving strawberry generation of NS, unlike in the past where the training back in the 90s is hell.
@@QuestionReaper mine not so pathetic yet.
In NS you learn how to ask after somebody's mother in many languages.
Yes please have Asao-San as recurring guest in yr future videos too
I am so proud of you for landing the commercial act!!!
Regardless who you are and your ethnicity, you earn my respect for choosing to fulfil your national duty as a Singapore PR!
Applause to this boy who just come back and serve NS while not being in singapore for the longest time.
Good looking young man. Thank you for serving NS. Hope you make lots of new friends there. Do stay longer in Singapore after your NS. Get to know your second home. We welcome you to Singapore.

Iâm also half blooded of Singaporean mother and Japanese father who underwent 2 years of NS as Signaler about 10 years ago at Stagmont camp. Also shot the Grenade launcher and Matador during those days... sigh.
Wishing that he will have wonderful moment in NS and life in Singapore!
hahaha hi! we are on the same boat!
ă§ăăă~
Speed through skills brother đ
The fun part is when you talked about NS in Singapore, most of us can relate it and this is where the conversation starts
one of us!
The closest a Japanese would come close to a grenade launcher is on Call of Duty đ
Jokes aside, very interesting to learn about NS from Asao-Sanâs POV - not a familiar topic that the Japanese would know. Great insights đ
Nice personality and handsome young chap. He can fill in for u in topics more relatable to youngsters.. Start a star talent agency, sign him on as your artiste n grow your business! Lol đ
Wish him the best in his NS journey.
Very wholesome vid
I love this video and your friendship with a half Japanese/Singaporean. Does it occur to you that your Son will have to go through NS like him? Please have more videos with this Friend as we like to know his progress in NS and in Singapore.
my mom bought the masks after seeing your advertisement!!!!!
He is such an interesting person. Please feature him again in your future videos!
Such a wholesome video đ would like to see more of him on your channel!
Watching this makes me realised something... Ghib-san has actually become Singaporean đ
Ghib san's son will be like Asao san.
Hahaha I really enjoyed this. Straight out of NS, I really appreciate his alternate perspective!! You're a great host Ojisan!
Like it or hate it, doing your NS is all in your mind. I had guys in my squad that simply loath being there, but many like myself that enjoyed the experience and benefitted from it. Looks like this young chap is taking the experience positively
Yes! Please make vids of him! Get him to eat durians since he missed his chance this time. Would be interesting! And get him to speak more English/Singlish...im totally impressed since hes only 6 months in SG (other than his first 2 yrs of his life).
Enjoyed this v much...nice one Ghib!
Please come back for future videos and share more of your experience in NS .. stay safe !
Wow perfect 3 course meal + extremely well paced interview QnA video, well timed with the exploring and eating. I'm v impressed
Salute this young man who comes to serve NS without having even tasted chicken rice or sugar cane juice before
Handsome chap! Great dialogue and conversation!!
Looking forward to see him again in the next vid!
I remembered I had people from China, Malaysia , Hong Kong when I was in the military . I have a friend who's from Korea but prefer to serve his national service in singapore.
Back during my NS days,my Company medic was a Japanese, a Chinese guy in my platoon(another section), a Thai guy in my section & another platoon, and a Filipino(vehicle commander) from another platoon. Miss my NS days.... Once in a life time experience..
This is good content ghib!! Keep it up!!!!! đ

Thanks for sharing! If people have a good attitude about NS, it is actually a good learning experience.
This is also the place where you can actually make lifelong friends who have gone through the same training and hardship together.
very interesting perspective of Singapore and NS :)
Awesome video. Would love to watch more videos of you showing him around Singapore! And eating the durian parts. Haha
Such a refreshing content. Interesting to see this young boy serving his NS. Thank you for making this video, Ghib-san and keep up with such content.
When he spoke in Singlish, I have to say this, ' He is one of us!' :)
Thanks for this video! My son will be enlisted for National Service in Jan 2021 and it's great to hear about the NS experience 1st hand! Best wishes for his NS! âïž
Maybe you should be enlisted to ns too
Uhh~~ you are at Chinatown again, hope to meet you some day! Super respect Asao-san :)

It is great that you are bringing him around to eat local hawker food. Hopefully his platoon mates will bring him around as well.
This is a very insightful sharing from a half Japanese - Singaporean young man who shared his experience serving NS and fulfilment of living/interacting with his NS platoon mates...
Wishing him all the best and stay safe at all times!
Keep it up, both men are doing fine. A good, role model for young men in SG.
Deep respect for Asao-san. In spite of him having only lived in SG for only three years, he came back to serve NS. And within six months, he's picked up Singlish quite well. đđđ
Ghib, what a cook hairstyle, man! Thumbs up to your friend for coming back to serve in NS. And so sweet of you, Ghib in showing him around.
Depending on eachâs mentality, National Service canbe a very valuable experience..make the best use of this experience dude..Good Luck!
dude here speaks with such a strong Singaporean accent đ great job bro!
Hope he finds life long friends in Singapore! When he comes back to visit or even to work in the future they would be there to support him!
Please bring him back for future videos!!!
Hormat Asao-san! Thank you for serving National Service.
Some Singaporeans or half-Singaporeans have lived their whole life in another country but yet they are required to come to their âhomelandâ they might not have even lived at all before for 2 years NS.
Tip of the iceberg. 10 year reservist ( could be longer or shorter) is a thing, just trying to show a bigger picture here.
Really interesting segment, hope he gain more experienced in SG and collaborate more with you :)
It's definitely a pleasant surprise to find a Japanese/Singapore serving NS. We share some things in common. The camp I went to was also in pulau tekong many years ago and I do speak some Japanese. Good to hear how he felt about serving NS and also his comments about things Singapore.
