Round 1 was the best round of boxing I ever saw, and I've been a fight fan for 62 years. (JMO) There are dozens that could be in 2nd place but I never saw a round like this where each could have legitimately won or lost from one second to the next.
Hagler was so damn tough that he broke Hearns' infamous right hand with his dome. While Hearns was so mentally strong he kept punching Hagler with his broken fist.
I remember after the fight Hagler did a commercial where he eating a slice of pizza. He had a bandaid above his eye. He took a bite looked into the camera and said 'I wonder what Tommy is eating for dinner tonight. Probably soup."
This is sheer madness, incredible incredible fighters nobody lost here, Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns made boxing history. You’re never any three rounds like this in history, they came out, wanting to kill, so to speak, there was no feeling each other out. This was a brawl.
@jefferyrandall8030 I love Marvin. I knew him. If you look at both of them after the fight it didn't look like Marvin lost. SRL ran for most of the fight. His jabs were while he was backing up. No effect. Oh well, can't change history.
I understand that it’s cheaper in an individual pocket to do PPV but I sure did enjoy the atmosphere of closed circuit in an arena with 8000 others who all came to the event. Leonard v Hearns 1 on 9/16/81 was as close to actually being at Caesers Palace as I could imagine. There was an electric atmosphere that night that ppv just doesn’t capture. And what a great show those two greats put on! The ebbs and flows and the shifting tactics made for a generational event…money well spent!
I watched boxing growing up with my Dad and I became a fan. in slot of fights back then there would generally be the favorite and underdog, and an understanding that you gotta really show up and take it from the favorite or let's say the Champ. This fight was different, Now I would always get first pick of fighters and my pops would by default get other fighter. I remember my dad's teachings and me seemingly always learn the hard way by thinking young and up an coming underdog against a seasoned a consistent team or single opponent. I grew up feeling like I was an underdog and feeling I wanted to prove my beliefs and belief in myself. I knew everything but I remember I never beat or won against my dad whether playing or picking. Never meaning I didn't or let me say I beat my pops in checkers once, beat him in pool once. Now my pops was always quiet in defeating me and never gloated. My pops told me over and over a boxer will most always win against a brawler. This is a pivotal choice I had to make I knew in my mind Hearns tactically was a better boxer that can knockout his opponent and my dad asked ok son watch you gonna do? I turned and said "Dad Hagler is going to knock him out in 5 rounds! " Dad said ok why? I said "Hagler is gonna shut him up Hearns talks too much." Dad puts his cigarette out and looks at me and says, " David you're finally using your head, good pick son." Hagler knocks him out in 3. My Dad would never pick against me again ever and always supported me in anything I ever done after this fight. it was like a coming of age in my life really. Hagler fought like hell applying pressure never relenting.
I was too young have watched these live, but I know for a fkn fact these dudes walk through any middleweight not named Roy jones jr… any. Ggg canelo Martínez prime Williams winky anyone. These dudes were monsters…
I doubt it. Hearns couldnt box if hagler came out swinging like this. Hearns ability to outbox others - was dependant on his ability to punish them if the try getting close, hagler wanted to get close and didnt fall down no matter what hearns threw at him, so hearns couldnt keep him humble, thus, could not outbox him.
@@eranliber5993 Hypothetically speaking, Hearns doesn’t break his hands, he probably stops Hagler, because he hurt Hagler bad in the first round and I think broke his nose. But it’s a hypothetical scenario because Hagler knocked him out
One of the greatest fights ever. Imo there is only one fighter in today's boxing that might have stood any chance against those 2, and that is Terrance "bud" Crawford. He has power and tenacity like hearns and Hagler plus speed and skill like sugar ray.
One thing it always struck me about this fight, was that hearns gave up defensive responsibility early and often. By the time he started wising up and employing his high guard, it was too late. Hagler, on the other hand, maintained defensive responsibility throughout the fight. His discipline, as much as his boxing skill otherwise, one that fight. You cannot.. No matter who you are, abandon your defense.
@@infiad1275 I think Hearns comments after the fight indicated he had an enormous amount of respect for Hagler. Particularly, his comment that he didn't want to talk about his broken hand because he didn't want to rob Hagler of his greatness. Both of these men were street-wise, that fully understood who the other guy was, what they both were, and where they both came from. That innate recognition is ultimately what made this fight so awesome. Their approach was that of two hardened criminals going to battle. Tyson and Duran ALSO shared this perspective. Leonard...kinda not so much. He took his lumps, his share of pain and damage, but he never appeared to be cut from the same cloth as the others. And in a way...this is what made him so special and appealing to the masses. Could say the same thing about Ali in comparison to Frazier, Liston, Foreman, and most of the others he scrapped with.
