      I agree with every word you said. I was raised in government housing. We were dirt poor. My pop pop told me when I was younger born poor always be poor. I carried that mindset with me. I quit school in the 11th grade. I got my GED three months later. I struggled for several years and realized I didn’t want to live that way anymore. Through your exact words “Hard work and perseverance.” I am a lineman, I make six figures a year. Not handed to me. Blood sweat and tears got me here. We see the work you put into this farm. You wear so many hats and you get it done still. Keep on keeping on Josh! You are doing great things.

      Amen, Josh!! Work ethics in this country have gone down the toilet! I can go into my story, but who besides me would really care? The point is, that I made the choice not to be poor once I became an adult. And, that choice has paid off for the most part!!

      well...I'm not just a farmer buddy....and my land cost less than the average 3 bedroom house in America! That's how ....$2k or less per acre, and you can still get land around here for less than $3500 an acre...but it will need a lot of attention

    Spot on, brother! I was born last in the middle class, married young while in college. We made a combined $15k working through school. Had my 1st kid on the Medicaid. Wife went to medical school on the Army’s dime, and I worked. She finished training, and I went back to school to be a PA, 3 kids by then. I’m now “retired” at 51 building a farm/homestead. I work harder now than I ever did. I’m always behind on something that needed to be done last week, but that’s why it’s a lifelong process. If you have the drive, work ethic, and character to build up your skills and help others along the way, you can do whatever you want. God has been good to me, and I thank Him daily. But you can’t sit back and it just be handed to you. And you can learn something from most anyone if you choose to, even the idiots. If they don’t have anything to offer, why be around them? Keep doing what you’re doing Josh. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years.

    I worked in a prison for 25 years( a job the majority can't or won't do) and I retired at 46. I get gruff all the time from people about being retired so young. I worked 1000+ hours overtime a year in a wretched place and saved. Am I the one that's wrong? Hee hee

      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  Před 25 dny +13

      sounds like you worked hard and saved your money, hopefully got you out of debt and now you're probably doing something else that you enjoy. Now that you've retired, as long as you're taking care of yourself I think that's awesome! I could have stayed in the USAF and retired at 38 years old...plenty of "retired" folks in their 40s nowadays.....you and I both know that 25 years goes by in the blink of an eye!!

    Well said Josh! I consider myself successful. Am I rich..... no, not monetarily. Do I have lots of land..... no. That was not my priority.
    I went to university in Canada, got a degree, never used it. Went into aircraft maintenance, got laid off, went back to school and got my RNs.
    25 years of nursing later, I have a house that is paid off (after 14 years, ) a wife of 37 years, three adult kids, and two grandchildren. To me that is success.
    Times were tough when I got laid off. We had two kids and a mortgage...... but hard work made it happen.
    What I have, is happiness, a home and savings for my retirement. My job allowed for a good pension plan, which I took advantage of. Do I care that my neighbour might have more than me? No. Good on him if he does. I am satisfied with where I am and what I have. I think that is the issue with a lot of people. They want more than they need, and thus feel they have been shorted when they haven't achieved that level.

    Wow, best video you have put out. I don't watch every video you put and don't always agree with you but I never post negatively. I spent most of my growing up years living in a trailer. My parents taught me to work hard. For all of the "Shawn's" out there what Josh is saying is true. From the books he reads, to the idea of surrounding yourself with people that inspire you. As a little kid I wanted to be a farmer and never knew if I could. At age 55 I retired, bought a farm and am playing farmer. We have a boarding stable and a few rentals. So for anyone else out there reading my comment it is completely possible. I wanted a college degree, it only took me 13 years of going to college part time and working multiple jobs. Again GREAT video Josh.

That mentality is a barrier to success...however this isn't just about buying land...or starting a farm...it's about the mentality that somehow someone else has the power to keep ya down, or that luck or handouts is what gets ya somewhere. There's land for sale all over the country....and it's affordable land...but it's not convenient to the local Target .....Do what ya can, with what you have...I agree...and be happy!

