  • To know who you are you don’t need the objectifying consciousness (Tamil, suttarivu), but you have to deconstruct it, you have to understand how it works, what it is in nature. Drop the clinging to the contents of this objectifying consciousness, because it is nothing other than pure Awareness plus its objects. If you point your attention to this 'I' after having dropped all the attributes of 'I', such as the personal story and all other personal aspects, that 'I-thought' will sooner or later vanish into pure Awareness. That Awareness is also your subjectivity, but nothing personal, nothing individual, it’s very vast, it’s Presence.
Swami Atmananda is commenting on some verses from Padamalai, a poem written by Sri Muruganar in which he rendered in Tamil verses the direct spoken teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi. The reading is taken from the English translation of selected verses from the Tamil original which has been compiled, edited and published by David Godman and a team of translators (Padamalai: Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi Recorded by Muruganar, Avadhuta Foundation, Boulder, CO, 2004). The verses commented upon in this video recording (v3, v5, v11, v14, v21) are mentioned here in reference to Godman’s publication found in the chapter on Suttarivu, pp 148-150.
