  • Forty acres in Minnesota gets a habitat makeover plan for better deer hunting! It's kind of like an island in a sea of high production ag! In the winter the deer will pour into this property as an oasis of cover and food! There will be lots of options to hunt this 40 acres - it'll hunt much bigger than it lays out on a map!
    With this plan he will be able to enter the property from different directions and not alert deer.
    Topics covered:
    -Canary Grass, an invasive grass that has little wildlife benefit/
    -Planting a privacy screen at the property boundary front: Egyptian wheat vs. a sorghum mix and in -some places, Eastern Red Cedar!
    -Evaluating the 3 basics of any habitat management plan: food, cover, and water
    -Summer food plots when surrounded by hundreds of acres of production agriculture: corn and alfalfa.
    -A plan for over seeding summer food plots to provide food for the fall.
    -Creating bottlenecks into quality food after local crops are harvested.
    -Establishing bedding areas.
    -Using swtich grass. blue stem, little blue stem in the habitat.
    -Options of establishing an orchard.
    -Timber stand improvement on the hardwood timber block.
    -Managing hunting pressure in each block.
    Maximizing food and cover to get deer using the property and a hunting strategy for the best deer hunting on this property.

    I have a 120 tree orchard. Need 6 foot fence. 2x4 welded wire. Probably 3 to 4 hundred feet and 6, 7 foot tall posts per 100 foot. Plot rock, chicken litter, old hay, and wood chips at planting layered on top of soil after planting trees. Morse nursery in Michigan and starkbros.com has large varieties. Local conservation district has good varieties in Michigan. Crabapple trees should be 25 to 30% of trees. Liberty, enterprise, wolf river, Whitney Crabapple, gold rush are great choices. Water in the first year with fish fertilizer and a little miracle gro every 2 weeks til mid July.

    Love these small plot plans. Ive been looking for property for the past 4-5 years. Around 20 acres of land. Ive been very picky and avoiding land where the center of the property is the best for building a house. I was surprised to see this plot with a house right smack dead in center. On this plot specifically, do you see an issue with having the home in this position? Where the owner and neighbors would have to drive through/by the front portion of the land daily. This type of layout always made me feel like deer wouldnt want to frequent the busy areas thus making the land useless.

    After watching your videos and saving to purchase my own land for years, I just put in an offer on a 13 acre property a few minutes ago. This property has a lot of similarities to the one in this video, and I am going to implement this screening technique with native grasses. Thanks for another great video, and for all the inspiration.

    I’ve got 21 acres of hunting land and I have lots of doe’s all year long but no bucks except during the rut. How could I bring bucks to my land all year long? They show up mid November to mid December

    • @WWOofficial
      @WWOofficial Před 3 lety +4

      You don’t want bucks on your land all year long and with only 21 acres it’s almost impossible to do so, however I have 40 acres and I could care less where the deer are in the summer and late winter (after and before hunting season) I don’t care where they are at night aswell, the only thing you should care about is where they are during daylight when it’s hunting season, and the reason you probably don’t have any bucks is because you have too many does, (yes that is an issue) what happens when you have to many does is it creates to much competition for food and bedding and to much social pressure and bucks don’t like that, big bucks like to bed alone where their not going to be bothered and they like to have their own space, does that are here today are here to stay which means that the does you have on your land right now are going to be there year round leaving very little room for bucks, how you can fix that is create layers on your property for bedding, what that means is if you have a food plot on your property the does are going to bed as close to that as possible (100-250 yards away) if you go another (2-400 yards) thats where the bucks will bed, so you need to create layers of bedding, create a big bedding area close to the food for does and create bedding a little further back for bucks so they have their space, if the bucks bed on ur neighbors property that’s fine too, once you have done that create food adjacent to the bedding and make your food plot a fall food plot, not a summer food plot or (year round) food plot, you want those deer on your land during hunting season not attracting so many does and deer to your property during the summer and creating a bunch of social pressure, so once you have done those things make sure you can get in and out of your stands un detected, don’t put stands right by bedding areas or (core areas) leave those alone, but put stands on travel corridors and transition areas, put stands in between food and bedding or between bedding and bedding but leave those core areas alone and make sure you are putting stands on the edge of the property leaving that core area alone and blow all of your sent to your neighbors and with all those things combined you should see changes, hope this helps👍right it all down

      Wyatt - After years of using GPS collars and my colleagues using GPS collars it's obvious deer using different portions of their home range during different times of year. You'll want to focus on attracting bucks to your property during the hunting season and that will depend on the resources on your land and the neighboring lands.

    Seems like your typical recommendation for establishing native grass areas is prescribed fire and let the native seed bank do the rest. What’s the reasoning behind advising this landowner to buy and plant the warm season grass?
    Not criticizing...just honestly curious what the difference is!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Před 3 lety

      Nate - Due to past practices it was doubtful there would be a good native grass seed bank at this location. Where the land that has been tilled and lots of various herbicides applied, the native seed bank will likely be limited.
