I'm not surprised. Sesame Street helped shape me, and that was passed on to my children, who are compassionate, tolerant, empathic young adults who-- brag alert-- are killing it at college.

Sesame Street was wonderful when I was growing up. The images of all races, all people, young and old, “grouchy” or happy working and playing together and getting along was golden!

Funny thing is, Sesame Street pretty much was the world I saw. Not with rose colored glasses, but diversity - which is all I ever saw in my neighborhood. Growing older, yeah.. you see things a bit (well a lot) more. But my foundation was my parents and definitely Sesame Street with a touch of Electric Company and Zoom. CTW. PBS. Thank you

Just SEEING black people on TV was revolutionary for me as a white child in the segregated suburbs. It was my ONLY access to cultural diversity. BLESS YOU, CTW!

I grew up in a predominantly Black neighborhood. My grandmother ran a day care center in our downstairs and I can only remember one white family. Of course I thought they were Black too lol. Just light like me. It was a nice mix of adult characters. We were exposed to everyone on Sesame Street.

That was my generation growing up, and I am so grateful to people such as Dr. Chester Pierce, who made that effort to present a well balanced program to me, so I could grow up with a well-balanced view of the people in our society ❤

I was one of the kids born in the mid 60s who watched Sesame Street to learn, and help with being ready for school. I loved the show and frankly, thought little about the fact that there were children who weren't like me, and my favorite adults were Luis and Gordon. They seemed like such good men.
My generation was fortunate to grow up seeing that we are all essentially the same. Just people trying to live our lives to the best of our ability.

I wasn't in the target audience as I was school aged when Sesame Street started. My sister was born after it came on and I was forced to watch it everyday at 4. Even I have fond memories of it and watched it with my own child. The lessons were good for white children as well. It showed that everyone has similar abilities and challenges. Helping children understand how to treat everyone as equal human beings with the same value no matter their color or physical differences was a wonderful part of it.

I loved the diversity of Sesame Street as a child. Luis and Maria were two of my favorites. I started reading at the age of two, thanks to my grandmother who adopted me and taught me but I don't doubt that Sesame Street taught me plenty as well. Never knew it was geared towards kids like me, inner city Black children, but I am grateful for it. My own kids also watched it and now my granddaughter watches as well. I hope it's still here when she has children too. I wish we could bring back the Reading Rainbow and Electric Company!

Yes. Children need to learn the alphabet, the sounds of the letters, and their numbers - how to count from 1 to 100 before they first attend school. My mom taught me, but all parents are not prepared in how to teach their children.

I'm 60. I grew up on daily Sesame Street. I'm a white Australian. My whole childhood concept of post 1960's USA urban life and race relations was based on what I saw on Sesame Street. I'm still in shock and so sad about knowing better. Growing up is brutal. I remain grateful to CTW for making me a better person nonetheless.

So awesome! I started watching Sesame Street the year I was born in the early 70s. Mom would strap me in a chair and clean up or cook while I watched. She said I knew the alphabet before I could talk because they would show a letter or number as part of a lesson and I would get excited and reach out and vocalize as if to say I get it! I remember the Spanish Sesame Street taught. I wish there had been more, because what little they taught is burned into my mind. There is no translation for it into English. It just means what it means. Most of all, thank goodness for the positive depiction of minority people. Not generalized groups, but really fleshed out and rich characters. And Sesame Street was funny! There were jokes targeted for adults to encourage parents to watch with their children. As a little white girl, I was not their target audience, but I benefited greatly from the show regardless. Thank God for Sesame Street!

I remember when I was probably a teenager, my grandmother said she would often ask me how I learned certain things, like counting from 1-10 in Spanish. I told her I learned it by watching Sesame Street. I grew up in rural Iowa, so it definitely shaped me into someone who welcomes diversity in the marketplace

The first time I watched that show I was in Ms. Williams 2nd grade classroom. She would push this tall cart with a television on it. And right before lunch time we be watching it and getting ready to line up for lunch. But when I was at home I never watched it. Cookie Monster, The Count and Hermit the frog was my favorite characters.
