Oh so very - but to be pedantic, Georgina Moon in Skydiver, wearing that sexy string-mesh top, showed more of her breast and nipple outline than those Moonbase suits ever allowed the gorgeous Gabrielle to reveal...…..something of a wardrobe let-down there - and just a little too much thickness in those Moonbase costumes for our comfort...……..

I have now watched the entire series after discovering your brilliant re-edits. It certainly was ambitious and the quality of the cast was excellent, but Gabrielle Drake stole every scene she was in. Gorgeous and a decent actress too. I never saw this show being re-shown in all the years I lived in the UK, but saw only Gerry Anderson's puppet shows. To be fair, there were some pretty odd episodes in that only one season, so I see why it maybe got cancelled, but its a real pity we did'nt get more of this. I don't feel Space 1999 comes anywhere near the swinging vides of UFO. And also.... that theme music!!.. .. Dun Dun Dun ... Dun ... Dunna Dun!!! Bloody Excellent!! I can just imagine Lt. Ellis dancing to that tune 🥰

I loved UFO as a kid - still do - despite my age! The team behind this show put a set of strong characters up and the screen - both men and women and didn't grandstand about the latter (they could show Star Trek Discovery a thing or 2 about "inclusion"). The moon base would be a dull place without those girls in purple wigs - they ran the place and earned that by being good at their jobs. They remind me a bit of WAAFs in WW2 Tracking Luftwaffe raids - with the addition of being in charge of fighter direction. Gerry must have had those WW2 servicewomen in mind.

Gerry Anderson shows had some of the best female characters:
    Marina (Stingray)
    Lady Penelope (Thunderbirds)
The Spectrum Angels (Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons)
    Lt. Ellis (UFO)
Overall, I love the Gerry Anderson shows, live action, stop motion, and puppets. My personal favorites are:
Thunderbirds (My favorite vehicles are Thunderbird 3 and Fab 1)
Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons (Very dark, but still fun to watch)
UFO (Mainly for Straker, Ellis, and the vehicles)
Dick Spanner (A stop motion series about a robot detective? Yes, please.)

    • @FandersonUfo

Nixon de-funded the Apollo program in the early 70s. If USA had continued Apollo-Saturn for say another 10 years, a moon base by 1980 would have happened. Shuttle system was technically flawed and way over budget for 30 years. If the Shuttle program had never happened USA would probably have an advanced moon base by 1990 and Mars landings possible in 2000. Sorry Shuttle fans - biggest mistake in the history of manned space flight.

@@FandersonUfo Actually, shuttle was supposed to fly about once a month. The economies of scale would have made it cost less per pound to orbit; more like a commercial airliner in performance-per-dollar. They were under pressure to scale it up quickly, and that's a lot of why Challenger happened. Then they went *over-the-top* on safety, and buggered up the schedule. It caused problems in other places, too: Galileo's main antenna never opened (it had spent too long in storage, waiting for a ride.) It also caused the Air Force to work on having its own shuttle ("Blue Shuttle," it was called in development,) which drew from finite resources.
The biggest mistake in manned space flight was either Congress killing the last Apollo flights, or NASA's choice of VentureStar (which squandered $330M ona vehicle that never flew) over the RLV. Lots of people at NASA were scratching their heads at that, but hey, it LOOKS sexier, and it uses a state-of-the-art aerospike! But it never flew. Thanks, Lockheed.
Maybe it was the choice to kill shuttle before we had a working alternative. (We paid the Russians HOW MUCH?!)
I suppose that's what one should expect from a organisation run my crazy monkeys.

Disney, for example, had the world's biggest IBM AS/400 F95 at Burbank in the early 90s, and it had more cabinets than we ever see on UFO. Have you seen the server farms at Dreamworks, Google, or Amazon? Have you looked at photos of the latest in supercomputers? Even the decade-old Jaguar (Cray XT-5 www.ornl.gov/news/oak-ridge-jaguar-supercomputer-worlds-fastest) at Oak Ridge had more cabinets.

Odd that UFOs always seem to pass by the moon on their way to the earth; since thats the first line of defense, youd think theyd come in from the other side, or not even in the ecliptic at all. To be fair, one source I found years ago stated that the blast yield of each missile/torpedo was in the 100Mt range ...
Putting that in perspective, the largest nuclear weapon detonated was the (in)famous Tsar Bomba. Was designed to be 100Mt, using a fission-fusion-fission reaction chain, but the weapons scientists got a bit nervous, so replaced the last fission stage with the equivalent mass in lead. Even so, the best estimate is that the blast yield equivalent was 50-57Mt, easily twice the size of the largest American test of Bikini Bravo, which 'ran away' producing in excess of 25Mt, and creating a huge radioactive mess of the Pacific ...
So, going back, you don't really need decent aim, when 300Mt is going up within, say, 5 miles of each other ... even with atomic density being a magnitude, or so, less, than the upper stratosphere, such a massive detonation still ought to have a significant impact.
Trouble is, given how tough the UFOs were in space, and speed they were travelling at, you had to be damn lucky to score a direct hit ...

My one gripe about the show.... communicating between Moon-Earth and SID, done by voice... with a code to verify it.... and Moon to Interceptors by voice... coordinates were read out and input by hand... computers can talk to computers in their own language, MUCH faster and without error.... that is my one gripe.... OH.... sand UFO's could hide in clouds... apparently, it never dawned on anyone that radar can be used to find a hiding UFO in clouds...

My guess is that the left-hand-drive cars were a number of concept-vehicles shipped from the USA, & along with the slightly posh accents, the series was being pitched very hard to be aired on American TV!

    • @FandersonUfo
      @FandersonUfo  Před 6 lety +1

Straker was impressed by Lt Ellis' professionalism and intelligence. She is a very able and capable SHADO officer. If Ellis were male no one would question Straker's suggestion that she make a point of meeting him again on Earth. It would almost be sexist of Straker to not compliment her in that way in front of the other staff when he leaves moon base. In any organization the commander should develop close working relationships with their key people for the organization to function well. The fact that the woman is also "a very attractive girl" is not what motivates Straker in my view.
