I got 2 dragon fruit cuttings in the mail and after watching this I put them both in water and left on the porch since I live in Central Florida and it's extremely hot so no heat pad needed. 1 week and they both have roots, this works very good. I have zero experience with dragon fruit yet they both rooted 🤗. I'm very happy. Thank you very much for sharing this.

Great video! While waiting for my heating mat to be delivered, this idea came to me since I had them laying around…fish tank (or any container) and an aquarium heater. It works! I laid the heater at the bottom…do not let heater touch the bottom if using a plastic container, for obvious reasons. I used an eggshell light diffuser as a platform in which I elevated above the heater with bricks. The key is warm water. I set the heater to 80 degrees F

It friggin woooorrrrrked!! I can grow anything in soil it seems, but every attempt I have made at cloning in water has failed miserably. I got a dragon fruit plant from my local nursery, mother nature released an atmospheric river on California for weeks straight, and my plant started rotting...
I took 3 cuttings a few weeks ago and followed your advice to the letter. They have all rooted and are ready to go in the ground. I even got a clone of a damaged rose bush to start in the same way. Immensely grateful.

    1. do you need the thermostart to check the temperature of the heating mat or you just plug it in the outlet and use it ?
    2. do you plug ( the heating mat) in the outlet continuously in 14 days (/until you see the root) ?
    3. where you put the heating mat on, is it hot/ damage the surface that we put the heating mat during these 14 days ?

I followed the same technique - exactly the same heated mat and put the dragon fruit in water in a vase. Just over a week later and no signs at all of any root growth. What am I doing wrong? Does it matter how you cut it? The cuttings are mature cuttings (around 20 inches long) and had been left for almost 2 weeks to callous over. They were mostly cut from the stem part. Should I try again and try doing a v shaped cutting instead? I see on the v shape cutting it looks like you cut away the flesh but left a visible and protruding stem section. Is that the best technique? Thanks!

As you are so much into this hobby, please try this. I think it will work really well. You really do not need to change the water at all. First, I recommend using a bucket and put water in as you would normally do. Then pour about 20ml of bleach into the bucket to sanitize the water, the bucket and the bottoms of the cuttings over 1 minute. Then discard the water and put new water into the bucket. Then put an aquarium airstone into the water and connect it to an aquarium air pump. The air will be bubbling in the water and add a lot of oxygen into the water. This will help keep the water fresh forever. Bacterial growth will be minimal. The oxygen will help the stems root very quickly.
Another thing I also like you to try to root and graft the stems at the same time. The idea is that you should be able to graft different varieties on unrooted stems and root them at the same time. This will save a lot of time. I have just done a bunch of grafts and root them at the same time. In a few weeks I can report the outcome. I expect success because grafting dragon fruit plants is so easy. I get 100% in my first attempt!

Just adopted a dragonfruit from a neighboring gardener who was throwing it out. It's in rough shape. I watered it for several days then transplanted it to the good soil in my garden. Watering it when it had previously been water neglected did cause some rot on one of the stems. It turned yellow and mushy. I cut it but there was some healthy green stem on one end so I cut that too. I will trim and callous that stem and try your method to root it. I've been watching for a while now and was planning to buy a dragonfruit with a bit of stem on it to try rooting. I think this might be easier to try my first dragonfruit propagation. Very excited. I don't expect I will get fruit in San Francisco weather but I'm moving to Vietnam soon and will start over there. Dragonfruit is so cool.
