The Chittorgarh Fort also popularly known as Water Fort and is home to 22 water bodies, palaces, towers and temples spread over 700 acres. The fort was captured numerous times; the first one to lay his hands on the fort was Bappa Rawal of the Guhila dynasty, who defeated the Moris to capture the majestic fort.
The siege of Chittorgarh (23 October 1567 - 23 February 1568) was the military expedition of the Mughal Empire under Akbar against the Mewar kingdom that commenced in 1567 during which the Mughals successfully captured the fort of Chittorgarh after a hard-pressed siege which lasted for several months.
Chittorgarh fort witnessed Johar Brata thrice in the history, when the brave women of Chittorgarh sacrificed their lives in the burning pyres to keep their honor from the attackers. The Johar Kund is now completely filled-up and maintained as a barricaded ground with green grass.
