Acutally, a Peacock is a male. The gender neutral, or bird type is Peafowl, while a female is known as a peahen
Peacocks also show off their tail when they feel threatened, the patterns on the feathers are suppose to look like eyes and they open their tail to make themselves look larger to scare off predators

In India, we see these peacocks literally dancing on the streets in certain parts of the country..they usually do it as part of mating season or during start of monsoon season
I see these almost everyday from my home here in India. This is India's national bird too.

Actually, that's a common misconception. The peacock's giant feathers just make them more noticeable to predators. Their real purpose is to attract females.

They will do this to
Express happiness.
Impress females- better chance of successful mating
Assert dominance- larger span of feathers against other males
Intimidation- since they can't fly very well they use it to scare any possible creature they find dangerous. This is why when humans surrounded the bird it tried the natural 'big size'= scary move.
