The most amazing Ricky H stat is that at the time he was playing for the red sox in the early 2000s, he had personally stolen more bases in his career than all red sox players ever, combined, in the team's history.
I’m so glad I was just old enough to watch him play live. Every single time he was on base, he was a threat to steal. And if he was a threat to steal, he was a threat to score. I saw him manufacture so many runs out of thin air!! I had a feeling that I was watching a once-in-a-lifetime player!
Yea, Rickey was fast. But he was also smart. And he had power. What is more demoralizing to an opponent than hitting a home run the first at bat of the game? Rickey did that 81 times. The next guy in line has around 55.
All time leader in stolen bags, all time leader in runs scored. Second in all time walks, greatest leadoff hitter ever. Greatest at screwing with the oppositions mind. He had them all fukked up. Can't believe the yanks traded him. He was gold
Close enough that if the fall on the field was safe then they wouldn't have overturned it. Same the other way, if he was called out and the Dodgers wanted a review it would have stayed called an out. It was that close.
Yeah it sure looked like he was out with a slo-mo from a certain angle… but the fact that he’s 43 here and clearly MUCH slower than he was in his 30s, pretty damn cool that he made it such a close play
@@Daroach12 he grew up in Oakland. Then he showed the world what he was made of. It's an amazing story. I think you and your grandfather had one too. That's awesome.
He was amazing to watch. When he was on base it was electrifying. The pitchers were so afraid of him stealing 2nd and 3rd that it threw off their whole game. He was a one man army on the basepaths.
I'm curious of it would be possible to figure out the increase in batting average or on base percentage the battery has when Rickey was on. Pitcher preoccupied with Rickey, pitching from the stretch, more fastball or pitch-out to give the catcher an extra advantage.
511 wins is the most unbreakable but 1406 SBs is up there, you’d need a guy who can play everyday and gets to play for managers that let him constantly steal anytime he gets on. Needs to stay healthy, can’t miss half the season multiple times and he’d have to have a long career and get 75+ steals nearly every year he’s in his athletic prime. It’s very very unlikely but possible if a speed demon who’s a top on-base guy can have a long career
As a UT fan i can guarantee the "Run Ricky Run" was huge in the entire state of Texas, but this is where the saying comes from. Im old enough to say that i witnessed many, many of these stolen bases!!
Elly De LA Cruz from the Cincinnati Reds has a great chance to break the all time baseball stolen base record held by Ricky Henderson with 1,406 stolen bases.
@@shatarrahdavis2432 good reply, didn’t think about Elly but no one will ever touch Mo’s saves record and keep in mind his saves record doesn’t even include his saves in the playoffs 🤷🏻♂️
I have no idea what these people saying he was out here are looking at. His hand is literally jammed up into the bag by the time he touches him with the ball
He had 30+ SB in 21 different seasons…that will possibly never be done anymore, maybe not for even more than 10 seasons in a career…ichiro had 30+ in 10 seasons for reference.
Rickey doesn’t usually get credit for being one of the best baseball players of all-time. He’s the best leadoff hitter in MLB history, he has a Gold Glove, he has over 3000 hits, he has over 2000 walks (he was the career leader before Balco Bonds was intentionally walked nearly 700 times), he’s the career leader in runs scored, he has near 300 home runs, he’s stolen 100 or more bases 3 times (including the single season record of 130), he has the most stolen bases in MLB history (nearly 500 more or more than 50% more than the guy in second place, etc… He made people change the way that they played the game. If Willie Mays is the best ever, Rickey is a very close #2.
sadly , If people and Concerned fans do not unite to protest and deny the " New pitch Clock" then Henderson's Truly EARNED RECORD will be surpassed....2nd base is FREE NOW....all summer long ...🍻
It’s already been said, but he clearly was out in this particular play. Still impressive that he almost beat it out while getting picked off. Most pick offs lead to a run down or dead to rights out when they run. But yeah, Rickey was out. But who cares. He recorded the steal.
Rickey got past around for a lot of his career but was obviously most well known for being on the Athletics Other teams Rickey got thrown to were Yankees Blue Jays Padres Angels Mets Mariners Red Sox Dodgers

Not tryin to take anything away from my homeboy Ricky, but he didn’t steal that bag on Helton’s throw…he stole it on the pitcher for taking so long to make his leg kick and release the throw to first. He was half way to second by the time the pitcher even made the throw. Thank God for Ricky.
@@lorimeyers3839 that is nothing new though. Just about any other runner is thrown out with the same move and had Helton had a stronger arm he would have been more out. I think he was out. His pickoff move was set up to look like a pitch to get the runner to stutter, lead further, or go too early. It wasn’t a quick move to get a runner who was off too far. With the bases being made bigger and pitchers only being allowed two pick off attempts his record will be broken sometime in the next 30 years