    What Josh said is so very true. You do not need to inherit wealth to have land. In my 60 I received my first ever inheritance of almost $3500 which does not make it possible for anyone to make it rich. I have never made as much as teachers make but because I never spent all I made but worked side hustles. I now own more land than most people do and have a comfortable retirement income and a nest egg of more than I ever imagined possible. It is not necessary to have generational wealth but spending less than you make and working hard is essential.

    Hard work is not easy. You defeat yourself by saying you can't. Reasons you can't will always defeat you. Of course it is scary when you do something the first time but what a reward when you complete a task or project. You have to take the step as we did when we were infants. Stop listening to people that say you can't, take the step and try. Sometimes it takes two or three steps to complete moving forward. Get off your butt and do your dream, don't stop when it doesn't go your way and don't listen to folks that say you can't or it will never work. BE SUCCESSFUL and TRY! I worked and never considered myself a victim, allowed myself to be a victim or victimized another person. I didn’t graduate high school, technical college (aviation) or medical school. But I did work hard and owned a home in California and I sold it for a million dollars. I looked for opportunities to improve my employers business while serving my country in Afghanistan. My greatest accomplishments have been helping others!

    • @stephenreese5921
      @stephenreese5921 Před 24 dny

      I earned California State Paramedic certification (I served in Los Angeles County and in the Middle East & Afghanistan) and my aviation Airframe & Powerplant and Pilots Licences on my own. I graduated college twice and finished the first two years of Medical School. After graduating, a nurse called me doctor while I was walking in the hospital to attend a Continuing Medical Education (CME) course, I got puffed up and didn’t like it. So I stopped! I didn’t like feeling like I was better than anyone else.

    • @stephenreese5921
      @stephenreese5921 Před 24 dny +1

      I served my country by volunteering to go to Afghanistan because no one else said “Send Me!). I served my country protecting those who couldn’t protect themselves for over 30 years. I don’t want or am looking for any acknowledgment! I earned my wealth by helping others and buying the worst house on the block. I poured any money and sweat into it and my job which both have rewarded me handsomely. As Josh said, be smart and work harder! Love God and admire what he gave us and treat others as you would hope they treat you. I have a hard time turning the other cheek but, I’ll give them the opportunity to do the right thing. If they don’t, it hasn’t ever been beneficial for them! Be kind to one another!

    I get so tired of people who sit around and complain about other people’s success . Hard work and dedication is 80% of success.
    I’m with you. I too have had people say “you are just lucky”. There was no luck involved….. I worked harder and longer than anyone around me and I cared more about the quality of what I did, and it was recognized by others. Sweat and work ethic makes 80% of success.

I worked in a creamery for 31 years, saved, bought my own little ranch and built a small business raising angus beef cattle. I'm retired from the creamery and just work on my ranch. To get here, there were many 20 hour days. I never called in sick at work and I did everything myself at home. Mostly by hand. I fenced 20 acres digging post holes by hand. And on the 140 acres we lease, fencing is done by hand. Irrigation is all flood irrigated with a lot of hand work.

    Good rant Josh,,,,,, I too have been around wealthy successful people and they work their butts off and to get up there to the point where they use their resources and their knowledge gained over that time of hard work to make something of themselves. You are absolutely right that you should surround yourself with those kind of people. Bless you sometimes people need to hear a wake up call. I remember watching a thing on the History Channel I think about the founders in business and the craft brothers took 13 or 15 years to actually figure out how you pasteurize cheese . Then you might say they got lucky in World War II came along and they put their cheese in the rucksacks of all of the army and people accepted it then but before that there was a lot of bad press about it ... then they went ahead and it was accepted and they worked their butts off to build their company .. I think you are so right and this was so good to hear.. take care of my friend I am so happy for your success and I know you didn't get it overnight and it wasn't given to you right on.

    Good stuff Josh.. We immigrated to this great country from Italy when I was 5 years old.. We had nothing!!!! My mom and dad worked their butts off and taught us the importance of working hard.. My Dad always said "buy land and KEEP IT! This was imbedded in my mind!! I graduated from college, worked hard and started buying land.. I am 58 years old and retired from corporate America almost two years ago and now own and operate a cow calf ranch that my wife and I built together!!!
