Will AI takeover coder jobs? I think large portions of it will be automated; I can imagine a space where Square will literally code full custom websites for a client. But it can’t take over all…keep upskilling and continuing to learn and develop is the way to go imo. Until then AI is a great resource tool for developers. Lol it’s funny to see the Stackoverflow memes. Even this platform can and most likely will evolve with AI.

I am just now learning python and since I can’t afford a code camp and don’t have a mentor currently, I use chatgpt to not only show me where I’m messing up, but asking to show me a cleaner version and explain the differences. I basically use it to guide and teach me rather than to just do it for me 😅

      Genuine question; how's that going?
I recently read an article that supposedly ChatGPT's ability to correctly answer simple math problems dropped from 98% to 2% in a few moths.
There are similar articles about it's ability to program and I recall reading quite a few years ago the seeming paradox that at some point more data makes predictive algorithms (like chatGPT) more uncertain.

Definitely think it’s still important to learn coding because if your code doesn’t quite work the way you want it to and you need to debug it, it would help to have a fundamental understanding to figure out the problem. Even if chatgpt can help you debug, if you don’t know what you're coding, it’ll just be a black box to you that magically works.

And having used it as a new dev, I can tell you that you need to know some coding to even begin to know what to tell it to do. A small business owner can’t just tell ChatGPT "Build me a full stack app for my restaurant" and expect the AI to spit out a production ready app. They’ll still need a developer to get the app ready for production.

AI is going to replace coders. I advise everyone to move away from tech degrees they are useless now or will be well before you retire. We push all of these people into computer science and I never understood why. First they outsourced those jobs, then brought in H1B visa holders now they will automate them away.

    Hi Tiff!
I'm learning to code right now, but I'm in my last semester of college for a social science and a psychology degree. After being a dual major, I can't do college more right now. I'm learning from free or inexpensive resources right now, and considering college again in the future if I find it to be necessary. I've been so discouraged, especially hearing so many people talking about how it's impossible to break into the market without a CS degree or something similar. This gave me a bit of hope that my skills from the degrees I'm already finishing will give me a small push when breaking into the tech industry. I have SOO much to learn still, but I feel a bit better now. Thank you!

It is a mindset that makes people successful in any field. Hell yes you have to have people skills or whatever they call it today. Your view that software engineering is a tool just like carpentry is correct in my view. I am approach this field does it solve problems, build something useful, etc. Sitting and coding all day get goofy mentally if you don't take care of yourself. Also, I don't get into the hype of this field or cybersecurity etc. My overall goal is to work with dementia families. That is what the software engineering stuff going to pay for. Nueroscience material of the brain etc. For myself all this technology is just a tool. Keep up the good work.

Hey tiff , thanks for your video .
well , after i heard and saw what chatGPT does , i was thinking "hey , it gonna do better than all of us . maybe in 5 years".
im not a senior dev , i just started like months ago , learning REACT . but i was thinking that maybe i should learn something more creative .
as u said , something like more human skills . something that AI is least expected to do , like Digital Drawing . or maybe try to learn how to write codes for AI .
i generally like coding and the logic going on there , but before all this ChatGPT thing , i already felt like i am not doing any CREATIVE thing . like im just following a procedure to get to some results . thats why i also wonder is being a developer is even an appropriate career for me or not .
So .. umm ... what do u think ? should i go for more creative careers like i mentioned ? what would be the best way to do it ?
Thank you for your time , im glad that you exist , somewhere on the planet xD

Computer security jobs are the current fad, but you'll quietly go mad trying to keep up with field. Do computer security if you got to, but it's a tough one. I might be totally wrong, but my understanding is, the tools like CHatGPT are not really AIs that do understand how to code. They are language models, they sort of repeat what they have been fed with in respect to propabilities. That means, they will never invent something new.
I have the fear, our knowledge about code and everything else will kind of deteriorate because of a form of information entropy when no humans code or write texts, because then the AIs will begin to repeat what other AIs have written, and so forth. Knowledge will decline for sure.

I am 16 years developer and 10 years ago some guys said to me that coding is dead :-) And now I am still in demand working on fun and great projects learning new things... coding, designing, testing, documenting, colaborating, teaching juniors... and it's still fun for me. Coding for me is like playing with Lego 🙂

I can imagine that e.g. everyone is gonna use AI to code in the future and if something needs to be changed then they will need someone who actually understands the code :D

  • @tear728
    @tear728 Před rokem

Business logic will always be the foundation of software products. This requires specific knowledge of the codebase and I don't see AI being effective at that any time soon.
For example, most of a companies products are built on the back of a primary internal API or set of APIs. If they need to add a feature specific to customer needs or squash a bug, the code written is not going to be generic, boilerplate code.
To effectively use AI to replace developers, it would require that companies design their products and internal APIs in a way that is generic and can be as boilerplate as possible.
Rewrite of legacy APIs is not feasible in most cases.

Coding today feels like cheating to me. So much is done for you and so much can be done in a short time thanks to all the libraries, frameworks and modern languages like Python and C#/Java (yes, those). You are standing on the shoulders of giants today. Enjoy it. Build. Create. I am coming from an era of Pascal, BASIC, Assembly, C in the 90s.
