I was lucky enough to meet Dr Kevin Clancy and was shown around this museum, and were allowed to handle some of these stunning coins. If you have not been on the VIP gold tour at the mint......get it booked. I’m there on the first tour of 2020 you also get to strike your own sovereign.

At a hefty price though! (£480 for the sovereign strike!) Although, having looked at it just now, I'm definitely going to book a gold tour. I went along on one of the standard tours a couple years back, but this seems like a whole different experience. I had no idea these were even a thing! So thank you very much for informing me : )

@@ChimozuFu No problems, the level of access is amazing, you get to speak with the staff, machine operators, you also get detail entry into the Die and proof areas, I saw dies for new coins and got to speak with the craftsmen and women who painstakingly hand finish the dies, it gave me a new apperception into the level of work that the RM puts into our coinage.

@@golddiggerdave I will be booking I think soon, been to the normal tour for the last four SYOs, time to step the game up to the next level I think! Don't think I'll be shelling out for the Sovereign SYO though! You can strike a Silver Proof as an alternative right?

0:04 💡 The sovereign was introduced by Henry VII in 1489, symbolizing royal authority and England's emergence on the European stage with a large, glamorous gold coin.
1:37 🔄 The sovereign underwent name changes over the centuries, known as the Guinea in the 17th and 18th centuries, before its reintroduction in 1817 with a neoclassical design.
3:22 🐉 The iconic design of St. George slaying the dragon, introduced in 1817, became closely associated with the sovereign and remains a classic even today.
3:49 💰 During the Victorian period, the sovereign was issued in large quantities, becoming more accessible to a broader range of people as wages increased.
4:02 🌍 The First World War led to a decline in the use of sovereigns as circulating currency, but they found new roles as commemorative coins, stabilizers of international exchange rates, and even as elements in spy novels like James Bond.

The "new" sovereign is made with PAMP Suisse and the British Mint and contains copper which gives it a rose-ish color. I've seen new ones on Apmex a couple years ago.
