    Reminds me very much of the witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600's. 19 hanged, one pressed to death with heavy stones and 5 died in custody. I grew up about 10 Miles from Gallows hill.

      Makes ya notice a real relationship with highly religiousness and supposed witchcraft. Massachusetts was founded by quakers seeking religious freedom, right?

      I had no idea that so many people died as a result of this.
      Thanks for that information.

    Just an FYI, the host mixed up the geographic locations on the Westfjords map: Ísafjörður should have been named when identifying the Northern Westfjords and Patreksfjörður the southern Westfjords. Other than that, I got necropants fever and the only remedy is more disco and more donors 🕺

    A very pleasant surprise! Another episode of Supernatural Iceland. A dark part of life in times gone by... Sad and tragic for the people convicted of witchcraft. I watched this episode a second time. Thanks for sharing more of Iceland's history. So well done. Gorgeous snowy landscapes. Many thanks. Dear Art, hope you have an enjoyable break.

    Thank you, Valur, for connecting us again with Iceland's past history. This type of video is just one of the reasons TRG is one of my favorite CZcams channels. Being able to travel in Iceland, and see this history in the landscape is a real joy.

    Fascinating 👌. The pants of death 😅😳. "Popsicles, I mean icicles", 😅, love it🤗. So many humourous lines 👍. Was this done awhile ago, or is that snow now? The colourful houses against the white snow looks so beautiful 😍

    I thought that was The sorcerer’ screed you had In Your pocket. Great book to explain about the Runes and what there used for.
    Excellent episode to wrap up the supernatural Iceland series. 😉

    Valur what an unusual and interesting story on the folklore of Iceland. I think it is amazing how you walk around the small towns and countryside while telling your stories and as in the one episode I watched you talked about the few crimes that had occurred in the area. I say few because her in the US where I live crime is everywhere. Best of luck and good health to you.

    Future reference for English: "Castle" is actually pronounced without the "T" - like "casull".

    @TheReykjavikGrapevine 2:15, It’s the other way around with patreksfjordur and isafjordur. Isafjordur is more to the north and Patreksfjordur more to the west.

    Really cool subject matter... Seems ancient mythology all over the earth has these fantastic lors between "good spirits vs evil spirits"... Creative manifestation may be more real than the fantasy we easily dismiss... Always enjoy checking-in on Iceland. Thx! 😉

    It's odd to hear English spoken in the Icelandic sound system. :-) So many strange fricatives. Almost sounds like Old English or Old Norse.

    Even today there are still too many countries - in Africa and Asia - which I'd never survive, going by broom there or not. This planet needs more education and less religion.

    I really enjoy your channel. I really enjoy your stories and sharing the culture.l
    was just in Iceland in September for the first time.
    My great grandmother was from Iceland and immigrated to Canada in the 1800’s. I have just connected with distant family who’s great grandmother was my great grandmothers sister. Have you done any videos on the Icelandic people who left to find a different life for themselves. Why they left?I found it interesting that people asked why I was so interred in my heritage. I have always been drawn to Icelandand it was always my dream to see the country and learn the culture. Thank you for your channel. 😊

    That story about the pants is the most messed up thing I have ever heard, and I have read a couple of grimoirs so that is saying something. Steal the gold of a poor window, so that you can wear the skin of the legs of her late husband? Who thinks of this? The devil himself?

    • @j.c.m5168
      @j.c.m5168 Před rokem

      You don't have to wear the widows dead husband's skin. You just steal her gold and put it in the scrotum of the skin that you did agree to use. See? It's not soooooo bad. 😉🤣

  • @scotarg1973
    @scotarg1973 Před rokem +6

    The necro-pants story, worn after digging up dead body and skinning the skin from legs and genitals, followed by robbing a poor widow of all her gold on the day of the funeral of her dearly departed husband.........you guys are way too isolated up in Iceland!
    Even if it's never been acted on, the demented imagination of some deeply disturbed individuals had those thoughts......wtf! Those are your relatives Valur! 🤔😱🤣
