After 10 years of owning it, I sold my studio space! But before the transaction was complete, I did one final tour...the last walkthrough. Hope you like it and I hope it might provide you with some inspiration to grow your creative business!
I founded my agency, Riser, in 2002. In 2004, it was time to move my then two employees out of my basement and into a studio space. I promptly rented the cheapest space I could find…always being financially conservative by nature (borderline financially paranoid). A few years later we outgrew that space and I purchased my first commercial property.
By 2011, we had outgrown our second space and it was finally the right time to design and build the dream studio. I found an awesome space in an up-and-coming area and purchased the raw shell. I created an initial floor plan and hired an architect to create an official rendering. Construction lasted 4 months and we finally moved in at the start of 2012.
Glass walls and doors, whiteboard room, a giant chalkboard wall, large conference room, new desks and furniture, foosball, ping pong, a large meeting room, several break areas, a full kitchen, speakers built into the ceiling throughout the entire office, and a barbecue grill all combined to make this studio space the space of my dreams. We would even bake fresh cookies when we had clients come to visit. There is nothing quite like a cool studio that smells like fresh cookies!
After we moved in, 2012 was our biggest billing year to date. Home court advantage was real. The space created a new image of our agency in the eyes of both our clients and employees. Our billings increased. Team enthusiasm increased. Our cool new studio space had a dramatic impact on the perception of my agency.
I sold my agency in 2015 and have been leasing the space out to a great company for the past 6 years.

Hi Jenna! Haha. Ya... the spare bedroom is where everyone seems to start. I'm glad you have aspirations to build your agency. It is possible and even probable if you set your mind to it. I'd love to hear updates from you as the steps become reality.

@Michael Janda... thank you for this video and your explenation. Its truly an inspiration. What was your turning point when you've decided you want to do what you're doing now?
After I accomplished all of the goals I had for my agency...and a few that I didn't have, I started to want a new mountain to climb. That got me thinking about what I really loved and how I could make a career from it. Which led me to what I do now.
