Silent films owe a great deal to the vaudeville tradition; its short, unrelated stage acts were not only a nearly inexhaustible source for early film content, but also a programming model for nickelodeon theaters. The Dancing Pig was a mind-boggling music hall routine filmed several times for different companies - here, for Pathé Frères in 1907. - Zábava
This is so funny, the most amazing feature of the costume for me is when the pig kinds "smiles" or "laughs". That was so awesome!
There is 2 people in the costume, a petite girl riding piggyback on a man, she does the face stuff
@@breakingames7772 smile? That's the creepyest smile I even saw
@@breakingames7772 You're absolutely right. I was there too!!! I remember.
I cracked up at the woman's dancing--she's really good. This is weird, cute and hilarious.
@@acmelkathat's because at the end the pig eats the girl and that's an evil laugh
If I had to guess, the eyes are controlled by the performers own face inside the costume...move your head right or left or in a circle and the eyes do the same through some sort of contraption. When the rest of the face is articulated, such as when the tongue hangs out or the pig smiles, the right hand goes limp. I'm thinking the performer has removed his hand from within the arm and is now controlling various mechanisms for the articulation. I do think the performer's hand is inside the tongue to articulate it. I'm particularly impressed by the smiling mechanism that not only pulls up the sides of the mouth but makes the eyes squint. It's all incredibly clever and remarkably done. It's a pity we don't have more information about the performer or designer.
If you look later in the video when the pig is turned around you can see the impression of a second person's back pressed against the suit, so there's two people in that thing, one is riding "piggy back." The pun is almost unintentional.
Ya prob a petite woman
Yeah, I also noticed the tongue sort of got "stuck" around 3:30, but the arms were waiving and they seemed to try to jam the tongue back in unobtrusively before exiting the stage again. Quite the workout!
Must’ve been a real talent if he/she did 3:14
If I had to guess, the pig is satan
It really is amazing to think that this little weird film sat in some storage unit in France for over 100 years until it was discovered. This thing could've been easily destroyed in that time but nope it survived everything the 20th century had to throw at it while everyone probably forgot about it months after it initially came out.
How did you know this
And also amazing that 500 cans of film of Pink Floyd in Pompeii sat in some storage unit in France for a few years and then was intentionally incinerated. I would rather have seen that than this.
@@Greg4096 >Pink Floyd
>In Pompeii
>Incinerated
Honestly Sometimes life has funny situations and jokes that write themselves.
The wierdest thing to think about is, this is just 1 film that survived out of many possible ones, so imagine how many films like this one we lost before even getting access to.
And the French are good at preserving their artifacts. Think what weirdness has been lost elsewhere:
A conservative estimate says that 98% of *all* Brazilian silents are lost ~ including what's believed to have been the first feature-length animation film (a three-minute excerpt survives).
The detail on the costume is damn good. Even by modern standards.
This would certainly make Jim Henson smile.
those were artists my friend, not your average costume vendor. Look at this, a century from today they will say the same at Jim Henson's Dark Crystal costumes, the original Ridley Scott' Alien costume, maybe people in the future are going to buy same Michael Jackson' Thriller quality zombie costume in Walmarts.
@@ajx1994 I thought about Link Hogthrob when I first saw the character!
You mean it is way better than modern "standards".
I mean did you see the detail of his hat doing a flip when he enters the scene? Or the way they made his face so realist and expressive during the dances or the way the wearer of the costume makes it so believable? It's incredible. It's actually way better than most "modern standards". By far.
That is an impressive pig costume.
The face is articulated!
There's a rumor that it wasn't a costume
Looks better than the original Mickey and Minnie mouse costumes
More impressive is the person on the inside running the show.
@@venomwise i want whatever you're on
This movie is simply impressive, the pig costume, although it looks a little strange, is very well done and the features of his face, although if they are a little creepy, were ahead of the time of the old and distant 1907. the movie has a very strange vibe but at the same time pretty and comical. weird, very surreal, very abstract but it is art ... it hurts that in the current generation people see this film as something disturbing or cloudy and eerie for the simple fact that the pig costume looks weird and for the strange grimaces that does and do not pay attention to how early this film was at the time and how artistic it is. Postscript: I obviously do not belong to that date the tape was released, in fact I am almost of the current generation but that is my point of view of this work.
100% agree. It’s actually really cute and silly. The costume work is amazing & yes, way ahead of it’s time
Do you really believe it's from 1907? Go and look at reel movies from that era and you will see that this one is in my higher quality. I believe this was shot in the present day on modern equipment.
@@holdingtonfarley4444 yes, it is from 1907. Plenty of films from even prior to this date have been preserved through time ( A Trip to the Moon?). You are correct it is of good quality, but that has to do with preservation and those who actually do work to fix it.
@@evanrusselburg8027 Are you sure? Do you have any sources that this really is from 1907? I have seen other preserved films from the era but nothing in this good quality. It's pretty amazing.
But I would like a source on where it comes from and when it was made.
@@holdingtonfarley4444 thats just 3 pretty reliable sources based on cinema that show or discuss it as historically significant, and that it was released in 1907. If you just look up the title of the film, there are plenty of other articles and places to see that it was created in 1907.
Nightmare fuel. Love it!!

