It was released in the same year as the first man on the moon and the release of the Stanley Kubrick film 2001 A Space Odyssey which was about space travel.
My personal opinion, the sixties to the eighties were the greatest generation of popular music.

The time of the space race. Everything David Bowie was good and he evolved continuously for his whole life. I think you might like a Gary Wrights Dreamweaver. It’s in the veins of this sort. Came out after this. Wouldn’t doubt it he took inspiration.

This came out when the world was obsessed with space flight. The space race was a big deal in the 60s. In the early 60s JFK set a goal for the US to land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. The US and soviets were in a competition to see who could land a man on the moon first. The soviets beat the US with the first manned space flight. Then the US won the race to land on the moon in 1969.
Except poor Major Tom never made it back to his wife. Forever he will be floating round his tin can 😢
