Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 | Vasily Petrenko & the European Union Youth Orchestra (complete symphony)

- Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, played by the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) under the baton of Vasily Petrenko. In this August 4, 2019 concert recording from the Young Euro Classic festival in Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the outstanding virtuosity of this European youth orchestra is once again made evident. The young musicians display their mastery in a work even as demanding as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with great dynamism, and a tangible delight in performing.
‘Beethoven's Ninth as the symphony of Europe’ might easily have been the motto of this concert, in which Europe is represented in many aspects: Firstly as the European Union Youth Orchestra brings together the most talented young musicians from all of the EU’s member states; secondly because the Young Euro Classic festival - with young orchestras from all over the world - is a celebration of Europe’s classical music tradition; and thirdly since it is Beethoven's arrangement of Friedrich Schiller's poem Ode To Joy - in the fourth movement of the 9th Symphony - which in 1985 served as the template for the song that has been the European Union’s official anthem.
A chance for the audience to sing along to this European anthem is the shimmering climax of this Beethoven concert. In the concert hall as well as on the public square outside the building, the watching audiences passionately sing along to ‘Freude, schöner Götterfunken’. It’s a statue of Schiller - of all things - that looms in white marble above the singing crowds in front of the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt; a goosebump-inducing moment in which the utopia of a universal community of all people - brought to life by Schiller and set to music by Beethoven - becomes, for a moment, reality.
If you would like to experience Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as a moving and atmospheric celebration of human ideals, this concert by the EUYO is for you.

One could feel an incredible sense of togetherness, of unity in diversity on a stage shared by young musicians coming from all EU countries, performing as one. That is IF he was able to listen to their rendition, right??😊
I think even Beethoven himself would jump out of his seat and give these young musicians a standing ovation.

Every time I see this I burst into tears. I'm now 87 years old and I've heard Beethoven's 9th probably thousands of times. But I still burst into tears when I hear the 9th.
Really it is❤

Wow! Good grief, that is a YOUTH Orchestra??? Wonderful beyond words! You do Beethoven proud! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
First time I heard the 9 th on my mothers lap live was in the 50's. Since then I have listened the 9 th hundreds of times live or otherwise . Yesterday was my 75 th birthday. This performance of European Youth
is probably the most impressable ever
Thats wonderful to hear. We're glad you enjoyed it! 😊

Beethoven is my favorite because of depth and grandeur simultaneously. It gives me freedom from depression and helps me cope with life.

The most beautiful crowd I have ever seen, brought together by the most beautiful music, with its own harmony.
Thank you The European Union Youth Orchestra's great performance and yes these young musicians deserved a standing ovation.
How gleeful it is to see the young generation loving the classical-romantic era so much!
Magnificent, young, vibrant, enthusiastic orchestra. A pleasure to see their talented skills.
Absolutely gorgeous, much love from the UK, hopefully the new generation who never wanted to leave will see us reunited again soon 🇬🇧🇪🇺
Also , It was played in london 👍🏻
My life's goal is to be in Vienna in 2024 for the 200th anniversary of the premier.
I've seen it in concert 11 times in the US.

Nonsense. Just because you're not aware of it doesn't mean we don't have things like this in America.
When did you last attend your local Youth Orchestra’s concert? In CT I have heard the Ridgefield Youth Symphony, The Norwalk Youth Symphony and the CT All State Youth Symphony. All displayed the same result of training, discipline, sonority and exuberance as we just saw from the European Youth Symphony. In SC it was the Greenville Youth Orchestra. In Atlanta it’s the Atlanta Youth Symphony. On CZcams I’ve heard Youth Orchestras from Japan, Spain, France, Russia, Denmark and more. Please don’t short any country’s youth including the USA.
The final part of the 4th movement(1:04:22), which begins with Presto, slows down in the middle, and literally explodes like a fireworks with the final phrase "götter funken(Sparks of the Gods)!". I saw a praying youth looking at the future that does not look like this explosion. I hope that the day when humanity will be released from COVID-19 as soon as possible and become one in the circle of joy again.
We hope so too. Thank you for your comment, himats tosh!
That ending had me crying. Beautiful
Nice Cristina...!!!
So amazing to hear Beethoven’9th Symphony played by young orchestras such as EUYO and West-Eastern Divan Orchestra! Two young ladies with flute and English horn are so talented!
When the basses and cellos come in on the fourth movement…. So low….deep, visceral sound… soulful and calming.