@Tonicpenguin793 I'm sure whatever the person said was dumb because this is CZcams but "rAtIo!1!!" isn't an argument, that's Twitter brainrot shit. "Hurrdurr you didn't get enough imaginary internet points so you're wrong" is just fallacious toddler logic, it's like calling someone ugly and pretending it makes their argument invalid or something
@@tonicpenguin7934bro thought he did something 💀
This is amazing. I can't find anything about the pig's construction, but I can say with fair certainty this was not constructed with plastic or polyfoam. I also feel certain there are no electrical elements, the facial gimmicks are strictly mechanical. This is fabricated from cloth, metal, wood and glass. What was its weight? Each gimmick is operated by the performer with levers inside the costume. Visibility must have been near zero. Those are the merely technical qualities which make it amazing. The artistic quality is even more amazing. It blows me away in 2022, it must have freaked people the F out in 1907. Thanks for sharing.
Pretty sure this is fake. It doesn't look like anything else from that time era. It looks like it was shot on modern cameras and had filters on it to make it look like it's old.
I can't believe people aren't seeing through this. Is it just me?
The actor uses his left arm to move the costume's nose, eyes and tongue. Notice that when he moves them, his arm is motionless. Very good costume.
Like Big Bird costume. 🙂
You must have been watching Sherlock Holmes again
Miss Piggy's family has always been in show business I see...
It must be her grandfather
I love the detail of his hat doing a flip when he enters the Scene. I bet there was someone that did it manually behind him. Clever. Well done.
Loads of comments here saying the costume is good “for the time” or “even by modern standards”. This kind of sophisticated costuming and puppetry was around in theater for a long long long time before this film came out ...
That is a very impressive costume for 1907, particularly the articulated head.
That is so funny! Great dancing and acting. I am amazed by the pig costume as it is so expressive.
Glad I'm not the only one who finds this funny
That is terrifying.
Ikr
I found it funny for some reason
@@thehairyguitarist1016 yes idk i think it's just the humour of 1900 that's feel kinda creepy but that's quite funny tho
i don't think is terrifying at all, is a pig dancing... besides the great costume is a very silly short film, the music is not scary at all... is an old and silent film but that doesn't make it terrifying.
@@Moviewer i totally agree
why are people saying this is scary. it's cute and impressively well made.
edit: ok the last scene was kinda creepe lol. but they were just showing how good was the costume.
Some kind of early jumpscare..
Honestly the costume is amazing for a movie over 110 years old, 4:17 is scary asl tho
ngl the girl was lowkey hitting it at the dance part lol 😂
OMG that pig costume was adorable! 😍

Why did they give the pig a FUNCTIONING TONGUE?!? ✨👁👁
I have been looking for this for years and I finally found it...
honsetly? this is truly too cute for words. LOVE it.
At the ending I have a feeling the conversation went like this
Guy: DAMN IT JAQUES YOU LEFT THE CAMERA ON WHILE WE WERE TESTING THE PUPPET!!!!!
Jaques: Hey on the bright side...we just invented Outtakes and Creepypastas
Flicker Alley Clips, thank you for posting this short film prior to digital restoration and colourisation.
I loved this and it was adorable 🐖
I fully agree.
100%❤
Well, I've got something exciting and new to nightmare about tonight.
so what is the message of the movie? I would guess that they fell in love with each other but given his true nature - that of being a "filthy pig" he devours and kills his love in the end - remembering all the humiliating things he did for her in order to get her attention. He made a pig out of himself and threw away his humanity
I doubt it’s that deep
@@maeveh7103 yea they probably just wanted to flex their costume lmao
I think it's just a pig clumsily courting the girl and the girl humiliating it
YEAH! Thank you for full and quality version!
Bricked up rn
Perfect!
I can totally see how kids would find this hilarious and entertaining. They didn’t have much for cartoons & it is funny
Yeah. I don't think animation on screen existed in 1907.
@@davidetienne9404 It actually did, but it worked differently. Serach up 'Pauvre Pierrot', for example
Why do I have this specific creepy-sense against 100+ year old silent films of large mascot costumes? It's just so damn creepy
This is either just part of a full film or another separate film with the same pig and girl.
There was another one where the girl went behind the curtain after removing the pig's coat and came back with a shorter dress or perhaps underwear. I remember she was barefoot and missing her hat. It still has to be on CZcams somewhere but it looks like it's been removed.
The pig got a long mf tongue.. That girl probably had a lot of fun 🤣🤣 jkjk

Mechanisms of the costume= 4:16
1ⁿ: mouth opening sistem made with some type of string, atached to the 1 cm spiked tooths
2ⁿ: Eye movements, we can say it was made with a complex mechanism, im gonna say that was made with string
3ⁿ:ear movement, i think it was made with strings attached by the sides of the giant puppet pig costume
4ⁿ: nose movement, problably made with a nose attached mechanism or with hands

Articulation was incredible
The costume looks as if it were designed from our modern time. Imagine awakening from a deep slumber, only to find THAT leaning over you with its tongue sticking out along with the crazy eye movement. I'd shit myself.
Why does this video make me happy
That was disturbing 😳
That’s terrifying !! 😳
Yes, intentionally it is..

He's fucking terrifying and the lil plot is... strange? But damn if it isnt a lovely piece of theater.
This was cute, I didn’t find anything scary about it, but when I found a comment saying that their interpretation was that the pig ate the woman off camera it scared me now
Top movie !
Oh, shit, the final is scary.
Ahhh, they really knew how to enrich the people with meaningful and artistic endeavors in the old days.
I am glad that this is not lost media.
Idk why someone find this scary. It is funny for me (ok i am person who watched Nightmare on Elm Street and few other shits and said they arent scary, but im sure that this isnt scary and probably wasnt even made to be horror film, maybie more like some horror-comedy)
I get scared of films easily, yet I simply find this adorable.

It's just and upbeat piano song, what's wrong with it?
I saw a GIF of the pig faces and decided to look up where it came from. TBH this wasn't that much creepy at all. The pig costume was nicely done and it has a light comedy around it. If the pig didn't make faces at the end I don't think it would be as criticized as it is. It's actually kinda cute.
