  • Here is a young Sonja Morgenstern landing a very early and very clean triple salchow at the 1971 Europeans in Zurich. By the end of the 1970's all the top women were attempting two different triple jumps but at this stage triple jumps for ladies were very rare. Is this the first clean triple jump landed by a lady in a major ISU competition?

What amazing quality for a 1971 recording. Thanks so much for posting. This 3S is amazing and her speed, confidence and flow over the ice. Jutta Muller was formidable

I remember watching her skate (possibly the Olympics?) where she glided on to the ice all across the ice on one leg, like a bird/swan, it was enchanting. It was simply beautiful to watch. She is the reason I got interested in following ice skating in the first place. So glad I found here again. Thank you for uploading. Blessings to Sonja wherever she is now.

It has to be said, Frau Mueller loved her Broadway show tunes.

I really enjoyed some of those recycled costumes and programs skated by Frau Mueller’s students! All of her female skaters went through the show tunes/American movie soundtracks phase-and maybe Katarina Witt was the only one that diverted from that route a couple of times (1983 FS and 1988 FS), now I think of it. Poetzsch, Grossman, Lang, Genzel, etc. all stayed in the show tunes world while they trained w/ Frau Mueller.

Wow thank you so much. Is the first full video of Sonja! This 3S was so high and fully rotated! First clean was 3Loop by Gaby Seyfert in 1968, it's seems so much. I don't remember exactly the title of source, but one Soviet book gave statistic of performed jumps, analysed by videotapes of 1966-1983 Worlds, tell about 0 triples in 1966-70, and 1 triples in 1971, it seems another time by Sonja.

Great video. You can tell right from the start that she was one of Jutta Muller's skaters - the use of show music (what was it with Jutta and Broadway shows????) and the distinctive forward entry into the triple salchow which all her female skaters had, but which oddly enough Jan Hoffmann didn't have.

Interesting observation about the Sal! It is so true about the 3S entrance, and I am trying to recall when Hoffmann switched his 3S entry from the typical Mueller style to be more conventional. He was definitely performing his 2S and 3S from the straight entrance earlier in his career, but I am thinking it was around 1977 when he switched-for what reason, I don’t know…

@@nondescriptnyc There used to be a vid of his free skate at 1976 Worlds on YT but it seems to have gone now. It's also strange that there's no footage of Hoffmann on YT in what was probably his best year - 1974 - when he won both Europeans and Worlds. I'm wondering if he changed his salchow entry after his year off due to injury in 1975? Just a thought.

I thought Petra Burka officially has the credit for first triple jump in the ISU record book. In whatever year she won Worlds (1965?). It wouldn't seem that Morgenstern would be able to do a triple based on they were her doubles looked, but there it is, no doubt about it. Was that considered a flashy dress for the era. Seems like the norm in 1971 was still the basic one colored pastel dress, but this one has sleeves, and sequins, and... stripes. I swear someone like Simone Lang wore this dress later (the East German ladies were never too proud to wear a hand-me-down dress).

    • @timothyhh
      @timothyhh Před 7 lety +4

floskate You're right, Burka didn't land a triple in 1965 - I just rewatched her skate. But it's strange because I've seen several sources that credit her with the first ladies triple at the 65 Worlds. Hmm...
And about Morgenstern's jumps what I was trying to say was this was the first I saw her skate and when she did that opening sequence of doubles I thought her air position was way too loose and she doesn't necessarily get a lot of height in her doubles so I was surprised that she was able to do such a fine triple Salchow

Timothy Horning I think your criticism regarding the initial dubble combination is not justified. Quality of the - rather seldom by the way - combo is more than average. Spread-DFlip-DToe-DLo. And between DFlip and DToe was necesserily half Oppacher inside step to combine - a variation you don't see anymore, cause it doesn't count (it doesn't even count between triples). The height is ok as well for a combo, dense and fast rotated. And the DLoop 3:01 is very high and excellent, directly next to a serpentine.
Perhaps we save further compliments for Frau Muller's refreshing outlook!

Petra Burka was doing triple salchows at the 1963 North American Championships..but were cheated both in practice and competition..her other jumps were wonderful..
I saw Morgenstern at the Worlds the same year as this competition, and she skated equally well, there ...with a great triple sal.
Tina Noyes was doing powerful, fast triple toe loops in 1969..missed it at Nationals in Seattle, but I believe she nailed it at North Americans in Oakland a couple of weeks later.

I read somewhere that Petra Burka did the first clean triple salchow in the 60s, but I'm not sure which competition it was in and I wouldn't be surprised if it was underrotated. Denise Bielmann was credited with doing the first triple lutz at the 1978 Europeans, but it was underrotated and on two feet, so they weren't so picky in those days!

Good eye! I watched and rewatched the slow-motion replay of Denise's triple lutz from the 1978 Europeans. All these years, I always thought she landed it on one foot (although clumsily). Now after seeing the replay, although It did not appear underrotated to me, it was definitely two-footed.