This may be the best performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony I have ever heard. The orchestra absolutely is superb.
We're glad you like it! Greetings from your DW Classical Music team.
Totally agree and I've heard a LOT of "famous conductor/orchestra" recorded 9th performances and attended several live. This one beats them all!
Soprano was good.....n powerful ...
🤝
Call me old school, but I really struggle with this interpretation. Of course it just a matter of taste, but for me, tempi choices and emotional tone are too far off. I will always prefer a Herbert von Karajan interpretation of the ninth.
I am 62 years old and a lover of this symphony since I was 15: this is stunning performance. You see in their body movements how into the music they are. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thank you so much for watching!

Perfect - have seen a lot of performances of the 9th and there often seems to be a desire to rush the first 3 movements to get to the "ode to joy". It's a long symphony but every part of it is beautiful.
Watching the enthusiasm and commitment to this magnificent music of Beethoven brought tears to my eyes. Extraordinary performance and I am grateful to the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Chorus, the Soloists and Vasily Petrenko. The brotherhood and sisterhood of all humankind is a lofty ideal, but perhaps the quest is not dead. Perhaps.

My god just listening to this makes the hair back of my head to stand up. Such a great joy to hear this joyful sound.
The fantastic clarity of the solo passages, the enthusiasm of the players, the professionalism - from such young artists; almost beyond imagination.
I love every note of music that Beethoven wrote But the greatest composer of all time,in my opinion, was Mozart not Beethoven. To see what I’m talking about listen to Mozart’s Soave sia il vento, from Cosi fan Tutte by Mozart. This sublime trio starts out simply as a wish of a safe voyage. But the second time they go through the lyrics of Lorenzo da Ponte, on the word desir (desire). Mozart changes the desire for a safe voyage into sexual desire. Mozart does this by simply adding a chord that you will feel tugs at your insides. Only Mozart could transform a wish for a safe voyage into sexual desire by adding a simple chord.
@@caltamino how do you feel about bachs music?

Wonderful performance! I always move to tears when I listen to this symphony especially when I was in front of Beethoven’s grave yard in Vienna . His music touches everyone’s soul on earth. Should broadcast it to the whole universe.
I agree with you 💯
Exactly. Your comment should be on Universal TV, actually.
Nothing, not even profound deafness, could stop the force of music pouring out of Beethoven. The power of his music, when combined with the words of Schiller, and played by an orchestra the absolute epitome of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts, stands as a constant reminder that together is better than apart. Fantastic performance by all involved, and especially by the EUYO.
What is "profound deafness"?

I've never been addicted to a symphony this much 😭. Also, loved the part when the whole crowd went mad singing in the last.❤️
Heartening to know young people still care about classical music as these fine performers do. Wonderful performance and evidence, once again, of what a young country the United States is. I listen and watch this at least once a week. It keeps my faith in humanity going in these (very) troubled times. I hope that these young musicians inherit a more peaceful and just world in the coming years. Can't say enough about this performance and the crowd reaction to the performance!
In case the world survives the mess it is in right now, I wanna see this again in Berlin this summer. Can you please make that happen??? This masterpiece describes exactly what the world needs right now. Putin watch this video and stop the war!!!

Gee, what a marvel group of skilful young musicians and young Vasily Petrenko! The 9th is literally captivating for the listener's mind in its transparency and lightness which render charm. The Adagio sounds particularly beautiful and almost heavenly. Conductor Petrenko leads the excellent Youth Orchestra at an appropriate pace and with carefully controlled dynamics. An emotional experience listening to this gem. Kudos to the soloists and the chorus. Thank you, DW Classical Music.

Senhor.
